HHI Builds 10,000th HiMSEN 4-Stroke Marine Engine
Shipbuilder and a marine engine manufacturer Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) announced it has produced its 10,000th HiMSEN (Hi-Touch Marine and Stationary Engine) engine installed on a 14,400 TEU containership ordered from Costamare, Greece. The HiMSEN engines are medium speed four-stroke engines that HHI independently developed in 2001 with 10 years of research and development, and can be used for both ship propulsion and power generation for onshore power plants. Houston Hybrid RTG's to Install Saft Li-ion Batteries
Saft contracted by MJ EcoPower Hybrid Systems to supply leading-edge lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries for four new hybrid-powered mobile RTG (Rubber Tyred Gantry) cranes serving Houston Harbor, Texas. The contract is an important breakthrough for Saft in the US hybrid RTG crane market that is set for growth as operators seek to drive down their fuel costs while reducing emissions. There are up to 600 existing RTG cranes in US harbors that could potentially be retrofitted with hybrid power systems, while around 150 new cranes are built every year for the global market. RTGs play an important logistics role in ports and harbors, where they are used to transport and stack shipping containers during ship loading and unloading.
Horizon Lines Plan Diesel/LNG Engine Fuel Conversions
Horizon Lines plans to convert the power plants on two of its steam turbine cargo vessels to modern diesel engines capable of burning conventional liquid fuels or liquefied natural gas (LNG). "We are viewing this as the first step in a repowering initiative for Horizon Lines vessels serving in the Hawaii and Puerto Rico trade lanes," said Sam Woodward, President and Chief Executive Officer. "The two initial steam vessels targeted for the planned repowering are structurally viable for the conversion from steam-powered to dual diesel/LNG engines.

Military Sealift Command, Operation Pacer Goose 2010
With the Aug. 9 return of Military Sealift Command-chartered dry cargo ship MV American Tern to Naval Station Norfolk, Va., the resupply mission to remote Thule Air Force Base, Greenland, successfully concluded. This year, two vessels - American Tern and tanker USNS Samuel E. Cobb - delivered fuel, heavy vehicles and containerized cargo to Thule as part of Operation Pacer Goose, the annual resupply of the base. Civilian contract mariners aboard ships like these have provided key support in supplying this remote location since 1952. Operation Pacer Goose is one of the Arctic outpost's few sources of food, spare parts and other manufactured goods needed each year.

Wärtsilä to Power Australian FPSO
Wärtsilä Corporation won a contract to supply a 31.5 MW diesel power plant for a floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel for the Mutineer-Exeter field of Santos Ltd off the north west coast of Australia. The plant has been ordered by MODEC Inc of Tokyo, Japan, a leading designer and supplier of FPSO vessels, floating storage and offloading (FSO) vessels and tension-leg platforms for the world oil and gas industry. MODEC is converting an existing Suezmax tanker, of about 150,000 tdw, into a turret-moored FPSO vessel for Santos Ltd of Australia. It will be operated by MODEC on the Mutineer-Exeter field (WA-191-P) which is located approximately 150 km due north of Dampier on the north west coast of Australia.
USS San Antonio (LPD 17) in Production
The Navy’s newest amphibious ship, the amphibious transport dock USS San Antonio is in production. USS San Antonio is the first ship of 12 amphibious ships that will support the Marine Corps’ landing forces and embarked Marines in forward presence operations throughout the world. Designed to fully support Marine Corps missions involving amphibious or expeditionary maneuver warfare, as well as special operations, the ship has a flight deck for aircraft and a well deck for landing craft or tracked amphibious vehicles. Each ship can carry 720 Marines, land them by Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicles, or fly them to their objective areas in a variety of helicopters or vertical take-off and landing aircraft. Todd Pacific Completes Unique Project
Todd Pacific Shipyard of Seattle recently completed construction, assembly and delivery on time of a 70 mW floating power plant for the Central American country of Nicaragua. The hull was launched in January 1999 as Margarita II, followed by power plant assembly and integration on the vessel afloat at Todd's facility. The initial part of the job had Todd constructing the barge hull and deckhouse. Once afloat, Todd worked with MAN B&W Diesel from Germany, Siemens and various subcontractors to assemble the complete diesel power plant. A highlight of the project was the transfer of four 350-ton MAN B&W Diesel engines from a heavy-lift cargo carrier onto Margarita II, followed by translation of the engines to their final positions.
