Maritime Propulsion: The NSMV Power Play

The quest to build a series of five National Security Multi-Mission Vessels (NSMVs), which will serve as training ships for five U.S. maritime academies, has drawn a broad cadre of suppliers. The powerplant was a main focus, helping to evolve the schools from steam power plants to a modern propulsion package.NSMVs being built for the maritime academies is widely lauded as a ‘win’ for U.S. shipbuilding, an example of commercial shipbuilding practices applied to a government shipbuilding project.

Eminox, KBB Partner in Marine Engine Emission Reduction Solution

MAN Introduces the 'Game Changer'

What would Rudolf Diesel say if he could see and compare his engine versus todays’ newest diesel engine development from MAN Diesel & Turbo? As the Augsburg based engine maker claims, “A cylinder output of 1,300 kW this engine puts us to the top.” The largest version of the new engines is a 20-cylinder unit (20V45/60) comes with a limit-pushing power output of 26 MW. MAN Unveils Its New Flagship Engine

MAN has revealed the successor to its 48/60CR engine in the company’s 4x line of high-performance diesel engines. The MAN 45/60CR marine diesel engine will initially be available as 12V and 14V versions that boast power outputs, of 15,600 and 18,200 kW respectively, with inline versions following at a later stage. Lake Constance Ferry to Test MTU Gas Engine

From 2019, Rolls-Royce Power Systems and the City of Constance public utility are to begin testing the marine propulsion technology of the future on Lake Constance. This takes the form of a gas engine carrying the MTU brand. The public utility's new car ferry is to be equipped with twin eight-cylinder Series 4000 gas engines from MTU, each delivering 746 kW. This makes it the first inland waterway passenger vessel in Europe to be propelled by straightforward high-speed gas engines. The fuel will be liquefied natural gas.

Cummins Delivers First QSK95 Engines

Manufacturer of diesel engines and generator sets for the marine industry Cummins Inc. said it recently delivered the first four QSK95 engines for a marine application, with four additional units to be delivered in December. The engines were delivered to longtime Cummins partner SEACOR Marine Holdings Inc. for installation into a 57-meter catamaran crewboat designed by Incat Crowther. “We are extremely excited to be working with SEACOR Marine to launch the first QSK95 marine engines,” said Jim Schacht, Executive Director - Marine Market, Cummins Inc.

New GE Marine Diesel Engines EPA, IMO, Emission Compliant

GE Marine technology enables its L250 and V250 marine diesel engines to be compliant without exhaust after-treatment. At the International WorkBoat Show 2012 in New Orleans, GE Marine announce its timeline for meeting EPA Tier 3 and Tier 4i, as well as IMO Tier III emission compliance without the need for exhaust gas after-treatment for its L250 and V250 marine diesel engines. GE’s engine technology eliminates the need for a Selective Catalytic Reduction system (SCR) and storing or using urea aboard a vessel, thereby preserving cargo and tank space.

Diesel Engine Manufacturer to Expand US Plant

Diesel engine propulsion and power manufacturerTognum, will expand its Aiken Plant for MTU engines and add 20 new jobs over the next two years. The $40 million expansion project is made possible in part by the support of Aiken County, S.C. and the State of South Carolina. Expansion plans for the MTU Aiken Plant include two new research and development buildings that will house new engine test equipment, as well as additional visitor and employee parking areas. Construction has already begun, and Tognum America Inc., an American subsidiary of Tognum AG, expects to complete the new facilities by the end of this year. Tognum to Invest $40 Million in Expansion of Aiken Plant

Tognum, the specialist for propulsion and power solutions, will expand its Aiken Plant for MTU engines and add 20 new jobs over the next two years. The $40 million expansion project is made possible in part by the support of Aiken County, S.C., and the State of South Carolina. CIMAC to Focus on Engines and Cylinders

It is estimated that 80 to 90 percent of world trade in volume terms is carried by vessel. There are approximately 86,000 ocean going merchant ships over 100 gt in operation. About 97 percent of them are propelled by large-bore, highly supercharged diesel engines. State-of-the-art diesel engines with maximum availability have to be reliable, maintenance-friendly, highly efficient, and they have to operate at lowest emissions. Cylinder condition is a very important item in diesel engine technology and development. MHI, VINASHIN Sign Licensing Agreement

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) signed an agreement to license its UE low-speed diesel engine technology to Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (VINASHIN). Under the agreement, MHI will provide VINASHIN with the licensing rights to manufacture its large-sized diesel engines. The contract applies specifically to the Mitsubishi UEC-LA, LA, LSII and LSE engines with cylinder bores ranging from 330 to 680 mm. The agreement also encompasses marketing and servicing of these engines in Vietnam. The period of licensing is from 2005 to 2014.

Coral Princess Employs Innovation in Propulsion

Coral Princess’ propulsion system is the first in the cruise industry to fully utilize a new development of the diesel engine known as an EnviroEngine, as well as the first in the Princess fleet to incorporate gas turbine power generation. This combination uses technology proven to be both highly efficient and environmentally sound, and, in a unique design development where the gas turbine is installed in the ship funnel, provides additional space for a wider range of public rooms and onboard facilities. Coral Princess is powered by one gas turbine that operates in conjunction with two diesel EnviroEngines. The turbine replaces at least two diesel engines and by using two separate power systems, this unique one-of-a-kind configuration creates a very reliable and safe energy source.
