CMA CGM Celebrates 40 Years of Entrepreneurialship

40 years ago, on September 13th, 1978, Jacques R. Saadé launched the first maritime line between Marseilles and Beirut, with only one ship and 4 employees. The day marked the beginning of an extraordinary humane and entrepreneurial adventure, said a press release.According to the statement, 40 years later, CMA CGM has become a recognized world leader, with 34,000 employees and a presence in more than 160 countries. History: It is amid the Lebanese war that Jacques R. Saadé decided to settle in Marseilles to protect his family. As a visionary man, he anticipated the evolutions of international trade and was convinced of the crucial role containerization was about to play.

Lebanese NGO “KAYANY” Bags CMA CGM Corporate Foundation 2016 Prize

On Thursday, December 22, the President of CMA CGM Corporate Foundation, Mrs. Naïla Saadé, handed over the 2016 Prize of the Corporate Foundation to Mrs. Nora Joumblatt, founder and president of the NGO “KAYANY” at CMA CGM head office in Beirut. Founded in 2013, the Lebanese NGO “KAYANY”, which means “my existence”, aims at providing schooling and psychosocial support to the most vulnerable Syrian children refugees in Lebanon. Since its inception, “Kayany” has been a key player in administering free and accessible schooling to over 3,000 boys and girls, aged between 6 and 14. These children had no access to education and were out of school for more than three years.

CMA CGM Bags Award for CSR Performance by EcoVadis

For the second consecutive year, CMA CGM has won the “Gold Recognition Level” by EcoVadis a specialist agency in CSR evaluation. This award acknowledges CMA CGM’s CSR ambition and performance especially regarding: the improvement of its Carbon performance by 50% in 2015, its commitment to vulnerable children through CMA CGM Corporate Foundation and its Safety policy. Environment: to minimize the impact of the Group’s activities with innovation as a major driver: The Group sets itself extremely ambitious targets in the area of environmental sustainability and reached some in 2015: for example, in 10 years, CMA CGM has improved its Carbon performance by 50%, and has already committed itself to improve its Carbone performance by 30% by 2025.

Giant Container Ship Christened

The 'CMA CGM MARCO POLO' (16 000 TEU) christened at the Zeebrugge Container Terminal in Belgium during maiden European voyage. The ceremony was performed by 'Godmother', Mrs. Naila Saadé, President of the CMA CGM Corporate Foundation and wife of Mr. Jacques R. Saadé, CMA CGM Group Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. The new 16 000 TEU vessel, owned by CMA CGM, sails under the UK flag. Built by DSME (Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering) in South Korea, the ship is 396 meters long, 54 meters wide, with a draft of 16 meters.

CMA CGM Corporate Foundation to Help Somalia

The CMA CGM Corporate Foundation has joined forces with the World Food Programme (WFP), the United Nations agency at the forefront in the fight against hunger, to transport aid to the Horn of Africa, which is suffering its worst drought and famine for decades. As part of the programme set up by the WFP to distribute special highly nutritional products in Somalia, the CMA CGM Group has made available 356 twenty-foot containers – 40 free of charge and 316 at a special rate – which adds up to a total of 10,000 tonnes of food supplies. The first shipment will leave Zeebrugge on 29 August and should arrive in Mombasa around 29 September from where it will be ferried by the World Food Programme to Somalia.
