Shipping Cyber Risk Management Solution Launched

Maritime Activity Reports, Inc.

April 24, 2018

A new integrated risk management solution launched for the global shipping community is said to be the first of its type, according to OSERV.

OSERV, OSM Maritime Group’s specialized concept for supply chain management and value-added services, developed the solution together with cyber security specialist Pragma.

Combining five crucial elements of cyber protection – technical, operational, IT backup, legal and media crisis management, the new SEAWALL Maritime Cyber Security solution aims to address the peril of cyber-attacks in today’s climate of the escalating incidents in the maritime industry.

A 2017 ransomware attack involving Maersk, the world’s largest container shipping line, incurred an estimated loss of $300 million – revealing the extent of the challenge for the industry in dealing with a digital crisis.

OSERV’s Managing Director, Peter Schellenberger said, “Cases of sophisticated cyber-attacks are increasing and it is crucial for shipowners and managers to understand what to do in an event of a cyber-attack and in view of existing risks, how to protect vessels, crew and companies, on top of anticipating the costs arising from it.”

With SEAWALL, shipowners and managers are given the flexibility to determine the degree of coverage depending on the extent of digital risks to which the company is exposed, OSERV said. The package is offered in an online shopping “add to your cart” format.

Schellenberger added, “This being the first cyber security solution for the maritime industry, we wanted companies to have full control over the degree of services offered as well as the budget they are comfortable to spend – and the modular shopping cart approach allows this; it means companies can pick and choose without any restriction.”

The package includes:

-SEAWALL Scan – testing ship systems remotely for security weaknesses

-SEAWALL Test – testing ship systems through pen testing (physical/remote) and systems audit

-SEAWALL Fix – fixing and patching as a clean-up and preparation for effective monitoring

-SEAWALL Protect – continuous verification of communication and irregularities via cloud and immediate human intervention

-SEAWALL Consult – risk evaluation and advice for creating awareness and suitable solution

-SEAWALL Train – creating a security culture awareness with subject-focused training

To deliver maximum protection, OSERV has partnered with industry experts on risk and cyber threat:

   -Pragma – cyber security specialist

-DNV GL – classification society and training provider for crew and onshore personnel

-HFW – maritime and international trade law firm with shipping as one of its core disciplines

-Navigate Response – international crisis communication consultants to the shipping industry

Geoff Leeming, Partner at Pragma, said, “The digital landscape is rapidly evolving in the maritime sector, a business which has traditionally been cautious in adopting technological change, and so are cyber threats. This solution not only helps companies to cope with the complexity of a cyber-attack but also bolsters the continuity of their business.”
