NAVSEA Garners Awards

Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) emerged as a major force in environmental stewardship judging by its impressive showing during a recent series of environmental awards. NAVSEA and its various activities were very well represented on April 30 and May 1 at a series of environmental awards presentation ceremonies on behalf of the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO), the Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) and the Department of Defense (OSD). One of NAVSEA's acquisition programs, the Lewis and Clark T-AKE ship program, captured a "grand slam" of sorts winning awards at all levels, two from the CNO, two from SECNAV and one from OSD. The Norfolk Naval Shipyard also won a SECNAV award.

NAVSEA was the biggest winner in the CNO awards, capturing 15 of the 54 awards. NAVSEA's shipyards led the way with six awards, with three for the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility, two for Norfolk Naval Shipyard and one for the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. NAVSEA's research facilities were represented with awards for the Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane and the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Newport. In addition, many NAVSEA personnel from the warfare centers were team members for awards in other categories.

The following NAVSEA activities and organizations were selected as CNO Environmental Award Winners. Stephen Markle, Lewis And Clark (T-AKE), Jim Hunsicker, Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane and Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and IMF Pollution Prevention, (industrial installation) -Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and IMF Pollution Prevention, (individual or team) - PMS 333 Ship Disposal Project and the NAVSEA Pollution Prevention Working Group Environmental Excellence in Weapon Systems Acquisition/Team - Lewis And Clark (T-AKE) Class Project Team and the USS Winston S Churchill (DDG-81) Shock Trial Environmental Team Environmental Restoration, (installation) - Norfolk Naval Shipyard Environmental Restoration, (individual or team) - Environmental Restoration Team, Norfolk Naval Shipyard and Gregory Leicht, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard The following NAVSEA activities won SECNAV Awards.
