MTU to Showcase Engines at Commercial Marine Expo

The Tognum brand MTU will be showcasing the Series 2000 marine engine for new workboat installations at the Commercial Marine Expo, June 22-23, 2011 in booth #201. The Series 2000 is available in both 12V and 16V configurations, with power output that ranges from 805 bhp to 1,070 bhp (600 - 800 kW) at 1,800 RPM. In addition to the Series 2000, MTU will also be displaying the venerable Series 60 engine. With more than 650,000 units in operation around the globe, the MTU Series 60 engines have demonstrated both high reliability and durability. Power output ranges from 350 bhp to 825 bhp (261 kW to 615 kW) at 1,800 to 2,300 RPM. The 6-cylinder inline MTU Series 60 features low fuel consumption, compact design, and ease of maintenance, making it one of the most economical engines in its class.

Repowers on The Ohio

James Marine, Inc., a marine service in Paducah, Ky., located at mile 5 on the Tennessee River; operates a diesel rebuilding service, mid-stream, fuel and grocery supplies and a shipyard repair facility. With their location, they get a good look at the trends on America's inland waterways. The recent trend toward greater environmental awareness and expected changes to the Environmental Protection Act to require greater pollution control on the inland waterways has prompted them to review their repower options. The existing fleet has been largely powered by two-cycle marine diesels, and they were interested in gaining fuel savings. This past December, they put their first repower vessel in service. the 50 x 21 ft. Miss Deanna has a pair of Cummins NTA855 engines each producing 400 hp.

New Four-Cycle Marine Workboat Engine Package

Stewart & Stevenson Services, Inc. recently combined efforts with Detroit Diesel and Hollywood Marine to test a new four-cycle V12-2000 series commercial marine workboat engine package. Advantages of the more compact and durable 2000 series four-cycle engine, include reduced fuel and oil consumption and a noticeably quieter engine due to its triple-wall exhaust system. The new style triple-wall exhaust system also reduces engine room heat. Another advantage of the new series 2000 series engine is that the engine is emission certified, and will meet the future emission requirements of the year 2000 and beyond. Noble Denton Executive Appointments

Noble Denton, the premier provider of life cycle marine and offshore engineering services to the oil & gas, marine and renewables industries, announced two executive appointments within its American operations. The company appointed Michael Lowe as Global Business Team Group Director, Project Management Services, and Vernon Luning as President, Lowe Offshore International, US Project Management Services. Michael Lowe will report to David Rowan, Managing Director, Project Management & Execution, with an initial remit to develop the company’s global field development project management capabilities. Bourbon, Bureau Veritas Partner on Digitalization

Under a new strategic partnership agreement, French offshore services firm Bourbon and testing, inspection and certification services provider Bureau Veritas will develop and deploy new digital technologies, including solutions for automation, real time fleet monitoring and mitigating cyber risks. MARAD Evaluates Natural Gas v. Conventional Fuel Emissions

The Maritime Administration (MARAD) informs it has released a study that evaluates total fuel cycle emissions for natural gas versus conventional marine fuels. This study was conducted as a part of MARAD’s Maritime Environmental & Technology Assistance program, which focuses efforts on emerging marine transportation and environmental issues. Results of the study showed that the use of natural gas as a propulsion fuel can reduce air quality pollutants and reduce major greenhouse gas emissions when compared to conventional fuels.

Electro-Motive Diesel, Inc. has received China Classification Society Certificate of Approval for its 710 GC family of Marine Diesel Engines. This most recent certification is in addition to American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), Bureau Veritas (BV), Lloyds Register (LR). Det Norske Veritas (DNV), and Korean Register (KR). Speaking on behalf of Electro-Motive Diesel, Mr. Brian Grinter commented that, “Being certified by CCS is an important step in reintroducing the EMD two cycle medium speed diesel engines into the worldwide marine and drilling markets.

New YANMAR EPA Tier III Engine

YANMAR America introduced its new EPA Tier III compliant commercial marine diesel engine. Rated at 755 mHP and 1,900 rpm, the new 20.38-liter 6AYAM-ET uses a full mechanical control system. EMD, MaK Asia Expand Marine Offering

Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD), part of Progress Rail Services Corporation, a Caterpillar company, announced MaK Asia will be adding the EMD 710 two-cycle engine to their marine sales portfolio. This expands MaK Asia’s engine offerings while providing EMD customers in Asia with a local support channel. Marintec 2013 will be the first tradeshow featuring the new distribution. Pankaj Khanna Appointed As CEO of Ocean Rig

Pankaj Khanna has been appointed as President and Chief Executive Officer of Ocean Rig UDW, a global provider of offshore deepwater drilling services,  effective January 1, 2018. Khanna is 47 years old with 29 years of varied experience in the maritime & offshore industry. He last served as Chief Executive Officer of Pioneer Marine Inc, a drybulk company that he founded in 2013. Prior to his position at Pioneer Marine Inc Khanna served as Chief Marketing Officer at Ocean Rig UDW Inc. from January 1, 2012 to October 2, 2012. Mr. Khanna served as the Chief Operating Officer of DryShips, Inc.

Friede & Goldman Selects AVEVA Marine

AVEVA said that Friede & Goldman (F&G) has selected AVEVA Marine. F&G will use AVEVA Marine to create intelligent 3D models of mobile offshore drilling and production units with the goal of shortening design cycle time and improving information handover and communication with clients. F&G selected AVEVA Marine after an evaluation of available software solutions for 3D marine design.

SNAME to Hold Technical Meeting

The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) will host its sixth technical meeting for the 2013-2014 season Thursday, February 20, 2014 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of Maran and Alpha Tankers, 354 Syngrou Ave., Kallithea, Athens. During the meeting, Dr.-Ing. Ioannis Vlaskos, Global Market Sector Director- Marine, Director – Large Engines & Gas Engines at Ricardo, Deutschland will speak on the subject of ‘‘Waste Heat Recovery in Marine Propulsion Systems’’. Recovery of waste heat from marine engines is an important option for reducing the environmental footprint of ships.

Renewable Energy Battery Solutions Ready for Ships

A range of marine battery solutions has received approval for use on-board ships or marine related applications such as offshore platforms and renewable energy projects. Now available from Eco Marine Power (EMP), a developer of renewable energy solutions for ships, in cooperation with storage batteries and electrical machinery manufacturer Furukawa Battery Company of Japan, the battery range has been accepted for use on classed vessels by ClassNK (Nippon Kaiji Kyokai) in addition to having been evaluated by EMP.

Imtech Marine Targets Doubling Revenue

Chemgas Shipping Inks Maintenance Deal with Alphatron

Alphatron Marine has signed a premium member contract with Chemgas Shipping covering eight gas carriers.   The Gas Carriers are fitted mainly with bridge equipment which Alphatron Marine has many years of experience of installing and also supporting these and other high tech navigation and communication equipment onboard. The contract also embraces equipment and services that is subjected to mandatory annual certifications and inspections but also life cycle support and a preferred partner service is included.

Meridian Marine Progressive Products announces a North America distribution agreement with Northstar Battery Company for their HD series marine batteries. Using state of the art technology, these batteries take up to 40% less space and 25% less weight than conventional case sizes. They also feature high cycle life and tremendous starting power. Web Site for Detroit Diesel 2-Cycle Engines

MTU has launched a new Web site (www.2-cycle.mtu-online.com) dedicated exclusively to 2-cycle diesel engines and their proper maintenance. While the brand name on the engine may say Detroit Diesel, the support for that 2-Cycle engine is actually provided by MTU and its global network of authorized distributors. This name difference has caused some customer confusion, leaving 2-Cycle owners to wonder about the availability of factory parts and service for these legacy engines. “The 2-Cycle business is alive and well,” says MTU 2-Cycle parts product planning manager Lisa Farrens. “Many customers have been led to believe that Detroit Diesel doesn’t do 2-Cycle anymore.

Imtech Marine Inks VSAT and TVRO Contracts

Imtech Marine has recently signed Global Distribution and Service agreements for satellite communication (VSAT) and satellite TV (TVRO) products with three prominent manufacturers. Via its company Radio Holland, Imtech Marine already had (long) relationships with Intellian, Jotron and Thrane & Thrane, which are now extended for VSAT and TVRO. All Imtech Marine branches (80 around the world)  will supply, install, commission and service the  systems and arrange airtime. The agreements are in line with Imtech Marine’s multicard strategy, focussed on quality solutions. As a full service provider and system integrator Imtech Marine’strategy is focussed on life cycle management partnership and on increasing the value of the ship’s operations.

Slowdown, Brazil Impact Hit Sembcorp

The strain of low oil prices on the offshore and marine sector was in full display as  the world’s second-largest builder of oil rigs Sembcorp Marine Ltd posted its first quarterly loss in at least 12 years. The company took impairment charges and provisions of S$609 million for projects of its client Sete Brasil Participacoes SA and others. It’s the first quarterly loss since the company started reporting data in 2003, according to Sembcorp Marine’s website. Sete Brasil is a private company set up in 2010 to build, own and lease deepwater rigs to state-run oil producer Petrobras.

Pioneer Marine Cancels Drybulk Newbuildings

Pioneer Marine Inc., a shipowner and global drybulk handysize transportation service provider, has terminated the last two newbuilding contracts for Green Dolphin 38,400 dwt Handysize vessels following mutual agreement with Yangzhou Guoyu Shipyard. The instalments paid in relation with these contracts including interest will be paid back by the refund guarantor. In a release, Pankaj Khanna, CEO of Pioneer, said “Following the termination of the last two newbuildings we have eliminated all capital expenditure for the company. Our proactive management of this unprecedented low cycle has seen us cancel 10 of the 12 newbuildings ordered in the original program and demonstrates the complete alignment of management with shareholder’s interests.
