The Caribbean Maritime Institute (CMI) will now gain university status, following the passage of legislation in both Houses of Parliament to effect this. Not a single senator opposed the bill to make way for the Caribbean Maritime Institute Act, to now be known as the Caribbean Maritime University Act. Government Senator Kavan Gayle has suggested that lending institutions offer preferential terms and interest rates to students who are pursuing courses at CMI. Opposition Senator Angela Brown Burke advised that CMI also stressed the importance of financing, and that it should not become a barrier to access given the critical role of the CMI in the country’s development.

Jamaica launched its bid to be elected to Category ‘C’ of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council last Thursday (2 February) - in a move to position Jamaica as a ‘viable maritime hub’. Rear Admiral Peter Brady, Director General of the Maritime Authority of Jamaica, was deeply honoured to receive the prestigious IMO Themed Award for World Maritime Day 2015 "Maritime education and training", sponsored by the China Classification Society, at last night’s 27th Seatrade Awards Ceremony. The Admiral’s award was in recognition of his dedicated work in the sphere of maritime training. Rear Admiral Brady chaired the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) STW Sub Committee for almost 10 years and was Chairman of the Committee of the Whole at the Diplomatic Conference in Manila which amended the STCW Convention and STCW Code.

Women have a significant role to play in the development of the maritime sector in the Caribbean, region but in order to survive and thrive they need access to professional training and education systems backed by internationally recognized and enforced employment standards. This was the message two leading Caribbean shipping industry executives delivered to the “Maritime Women: Global Leadership 2nd International Conference” held by the World Maritime University (WMU) in Malmo, Sweden this week, March 31-April 1.

Jamaica is backing a pledge by the Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to half the number of lives lost at sea by 2015. Mr. Koji Sekimizu has made reducing maritime casualties a key aim of his term of office. IMO figures put the number of lives lost at sea in 2012 at approximately 1,000, including 500 in international shipping. The Caribbean Maritime Institute has ordered multiple VSTEP simulators for its new high tech simulation center at the campus in Kingston, Jamaica. VSTEP will deliver all simulator solutions for the facility, including a NAUTIS Full Mission Bridge Simulator and a Class C Engine Room Simulator. CMI also ordered full classroom setups for both NAUTIS Desktop Trainers and NAUTIS Engine Room Desktop Trainers. IMO Secretary General, Koji Sekimizu, heads a team to inform a high-level ministerial symposium of critical maritime developments. The four-day visit, hosted by the Maritime Authority of Jamaica (MAJ), will culminate in a High Level Symposium (HLS) of the Ministers of Transport in the Caribbean, drawing delegates from a variety of the region’s States and overseas territories, as well as Jamaica. The HLS is intended to inform the responsible Ministers in the region on critical developments that will affect their countries’ reputations as responsible maritime states.

The installation by Transas of a multi-million dollar full mission simulator upgrade project is well on its way at the Caribbean Maritime Institute’s (CMI) Training Centre in Kingston, Jamaica, and is expected to be fully operational before the start of the September school year. Financed mainly by the European Development Fund (EDF) and the Caribbean Development Band (CDB), the simulator project is implemented by Transas and comprises its Navi-Trainer Professional 4000 navigational bridge with seven channels of visual display and the potential to expand that number to nine channels; Engine Room Simulator, ERS 3000; Liquid Cargo Handling Simulator (LCHS), and GMDSS simulator, TGS 4100.

Caribbean Maritime Institute (CMI) www.cmi.edu.jm, (located on the Polisadoes peninsula) has selected Transas to supply new marine simulation systems for their training center. As a result of this simulator upgrade project endorsed for financing by the European Community, the CMI will receive the most technically advanced training facility in the Caribbean region. This will be the first full mission simulator complex installed by Transas in this area. According to the contract, Transas will deliver a Navi-Trainer Professional 4000 navigational bridge simulator with 7 visualization channels with the potential to expand that number to 9 channels; ERS 3000 Engine Room simulator; LCH simulator and TGS 4100 GMDSS simulator.
