The Alfa Laval Moatti 290 filter for hydraulic control oil (HCO) has been approved by MAN Diesel & Turbo on its modern two-stroke engines following validation tests aboard three Stena Bulk IMOIIMAX vessels. The Alfa Laval Moatti 290 filter is a high-performance solution suited to the new generation of MAN Diesel &Turbo two-stroke engines, in which hydraulic control systems have replaced traditional camshafts. The valves of these systems are actuated by a small flow of lube oil, which must be very finely filtered without creating additional pressure drop.

Marcus Schaerer, Shell Marine Global Marketing Manager (Photo: Shell)

Shell Marine has unveiled its next generation Shell Argina and Shell Gadinia trunk piston oils for the medium-speed engine market. As owners face pressures to shift toward cleaner fuels that address emissions regulations, Shell said demand for distillates and low-sulphur heavy fuel oil will only increase as shipping approaches a global fuel sulphur content cap of 0.5 percent, imposed by IMO from 2020. Already, dual-fuel engines are taking an increasing share of the medium speed market.

Filipino Fishermen Remove Chinese Buoys near Disputed Shoal

Filipino fishermen found several buoys with Chinese markings near the disputed Scarborough Shoal and towed the devices back to shore northwest of the capital, Manila, Philippines officials said on Sunday. China seized control of the rocky outcrop in the South China Sea in 2012 after a three-month stand-off with Philippine coast guard ships, preventing Filipino fishermen from getting near their traditional fishing grounds. The shoal is about 125 nautical miles (230 km) west of the Philippines. "Yes, there are buoys there," said Desiree Edora, mayor of Masinloc town, which has jurisdiction over Scarborough Shoal. "I already sent the chief of police to investigate the buoys," she told Reuters.

Combatting Maritime Cyber Security Threats

Vulnerable to Hacking What should concern many in the maritime industry is that the main ship navigation systems including GPS, AIS and ECDIS receive data via radio frequency transmission at sea and as such are extremely vulnerable to hacking.

The U.S. Executive Branch has declared that the cyber threat is one of the most serious economic and national security challenges we face as a nation, and that America’s economic prosperity in the 21st century will depend on effective cyber security. Before the maritime industry sounds the danger signal, it needs to monitor other industries and branches of the government and take proactive preventative measures. There is no better place to prepare future and current mariners for these challenges than in maritime simulators.

First Voith Water Tractor with Fully ECS

First Voith Water Tractor with fully electronic control system

Shipowner Fukushima Kisen based in Iwaki on the east coast of Japan has commissioned the first Voith Water Tractor (VWT) with a fully electronic control system (ECS). On the ECS version, the hydraulic unit is no longer separate but is installed on the rotor casing foundation of the Voith Schneider Propeller (VSP). Not only does this save space, but it also simplifies maintenance and increases reliability. The new VWT Shinano has been designed for harbor assistance and escort duties.

USCG Lessons Learned: Proper Maintenance

A partial propulsion failure occurring on a commercial vessel can result in significant injury and damage when the movement of the vessel is unchecked and an allision or collision occurs. In some circumstances a significant amount of hull damage can occur at very slow speeds, while in others, multiple fatalities may occur. Owners and operators, and those responsible for vessel maintenance, specifically steerage and propulsion systems may find the following information useful and recognize the need to examine their own vessel's equipment and maintenance systems. Although the following speaks to a specific propulsion system, the noted lessons are useful for any type. The vessel was equipped with cycloidal drive units fore and aft.

Wärtsilä: Smokeless by Common Rail

There are two main ingredients to common rail fuel injection, one being the freedom to choose injection pressure and timing totally independently of the engine load. The other is computerized control, which makes it possible to consider several engine parameters and optimize the injection and combustion in each load situation. The Wärtsilä Common Rail development was kicked off for both medium-speed engines and low-speed engines at a seminar in June 1997. This year both medium-speed engines and low-speed engines will enter commercial service. The Wärtsilä Common Rail concept for four-stroke engines comprises: Camshaft driven high-pressure pumps…

Planning, Not Technology, Is Key To Spill Avoidance

Good planning, and not super high technology is the key to fighting tanker oil spills, Ian White, managing director of London-based International Tanker Owners Pollution Federation Ltd. said last week. "There are technological limitations as to what you can do (to control oil spills). He said in a speech most spills from tankers occurred during routine operations such as loading, discharging and bunkering. But bigger spills involving more than 700 tons have resulted from collisions and groundings, he said. "You can use booms and skimmers to concentrate the oil, pick it up and remove it, but it tends to be quite inefficient, especially if the weather is not good," White said.
