Kenya is working to create a National Maritime Security Strategy aiming to bring opportunities for social-economic growth, by safeguarding and promoting the blue economy and by providing a safe and secure operating environment for international maritime transportation.The roadmap to develop the strategy was agreed following an inaugural virtual meeting (21 July) organized by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and attended by 16 participants, representing maritime stakeholders from all relevant ministries and agencies of Kenya.

The number of seafarers in India has seen an unprecedented growth of 42.3% due to various policy level changes brought in by the Government in the last four years, said a Minister in India.According to Mansukh Mandaviya, Minister of State for Shipping, Road Transport & Highways, Chemical & Fertilizer, from 108,446 seafarers in 2013, India now has 154,349 seafarers. India now provides 9.35% of the global seafarers and ranks 3rd in the list of the largest seafarer supplying nations in the world.At present, there are 17 lakhs seafarers globally including the 154,349 Indian seafarers. The Indian Cabinet has approved signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for greater cooperation with regard to marine aids to navigation that includes advice on lighthouses and beacons besides vessel traffic service. SHIPFLOW 6 comes with a new module for computing ship motions in waves and the SHIPFLOW RANS solver is up to 10 times faster than its predecessor. SHIPFLOW MOTIONS is a new flow solver for computing ship motions in waves. It is a time accurate fully nonlinear boundary element method which can be used to compute ship motions and added resistance in regular and irregular waves as well as wave resistance, sinkage and trim in calm water. Typical results are time series and response amplitude operators.

Rajesh Tripathi assumed charge as the new Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of the public sector Dredging Corporation of India (DCI) w.e.f. February 02, 2015. Capt. D. K. Today the results of the World Ferry Safety Association international student design competition for a Safe Affordable Ferry were announced. The goal of the design competition is to elicit new approaches for ferry design in the developing world as well as to encourage designers to enter this arena, for which there is a need and an emerging market. An announcement of the winners, chosen by an esteemed team of judges (see below), and a recognition of all participants, will take place at the Annual Meeting of Interferry, in Malta, on October 7. Inchcape Shipping Services (ISS), a maritime services provider, has created a dedicated US Gulf Documentation Department to meet customer demand for a centralized and streamlined service to handle cargo documentation for import and export activity. The new department will provide expert oversight and guidance for the specific documentation functions that remain in US Gulf ports and provide customers with the best advice and support. Companies already benefiting from the department include Tokyo Marine Europe, Gearbulk and Grieg Star. ISS will now be expanding the service to further key customers with activity across the US Gulf. Shipbridge announced as new distributing partner. VSTEP, in cooperation with its distributing partner Shipbridge, have successfully delivered and installed a NAUTIS desktop simulator at the National Taiwan Ocean University in Keelung, Taiwan. The Ocean University is a leading institute for maritime education and oceanographic studies in Taiwan. It also harbours the department of merchant marine and the department of shipping & transportation management. After careful evaluation of the simulator market, the Taiwan Ocean University selected NAUTIS for its high quality and efficient maritime simulation and training, combined with superior visuals and affordability. The simulator will be used to train university maritime students and maritime professionals in shiphandling and manoeuvring.

The original two-year MOU has been renewed indefinitely following major progress towards running demonstration projects in Bangladesh as a pilot for taking the safety initiative worldwide. The new agreement was signed in London by IMO secretary-general Efthimios Mitropoulos and Interferry CEO Len Roueche. The trade association has IMO consultative status and a global membership of more than 200 leading operators and suppliers. Mr Roueche said: “This commitment to our ongoing cooperation will be crucial in helping to prevent thousands of avoidable deaths. Initial funds have been raised for key elements of the Bangladesh pilot programme, which is based on proposals from a working group including the national maritime administration, local operators and other stakeholders.

Indian shipping companies can now charter out their vessels to foreign companies without prior government approval, a Surface Transport ministry official said. He said the Department of Shipping has, however, stipulated that the companies will need to submit monthly fixture reports to the Director-General of Shipping.
