USCG Marine Safety Alert

The U.S. Coast Guard issued a marine safety alert while it conducts an ongoing investigation into a engine room fire that killed three aboard the Insignia cruise ship in St. Lucia in December. The USCG reminded shipowners to maintain machinery, establish escape routes, and conduct thorough engineering watches. The fire started after a bolted flange parted and a fuel oil spray under pressure developed from an operating engine’s fuel supply line. The fuel spray ignited when it contacted the engine’s exhaust piping or turbocharger components. The primary fire was extinguished when the vessel’s fine mist extinguishing system automatically activated and performed as designed. Fuel pumps and shutoff valves were also secured.

Innovation Drives Monitoring System Development

Innovation is a key driver in the development of advanced monitoring systems for environmental and safety compliance in the marine sector. Patrice Flot and Alain Meslati of diesel engine control and instrumentation specialists CMR Group, explain more about the latest technologies. The marine power sector is facing many challenges, particularly in areas where emissions resulting from combustion inside engines, along with fuel consumption levels need to be reduced. These and other…

Good Fuel = Good Profits

More than ever, emphasis on fuel quality — what goes in and what comes out — is a top agenda item of lawmakers and vessel owners alike. With ever tightening pressure on vessel owners to lower consumption and emission numbers, similar pressure has been applied to the maritime supply market to make engines, systems and products that help achieve this end. Algae-X offers a line of fuel conditioning products that it touts as helping owners, both large and small, to meet and exceed the rigors of running profitable, environmentally compliant vessel. "The Port of Everglades Pilots have been using the Algae-X unit for almost two years, and we can honestly say it works," said a letter from the Pilot Association's Boat Maintenance Department, distributed by Algae-X.

Celebrity Links Its Past To Its Future With Millennium

Celebrity Cruise Lines experienced its own "Night At The Oscars" by literally rolling out the red carpet this past June for its inaugural christening ceremony of its new "Millennium" while docked in Southampton, U.K. MR/EN was invited to Southampton to spend a few days onboard this technologically driven vessel before it departed for Amsterdam to begin its maiden voyage - a 14-day journey around Russia and the Baltics. Incorporating old-world style and classic ambiance with its Olympic Restaurant, which houses the original paneling from the R.M.S. Olympic — and delving into new technology by implementing a premiere gas turbine system in its engine room — Celebrity's newest vessel truly exemplifies a "bridge between two centuries…
