Singapore Shortlists Two Consortia for Ammonia Power and Bunkering Project

Singapore's Energy Market Authority (EMA) and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) have shortlisted two consortia for the next proposal evaluation round of an ammonia power and bunkering project, they said in a joint statement on Thursday.The project aims to develop a low- or zero-carbon ammonia project on Jurong Island in Singapore to generate power and explore ammonia as a potential marine fuel.The two shortlisted consortia were Keppel's Infrastructure Division and Sembcorp-SLNG, who will conduct engineering, safety and emergency response studies for the proposed project.The bu

RWE Delivers its First LNG to Britain

German utility RWE has delivered its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo to Great Britain.The cargo, comprised of approximately 150 000 m3 of LNG, was regasified through a Milford Haven LNG Terminal, located close to RWE’s 2000 MW Pembroke B gas-fired combined cycle gas power plant (CCGT).The cargo has been sourced from the portfolio of RWE Supply & Trading, the subsidiary of RWE which is responsible for gas and LNG trading.The cargo was loaded from Sabine Pass Liquefaction Terminal in the Gulf of Mexico, USA and transported by RWE Supply & Trading to Great Britain on the Gaslog Savannah LNG carrier.Once regasified, the LNG will meet a significant proportion of any gas consumption needs of Pembroke Power Station. On a typical day Pembroke burns 8,000,000 m3 of natural gas.

Building the Most Powerful Otto Cycle Engine in the World

WinGD has released a time-lapse video of the build of a 12X92DF engine, built by CSSC-MES Diesel Co., Ltd. (CMD) in Lingang, Shanghai.This twelve-cylinder version of the 92cm bore X-DF dual fuel engine from WinGD, is set to be the largest and most powerful Otto cycle gas and dual-fuel engine ever built and will bring a new level of environmental sustainability to the containership segment.The engine build has taken approximately 3,125 person days, which totals to 25,000-man hours. The engine weighs over 2,100 tons and has received parts from more than 15 countries.

Mayer Brown Advises on HK FSRU Project

Law firm Mayer Brown advised CLP Power Hong Kong on the Hong Kong offshore LNG terminal project, which involves the use of floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) technology for the first time in Hong Kong. The FSRU will receive, store, and regasify LNG into two separate subsea gas pipelines to supply natural gas to Castle Peak Power Company Limited and Hongkong Electric Co., Ltd., generating power for Hong Kong residents.Mayer Brown advised CLP Power Hong Kong Limited on the FSRU charter and regasification agreements and operation and maintenance services to be provided to the offshore LNG terminal with Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL), one of the world's largest shipping operators.

Keppel Makes First LNG Cargo Import from N. America

Singapore's Keppel Gas, a wholly owned subsidiary of Keppel Infrastructure Holdings, has completed its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo import under Singapore's spot import policy.The policy allows gas customers in the Republic to import up to 10 per cent of their annual long-term contracted LNG intake on a spot cargo basis.The spot cargo of 160,000m3 of LNG originated from an LNG liquefaction project in North America, marking the first time that Keppel Gas has diversified its gas supply portfolio beyond Southeast Asia.The LNG cargo reached Singapore on 10 April 2019 and will be regasified as feedstock for downstream customers and end users, including Keppel Merlimau Cogen, over a continuous period of 30 days.

European Oil Majors Enter U.S. Offshore Wind Markets

Statoil, Shell, DONG Energy turn to U.S. offshore wind; oil firms bring big budgets, offshore tech and risk experience. Some European oil majors have made inroads into the emerging U.S. offshore wind energy market, aiming to leverage their experience of deepwater development and the crowded offshore wind arena at home. Late entrants to the offshore wind game in Europe, which began with a project off Denmark 25 years ago and is now approaching maturity, they are looking across the Atlantic at what they view as a huge and potentially lucrative new market. Norway's Statoil has won a licence to develop a wind farm of the New York coast, is marketing its new floating turbine to California and Hawaii and is retraining some oil and gas staff to work in its wind division.

LNG COGES-powered 20,000 TEU Ship Closer to Reality

A joint industry project (JIP) examining the potential of developing an electric-driven 20,000 TEU ultra large container vessel (ULCV) with an LNG-fuelled combined cycle gas and steam turbine (COGES) electric power plant aims to utilize LNG as a primary fuel for an ultra-low emissions profile, in a design with at least the same carrying capacity and efficiency as existing ULCVs. LNG Investment Swings to North America

The LNG industry is undergoing a dramatic transformation. North American activity (the majority of which is committed spend) is driving a return to growth in global capital expenditure. A wave of new LNG carrier newbuilds will also be required to support a huge increase in traded base-load LNG volumes. Douglas-Westwood’s (DW) new World LNG Market Forecast 2017-2021 indicates global LNG expenditure will total $284 billion (bn) between 2017 and 2021. This represents a 50% growth compared with the preceding five-year period. Report author, Mark Adeosun, commented, “Liquefaction terminals will remain the principal driver of expenditure with spend in the segment totalling $192bn. This will subsequently lead to a 42% increase in liquefaction capacity by the end of the forecast period.

BMT Awarded LNG Engineering For Côte d’Ivoire

BMT Asia Pacific (BMT), a subsidiary of BMT Group Ltd, has been appointed Owners Engineer and lead design consultant by Endeavor Energy, for the development of the LNG storage and regasification facility as part of the Songon Gas-to-Power Project in Côte d’Ivoire. Songon, a greenfield development, will consist of combined cycle gas to power generation with an integrated fuel solution, featuring purpose-built LNG infrastructure and a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU). This appointment builds on the successful relationship established with Endeavor last year in developing Africa’s first ever LNG import terminal via Endeavor and GE’s Ghana 1000 Power Project.

Saldanha Bay Could be S.Africa's First LNG Import Terminal

Gas seen as key to help resolve power crisis; gas could be sourced from Nigeria, Angola, Mozambique. South Africa could build its first 20 billion rand ($1.4 billion) liquefied natural gas (LNG) import facility at the west coast port of Saldanha Bay to feed gas-to-power projects aimed at easing chronic supply shortages, an official said on Tuesday. Importing LNG is among the options Africa's most developed economy is considering to diversify its energy sources away from coal and ease power shortfalls that have curbed growth. Several companies, including Shell, Mitsubishi and Sasol, are expected to bid for 3,126 megawatt (MW) gas-to-power projects in the first quarter of 2016, when exact details will become known.

GE Marine’s LM6000 aeroderivative marine gas turbine PC and PG models have received Lloyd’s Register’s Design Appraisal Document to the Marine Naval Vessel Rules (NVR). According to Ge, the fuel-efficient LM6000 simple-cycle gas turbine delivers over 40% thermal efficiency. 51% Stakes of Keppel Merlimau Cogen Sold for $510 mi

Keppel Infrastructure Holdings Pte Ltd (KI), through its wholly-owned subsidiary, has agreed to sell 51% stake of Keppel Merlimau Cogen Pte Ltd (KMC), which owns Keppel Merlimau Cogen Plant to Keppel Infrastructure Trust (KIT or the Trust) for a cash consideration of $510 million (KMC Transaction). The agreement was signed with Keppel  Infrastructure Fund Management Pte Ltd (KIFM), in its capacity as trustee-manager of KIT. Located on Jurong Island, Singapore, Keppel Merlimau Cogen Plant is a 1,300 MW combined cycle gas turbine power generation facility and is the first asset proposed to be injected into the Trust under the expanded "Right-of-First-Refusal" (ROFR) deed between KI and KIFM.

Wind Energy Generation Beats Gas Turbines

Ernst & Young conducted a study that presents an integrated analysis of the value creation potential of wind energy. The study was commissioned by Acciona and EDP Renováveis and compares two energy technologies, Combined Cycle Gas Turbines (CCGT) and wind, to analyze the impacts of microeconomic factors such as direct costs as well as macroeconomic factors including job creation, Gross Domestic Product contribution, energy security, grid integration costs, CO2 and the impact of wind power on electricity pool prices. Wind energy has a higher impact on tax revenues than other technologies. In addition, wind energy creates a positive effect on the wholesale market by lowering the electricity spot prices which in turn, compensates for the premium tariff received.

Dong to Spend $1.8 Billion A Year for Offshore Wind Farms

Dong Energy A/S plans to invest about $1.8 billion a year on offshore wind projects to offset a “challenging” environment for gas plants, as it ceases to build new coal power facilities, its chief said. That’s about what the world’s largest developer of offshore wind parks spent last year on turbines installed at sea. “We think that is around that level we will be working at in the coming years,” said Anders Eldrup, chief executive officer of the Fredericia, Denmark-based company. Dong announced that Eldrup, who spoke in an interview on March 9, is stepping down as chief executive. Finance director Carsten Krogsgaard Thomsen will be acting CEO until a new chief executive is found, it said, adding that there will be no change in the company’s strategy.

GE Begins Testing for ABS Certification for LM6000 Gas Turbine

GE Transportation's marine gas turbine business has launched a program to obtain American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) certification, to the Steel Vessel and the new Naval Vessel Rules, for its LM6000 aeroderivative gas turbine. GE plans to certify the LM6000 at a power level greater than 36 megawatts based on United States Navy standard day conditions (100oF). "The LM6000 has been operating for more than 10 years in diverse marine environments. In fact, LM6000s have accumulated more than 290,000 hours on floating, production, storage and off-loading vessels, and aboard commercial power barges and offshore platforms," said Karl Matson, general manager of GE Transportation's marine business, Evendale, Ohio.
