7th Z-drive Towboat from Master Marine

In February, Marquette Transportation Co. took delivery of a new 2,000-hp Z-drive towboat from Master Marine, Inc., Bayou La Batre, Alabama. The 78'x 34’x11' St. Phillip was designed by Entech & Associates, for Marquette’s Gulf-Inland division, based in Harahan, La. The steel-hulled St. Phillip is powered by a pair of Thompson Power Systems Caterpillar C32 Tier 3 1,000-hp engines at 1,800 rpm connected to ZF Marine ZF AT 5111WM-FP Z-drives with 1,650 mm (65") 4-bladed propellers in nozzles. The package gives the boat a running speed of 10 knots with a loaded draft of 8’. For ship’s service power the towboat is outfitted with a pair of Kennedy Engine John Deere 4045AFM85 Tier 3 generator drive engines each driving an 80-kW Marathon Mariner generators.

Driving the Inland Waterways

Propulsion evolves, improves and powers forward in the inland markets. And, Z-Drive propulsion is the future. In a white paper released late in 2014 by The Shearer Group, Ed Shearer and Greg Beers outlined The Next Generation of inland vessels, what will drive design changes and the advantages of azimuthing stern drives – or ‘Z-Drives,’ for short. The authors point out that, until recently, towboats on all the inland waterways and Gulf Coast have traditionally been built using main engines connected to reduction gearboxes connected to long drive shafts passing through the towboat hull. The Z-drive revolution on the U.S. In August, Marquette Transportation Co. took delivery of a new 2,000-hp Z-drive towboat from Master Marine, Inc., Bayou La Batre, Alabama. The 78 x 34 x 11 ft. St. Peter was designed by Frank Basile of Entech & Associates, Houma, La., for Marquette’s Gulf-Inland division, based in Harahan, La. Master Marine is continuing to build Z-drive towboats, with more underway for Marquette, said the yard’s president Randy Orr. The company has continued to expand its workforce and production capabilities to handle the increasing demands of its customers.

Gulf Coast Workboat Repowered with Volvo Penta Diesels

Zimco Marine saved $40,000 per engine per boat in fuel costs after repowering two shrimp boats with twin Volvo Penta D13 engines.

Based on impressive fuel consumption and performance results from the Volvo Penta engines installed in a new-construction pushboat, the operator decided to repower one of its older vessels with the same D16 engine package. When Volvo Penta supplied the main propulsion system for the M/V Ted Kayser, a new 60-foot pushboat christened at the end of 2012, it was Allemand Industries, Inc., the Volvo Penta Regional Power Center in Harvey, LA, that oversaw the installation. Double Delivery Houma Style

Last month MarineNews was on hand in Houma, La., for a festive double celebration marking the delivery of a pair of high spec 95-ft. towboats for LeBeouf Bros. Towing. To say that Jon Gonsoulin knows how to throw a party is an understatement. The ubiquitous president of LeBeouf Bros. Towing, LLC of Houma, La., hosted a double delivery celebration without compare last month at his home; one which saw LeBeouf and Gonsoulin welcome the MV Karl Senner and MV Dickie Gonsoulin to the LeBeouf Bros. fleet.

LeBeouf Celebrates Double Christening

Last month a special pair of towboats were celebrated, as LeBouef Bros. Towing of Houma, La., welcomed to its fleet the MV Karl Senner and MV Dickie Gonsoulin in a festive ceremony at the home of Jon Gonsoulin, President, Lebeouf Bros. Towing. While the boat represent many things – a continued boom in the U.S. energy transport business; a nod to the modern mariner as both are seamlessly outfitted for crew comfort – first and foremost they represent a long-standing and still strong bond between Gonsoulin and Karl Senner LLC. Mariner Delivers ABS Classed Ocean-Going Tug

Mariner, LLC has just delivered a new 88-ft. fully ABS classed ocean-going tug. This is the second 88-ft. tugboat built for Smith Marine Towing, Similar equipment to the first vessel but the owner decided to increase horsepower with this vessel with Caterpillar 3512’s rated 1500 hp each. Pushing 4 blade Rolls-Royce stainless propellers through Kort nozzles this vessel has a calculated bollard pull of 45 tons. Lights gensets and the Markey double drum winch is powered by a John Deere engine.

Cheramie & Sons Anticipate New Tug

The Lafayette, La.-based Rene’ J. Cheramie & Sons, has a 116’ x 34’ x 17’ ocean tugboat under construction at Main Iron Works of Houma, La. The new towing vessel, powered by twin 3516B HD Caterpillar diesels will be named ANN T. CHERAMIE. The vessel underwent plating in December and is expected to be delivered in July. tugboat built by Main Iron Works for the Cheramie company. and equipped with a Markey double drum towing winch on the stern deck for ocean towing”. ANN T. CHERAMIE will be the third tugboat designed by Basile for the Cheramie company.

AMT Marine Building Fast Utility Boat at Hope Services

Andy Martin of AMT Marine will take delivery this May of a 136 x 34 x 12-ft. mini-supply boat from Hope Services of Dulac, La. The new boat, designed by Frank Basil's Entech and Associates of Houma, will be powered by a pair of Cummins V-12 KTA38 M0 main engines rated for 850 hp each at 1,800 rpm and driving through Twin Disc MG5301 gears with a ratio of 5.96:1. It's what this combination is driving that makes the story. On the end of each stainless steel six-in. shaft will be mounted a 66 x 54-in. five-blade prop from Padgett-Swan. Computer modelling has shown a gain of up to 1.5 knots with this combination and the five-blade props over four-blade props. Given the new boat's cargo capacities ? approximately 95,000 gallons of water and 90,000 of fuel ?

Bisso Marine Heavy Lift Crews Launch Vessel

Bisso Marine heavy lift crews have launched a 150-ft. by 36 ft. by 11 ft. Deck Cargo/RoRo vessel at Mariner Shipyard in Houma, La. The 375 ton vessel, powered by twin CAT 3412’s is can achieve up to 14 knots. The vessel was slung with lifting cables and placed afloat dockside. Entech & Associates designed the custom vessel for use in the Caribbean for inter-island transport of freight and equipment.

Aries Debuts a New Star

Aries Marine, a Lafayette, La. based offshore vessel company has taken delivery of its fourth 220-ft. class supply boat designed for deep water platform work. The company has 10 supply boats and 14 lift boats in its fleet. At 54 ft. wide, the new Abigail Claire is 10 ft. wider than any of its predecessors and is the first in the Aries Marine fleet rated at DP-2. Vessel depth is 19 ft. and loaded draft is 16 ft. The vessel was built by Thoma-Sea Shipbuilders at their Lockport, La. shipyard and designed by Entech & Associates of Houma, La. Thoma-Sea also has an option to build an additional 220-ft. class vessel for Aries. This option has been exercised and the vessel will be complete early next year with additional vessel construction for Aries likely.
