The propulsion system is a critical part of all patrol craft. There are different types of propulsion systems available for use on these craft, and selecting the “best” one for the application at hand is not to be taken lightly. You will note that I used “best” in quotes, which I’ve done to hint at the subjective nature of the decision. Propellers, waterjets, sterndrives, outboards – they are all commercial off the shelf technologies which are mature and used in different patrol craft applications.

Yanmar has already introduced several new products for the marine market in 2018, including a new common rail inboard marine diesel engine touted as the world's smallest, higher horsepower offerings in its mid range series, and expanded joystick controls. Yanmar Marine International has launched the latest addition to its family of new generation common rail (CR) diesel engines, the compact Yanmar 3JH40 inboard engine, at boot Düsseldorf. The three-cylinder 3JH40 has been developed as the marine industry’s smallest CR inboard diesel engine, Yanmar said.

Kohler Power Systems, manufacturer of diesel and gasoline marine generators for pleasure and commercial craft applications, announced the availability of its new single- and three-phase Tier 3 marine diesel generators. Kohler Marine, manufacturer of diesel and gasoline marine generators for a wide range of pleasure and commercial craft applications, announced its participation in the Hermione-Lafayette Voyage 2015. This historic voyage includes an Atlantic crossing as well as a tour of the eastern United States by an authentic reproduction of the Hermione, the 18th century frigate that carried the Marquis de Lafayette to America in 1780 with news that France was sending more than 5,000 troops to help fight the British. The modern-day Hermione – at 185 ft. tall, 216 ft. long and carrying a crew of 75 – was built to exacting specifications over a 17-year period in Rochefort, France. She departed Port des Barques in April and made landfall at Yorktown, Virginia on June 5, 2015.

Armstrong Marine, Port Angeles, WA,  delivered ‘Arctic Solution’, an impressive landing craft to transport equipment and personnel to and from oil producing regions near Prudhoe Bay, AK. ‘Arctic Solution’ was built for Arctic Marine Solutions in Seward, Alaska, to an innovative landing craft design developed by Pat Eberhard, Engineer and owner of CoastWise Corporation. This new new design is co-owned by Arctic Marine Solutions and CoastWise Engineering. When laden this 38.6 ton (85,000 lb.) vessel has an impressive sprint speed of 30 knots (Lightship 35 knots)!

Caterpillar’s newC30 marine diesel engine is available for worldwide distribution. The electronically controlled C30 is in the same size class as the popular Cat 3412E, but adds 150 mhp (148 bhp) --- an 11 percent increase. The C30’s top rating of 1570 mhp (1550 bhp) at 2300 rpm provides a significant performance boost for 50+ ft (15+ m) yachts. The C30 was designed for high performance; it accelerates rapidly, cruises smoothly and has exceptional reserve power for challenging sea conditions. Caterpillar initially offered the 3056 propulsion engine as the first in a new line of compact, fuel-efficient marine propulsion engines based on an environmentally friendly, in-line 6-cylinder, 4-stroke cycle diesel design.

It could be dubbed "the new classic." The idea of creating a comfortable passenger vessel encompassing old world classic décor — as per the famed ocean liners of the early 20th Century - while instilling modern safety and mechanical requirements, as well as sophisticated amenities. Last fall, Miami, Fla.-based Celebrity Cruises created its own rendering of this trend via its new "Millennium" Class of ships.
