World's First Autonomous Shipping Company Formed

The road toward autonomy has taken a major step with the announcement that Wilhelmsen and Kongsberg are collectively taking the next step in autonomous shipping by offering a complete value chain for autonomous ships, from design and development, to control systems, logistics services and vessel operations. The new venture is dubbed "Massterly". What is Massterly? The Massterly plan is to have land-based control centers monitor and operate autonomous ships globally, tapping Kongsberg's tech solutions and Wilhelmsen's logistics and ship management operations.

CJ Logistics to Merge with Affiliate

CJ Logistics Corp. (CJL), South Korea’s largest parcel delivery service company under food and entertainment conglomerate CJ Group, will merge with the group’s construction arm, Yonhap said. The merger ratio will be one CJL share for every 0.54 CJ Engineering & Construction (CJEC) share, the logistics company said in a regulatory filing. CJL said in a regulatory filing on Tuesday that it will grant total 529,398 shares worth 80.3 billion won ($73.9 million) to CJ Corp. that owns a 99.9 percent stake in CJ E&C in exchange for a merger with the construction affiliate. Moroccan Navy Enlists Damen for Rapid Response

The Royal Moroccan Navy, in response to the severe drought that is currently affecting the country, recently awarded Damen Shipyards Group a contract to supply a Stan Pontoon 3011 Water Barge. Due to the urgent need for water in the region, Damen Shipyards Gorinchem, the Netherlands, is putting all its efforts into a fast delivery. Combining a Stan Pontoon 3011 with water making technology is a first for Damen. Bringing both technologies together in one unit is a unique and innovative solution to the current water shortage in Morocco.

Harvey Gulf Makes Software Investment

Harvey Gulf International Marine recently deployed Advanced Logistics’ marine management system SAMM and preventative maintenance module Preventer on its fleet of marine transportation vessels. The software allows a vessel to generate operational reports onboard and transmit the data to shore in real time. The technology includes electronic logs, safety and crew management, commodity tracking, fuel and lube management, GPS mapping, preventative maintenance and more, coupled with an interactive web based interface for easy access to data.

MacGregor Receives Huge Order from Hyundai Heavy

MacGregor, part of Cargotec, has received an order worth $77 million (USD) for optimized cargo handling systems for five A-14-series and five A-18-series container vessels from Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd. in South Korea. The 14,000 TEU and 18,000 TEU ships are built for the United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) and they are scheduled for delivery between 2014 and 2015. Siemens Charter Newbuild Offshore Wind Service Vessels

Siemens Energy has signed a chartering agreement with ship owner Esvagt A/S for two new offshore wind service vessels commissioned specifically for Siemens' service operations at the Butendiek and Baltic II offshore wind power plants, Germany, both of which are scheduled to come online in 2015. Rather than the floating hotels that use smaller vessels or helicopters to access the turbines, the new vessels will provide direct access using an advanced hydraulic gangway system that will work to stabilize and provide safe access to the turbines at varying wave conditions.
