Trelleborg’s marine systems operation has supplied the Association of Maryland Pilots with SafePilot Portable Pilot Units (PPUs) and a Port System server solution to facilitate consistent, real-time information sharing between almost 70 pilots. The SafePilot system is part of Trelleborg’s Smarter Product Portfolio, which its marine systems operation is evolving to support the ‘Port of the Future’. The Association of Maryland Pilots serves the Chesapeake Bay, the longest pilotage route on the East Coast of the United States, with its nearly 200 miles of waters. The scale of the waters put particular demands on the operational battery time the piloting equipment requires.

BigOceanData has been awarded a contract to provide the Government of the Falkland Islands with its vessel monitoring system (VMS) capability for another five years. For the first time the system will include AIS data, which will be integrated with existing Inmarsat tracking data from the fishing vessels. BigOceanData has been supplying the Falkland Islands government with its vessel monitoring system (VMS) for over 10 years. The system is based on an in-house client/server enterprise IT system and Inmarsat cooperative tracking.

Collisions at sea have always been a major risk for seafarers and while the exact numbers of incidents that take place across the globe each year are hard to quantify, the number is significant. BMT ARGOSS, a subsidiary of BMT Group Ltd, has announced that pilot organisations around the world including Peel Ports Medway in the UK and Kiel Canal Pilots in Germany, are investing in the latest version of its marine manoeuvring simulator, PC REMBRANDT V5, to further enhance port navigation risk assessment and familiarisation training capabilities. In order to provide greater accuracy to the simulation experience, BMT ARGOSS has enhanced the tidal current and wind settings to accommodate the unique features of a given port which can affect current flow and wind speed.

In June 2000, Autoship Systems Corporation of Vancouver, Canada launched Autostructure, its new internal structural design program. Autostructure is used to create a 3-D model of a vessel structure and to output the parts of that model in CAD format. The CAD representation can be used to either prepare construction drawings or for input to NC cutting processors. Autostructure utilizes an Autoship-generated hull and/or superstructure and can also include the shell plate information created in Autoplate. Every aspect of Autostructure was designed to allow parts to be created quickly and with minimal input. While there is a general workflow, no set ways or sequences are forced upon the user, thus enabling maximum productivity with minimum effort.
