The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Joseph Gerczak (WPC 1126), Hawaii's second Sentinel-class cutter, was commissioned into service at Coast Guard Base Honolulu, Friday. Vice Adm. Fred M. US Coast Guard Cutter Rush Decommissioned

The U.S. Coast Guard held a decommissioning ceremony at Base Honolulu Tuesday for Coast Guard Cutter Rush, which will be sold to the Bangladesh Navy and replaced by Coast Guard Cutter Sherman. The ceremony honored 45 years of Rush’s service to the Coast Guard. Vice Adm. Charles W. Ray, Coast Guard Pacific Area commander, presided over the event. Emergency Beacon, Preparedness Save Mariner Off Diamond Head

The Coast Guard rescued a man in a life raft after his sailboat sank approximately seven miles south of Diamond Head, Tuesday. Watchstanders at the Coast Guard Sector Honolulu command center overheard a brief mayday call over VHF channel 16 at 7:43 p.m., with no additional information. Sector Honolulu received a call from a woman at 9:05 p.m., stating her friend had gone out sailing Tuesday evening in his 41-foot sailing vessel, Esperanza, and had not returned. USCG Cutter Waesche Home from RIMPAC Exercises

The Coast Guard Cutter Waesche has returned to port at Coast Guard Base Honolulu, after spending three weeks at sea participating in Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2014 exercises, informs the US Coast Guard. During the exercises Waesche demonstrated the Coast Guard’s unique capabilities and partnership with Department of Defense entities and international partners along the Pacific Rim by serving as the Combined Task Force 175 commander. While in this role, Waesche led vessels from China, Brunei, Mexico, France, Brunei, and the U.S., through numerous multinational exercises including ship handling, boarding exercises, replenishment at sea, and a live-fire gunnery exercise.

Coast Guard groundbreaking ceremony recogizes new support facility

Representatives from the 14th Coast Guard District, Coast Guard Base Honolulu and Mortenson Federal Contracting Group participated in a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a new building at Coast Guard Base Honolulu to support the 2017 arrival of the Coast Guard's new Fast Response Cutters, Wednesday. Remarks were presented by Capt. Patrick McElligatt, Coast Guard Base Honolulu commanding officer, Shawn Hamamoto, representing Mayor Caldwell’s office, and Kahu Bill Kaina. The site was then blessed by a traditional Hawaiian blessing ceremony. The building will provide maintenance and logistics support for the cutters, which are scheduled to replace the aging fleet of 110-foot patrol boats currently serving the Pacific region.
