Is the Honeymoon Over In Philadelphia?

Launched nearly two years ago with high expectations of an efficient U.S. Shipbuilding facility, it appears the revitalization of the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard as a viable commercial entity is waning. Aside from the fact that the yard's parent company, Kvaerner, has essentially exited the international shipbuilding scene, the yard has entered the crosshairs of Pennsylvania's Auditor General Robert P. Casey Jr., whose office recently issued a scathing report that alleges the organization's top officials are nearly the only ones to have benefited from the $400+ million project. But while full details of the report were released yesterday…

History Repeats Itself In the “City of Brotherly Love”

The shipbuilding company, which occupies approximately 114 acres on what used to be the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, utilizes a section of the former Naval yard, which was closed down in 1996 by the U.S. Government due to lack of funds. Further revitalizing this historical landmark, was KPSI's decision to utilize the yard's original drydocks that date back to WWII. But the facility is hardly stuck in the 1940s as it boasts a full array of modern shipbuilding technology and systems. Recently, Ron McAlear, hailing from Litton Avondale and a U.S.

Interesting Repair Jobs in GOM

Today's commercial vessel owners are becoming increasingly creative in order to extend the life of existing vessels. Typically, a commercial steel hull can last for more than 50 years. However, rugged use may call for extensive repair of a vessel to keep it sailing. Market changes may demand that a vessel originally design for one mission is converted to a new and hopefully more profitable use. Most repair work done in shipyards is for five-year regulatory inspections to meet Coast Guard requirements. Often shafts and props are repaired during this inspection, as are sea chests and rudders. Anodes may be replaced as well. A high profile…
