Australian Navy Commissions Destroyer HMAS Sydney

GE Powers Canada’s New Combat Ships

GE Aviation’s marine gas turbines are the ideal solution for the Royal Canadian Navy’s next generation surface combatant program, GE Marine said Thursday at the CANSEC 2018 trade exhibition.“GE’s LM2500 family of engines are used by the Royal Canadian Navy and 34 other navies worldwide, setting the benchmark for reliability. The global fleet of GE gas turbines has logged over 15 million operating hours in the marine environment and another 90 million in industrial applications,” said Brien Bolsinger, GE’s Vice President, Marine Operations, Cincinnati, Ohio.

RJE to Build GE Gas Turbine Modules for Australian Navy Frigates

GE’s Marine Solutions signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with RJE Global, Morphettville, South Australia, whereby RJE will assemble GE LM2500 gas turbine modules and manufacture a number of components for this engine in support of the Royal Australian Navy’s new SEA 5000 frigate program. The MOU was signed by both companies recently at RJE’s facility in Adelaide. The nine-ship SEA 5000 Future Frigate Program will replace the aging Anzac class frigates. GE’s LM2500 gas turbines are operational on two of the short-listed qualified ship designs -- Fincantieri’s FREMM and Navantia’s F100.

Engine Startup Aboard New Aussie Destroyer

The gas turbines aboard the Royal Australian Navy’s (RAN) new air warfare destroyer (AWD) Hobart have been commissioned. “This is a huge achievement for the project that everyone should be proud of,” said Michael Clements, Test and Activation (T&A) Manager. In preparation for the engines’ commissioning, a production team undertook the load-out of the gas turbine engines onto the ship, followed by integration, alignment, cable and pipe testing and flushing of the supporting systems.

Australian Navy Commissions HMAS Adelaide

GE Marine reports that its LM2500 gas turbines now power the Royal Australian Navy’s HMAS Adelaide which was commissioned in late 2015. Alongside sister HMAS Canberra, these 230-meter-long Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) ships are the largest vessels ever built for the RAN. According to the RAN, HMAS Adelaide was designed with the shallowest possible draft and can deploy an embarked force of more than 1,000 personnel and their equipment, landing ashore via landing craft or helicopters.

GE Contracted to Service Australian Navy Frigates

GE has signed an in-service support contract with the Australian Defense Materiel Organization’s Maritime Cross-Platform Systems Program Office. Under the contract, GE will provide maintenance and logistic support services for the Royal Australian Navy’s (RAN) GE LM2500 aeroderivative marine gas turbines that power Adelaide- and ANZAC-class frigates. GE Delivers LM2500 Gas Turbines for Royal Australian Navy’s

GE Marine reports it has delivered two LM2500 aeroderivative gas turbines to ASC in Adelaide, Australia. The LM2500s will power the Royal Australian Navy’s (RAN) third Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD). ASC, the AWD project shipbuilder within the AWD Alliance, is constructing all three Hobart-class AWDs. Each ship features two LM2500s configured in a CODOG arrangement with two diesel engines. The RAN’s new destroyers are based on the design developed and used by Navantia of Spain for the Spanish Navy’s F100 frigate program.

Emerson, Rederi AB Develop Flowmeters for Fuel Efficiency

Following a joint program by Rederi AB Transatlantic, Transas AB, and Emerson Process Management to develop an onboard solution for better control of marine fuel consumption, Rederi AB Transatlantic has installed Emerson’s Micro Motion Coriolis mass flowmeters on several ships in its fleet. The standard solution uses a compact Micro Motion F100-Series Coriolis sensor with a Model 1700 transmitter to provide highly accurate, traceable and transparent mass-based measurement of fuel oil. Using the MODBUS communications protocol, the mass flowmeter sends data to a fuel efficiency control system supplied by Transas AB in Sweden. This system, also called a Conning unit, collects information from the flowmeter and other onboard systems to help the crew optimize the operation of the ship.

GE Marine reports that it has successfully completed acceptance testing on the first LM2500 aeroderivative marine gas turbine for the Royal Australian Navy’s (RAN) Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD). GE will supply ASC, Adelaide, Australia -- the shipbuilder in the AWD Alliance -- with six LM2500 gas turbines to power three RAN advanced AWDs. Each Hobart class AWD will feature two LM2500s configured into a COmbined Diesel And Gas turbine arrangement with two diesel engines. The vessels will be built at ASC’s Osborne shipyard.

Australia to Spend $11B on Navy Ships

In a speech published on the website of Australian Prime Minister John Howard, it was announced that Australia will make a multi-billion investment to bolster the Australian Navy. The two contracts, one for $3 billion and one for $8 billion, both specify Navantia (Spain) designed warships. The following is direct quotations from the presentation. GE To Supply Gas Turbines for Royal Norwegian Navy

GE Marine Engines reported that its LM2500 aeroderivative gas turbine will power five new Royal Norwegian Navy F310-class frigates. IZAR Construcciones Navales, S.A., will build the frigates at its naval shipyard in Ferrol, Spain. This is the first naval Combined Diesel And Gas Turbine (CODAG) configuration to be installed by IZAR, and the Royal Norwegian Navy is only the second international navy to adopt this arrangement. The Germany Navy uses an LM2500-based CODAG configuration on its new F124-class frigates. The CODAG configuration on each F310-class frigate will consist of one GE LM2500 gas turbine, rated at 21.5 megawatts/28,832 shaft horsepower, combined with the two diesel engines for a total propulsion system rating of 30.5 megawatts.
