According to the latest figures from DNV’s Alternative Fuels Insight (AFI) platform, 17 new orders for alternative-fuelled vessels were placed in February 2026.This was almost entirely accounted for by LNG-fuelled vessels (14), with all of these orders placed by the container segment. INEOS Ventures into LNG Carrier Market with MOL Charter Deal
Japan's Mitsui O.S.K. Lines,(MOL) has signed a long-term agreement with INEOS Energy Trading, a subsidiary of UK-based INEOS Group Ltd., for the charter of two newbuild LNG carriers. Ineos to Invest $3.4 bln in Antwerp Port
Europe’s largest petrochemicals company Ineos has chosen the Port of Antwerp as the location for a mega-investment of three billion euros ($3.4 billion).The British chemical company's investment will be the biggest in the European chemical industry in two decades.Belgium port will be the location for iIneos' project for an ethane gas cracker and world-scale PDH unit in Europe. Ethane Carrier GasChem Beluga Named
A new liquefied ethylene gas carrier (LEG) was named on Teesside today. Operated by German shipping company Hartmann Reederei and GasChem Services, the new eco-friendly sea vessel GasChem Beluga will carry shipments of ethane gas from Houston to SABIC’s cracker at Wilton on Teesside under a long-term time charter. SABIC recently converted its Teesside cracker during a major investment to enable it to take ethane gas alongside other feedstocks, to make it one of the most flexible and competitive crackers in Europe.

G50ME-C9 Engine Successfully Passes TAT
MAN Diesel & Turbo’s G50 engine has successfully passed its Type Approval Test at Mitsui in Japan. Upon entering service, the engine will power the world’s first ethane-fuelled eco-friendly LEG (Liquefied Ethane Gas) carrier – the first of three such vessels to be built in China by SinoPacific Shipyard for the German shipowner, Hartmann Reederei. Besides operating on ethane, the flexible ME-GI engine will be able to operate on HFO, MDO and gas oil. Propulsion efficiency will be further improved by employing an MAN Kappel propeller with rudder-bulb system.
LR Establishes New Notion for LFPF
Lloyd’s Register (LR) has developed a new notation for low-flashpoint fuels (LFPF), allowing owners and shipyards to demonstrate that their design and construction meet requirements.The notation will come into effect as of January 1, 2016, as part of LR’s and Regulations. In the last 12 months, the industry experienced two major changes in legislation with the revised International Code for the Construction and Equipment of Ships Carrying Liquefied Gases in Bulk (IGC Code) and the adoption of the International Code of Safety for Ships using Gases or other Low-flashpoint Fuels (IGF Code). Wärtsilä 50DF Engine Operates on Ethane
The Wärtsilä 50DF marine engine has been tested and certified to run on ethane (LEG) fuel. The testing program was carried out by Wärtsilä in close collaboration with Evergas, an owner and operator of seaborne petrochemical and liquid gas transport vessels. "We are very pleased that the Wärtsilä engines will be capable of utilizing ethane boil-off gas as fuel. It increases our operational efficiency and improves flexibility in the bunkering of fuels. All in all it results in a significant reduction in operating costs, while also providing a minimal environmental footprint. It also enables us to offer our customers increased flexibility, which has a monetary value to them," said Steffen Jacobsen, the CEO of Evergas.
Yangzijiang Diversifies into LNG Vessel Buildiing

Navigator Declares Further Newbuilds
Navigator Holdings Ltd. today announced that it has exercised its last remaining option to construct a 22,000 cubic meter gas carrier at Jiangnan Shipyard (Group) Co Ltd. in China at the previously agreed construction price of $44 million, with the vessel scheduled for delivery in March 2016. Furthermore, Navigator has entered into a contract with Jiangnan to construct a 35,000 cubic meter gas carrier for delivery in April 2016. This vessel will be the largest ethane gas carrier on the market enabling efficient transportation to our customers for this essential petrochemical feedstock. The company has an option agreement for the construction of up to three further ethane capable 35,000 cubic meter vessels.
Iran Invites Foreign Bids
Iran has invited foreign companies to develop its offshore South Pars gas field, the first such call since President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad took power in August, Iran-Mania.com reported. The Iranian National Oil Company has placed four international tenders for the development of phases 19 to 22 of South Pars, the largest offshore field in the world. Iran has divided the gas field, located on the Iran-Qatar border in the Persian Gulf and shared by the two countries, into 25 phases. The tenders' document said that the most-recent phases will supply 100 million cubic meters (3,500 million cubic feet) per day of natural gas for domestic consumption.
