IOCs Stress on OSV Fuel Management Performance

Growing insistence by international oil companies (IOCs) that oilfield contract vessels (OSVs) are fitted with fuel monitoring systems has prompted an upsurge in interest in marine engine monitoring systems. Diesel power specialist Royston reports that it is equipping a growing number of offshore vessels with its enginei fuel management system as the oil majors increasingly require the availability of accurate on-board fuel monitoring data as part of the support contracts awarded to shipping companies. Around the world, enginei is now installed on nine vessels working for Chevron, two for BP, one for Addax Petroleum, four for Total, two for Conoco Phillips and one for Exxon.

Fuel Tax Dilemma Solved for Inland Fleets

Operating commercial vessels on inland waterways requires accurate fuel consumption tracking for paying an array of fuel use taxes under the Inland Waterways Revenue Act in addition to those imposed by states and local jurisdictions. In most cases, these taxes apply only to fuel used for propulsion and is based on gallons burned while transiting specific areas. The complexity of tracking fuel burned for tax purposes has been time consuming and sometimes little more than guesswork, neither of which are good procedures for fleet operators. FloScan’s proprietary DataLog Fuel Monitoring Software, included at no-charge with every FloNET Fuel Monitoring System…

Study: Big Savings from Emissions Monitoring

Ship owners could save up to €9m with advanced emissions monitoring. Advanced emissions monitoring of large ships calling at EU ports could help save owners and operators of large ships up to €9 million/year, according to a new study published by sustainable transport group T&E. These savings would come from lower operational costs of using automated systems such as fuel flow meters or continuous emissions monitoring, which are already used by many of the world’s largest shipping companies. The cost savings arise from the electronic collection and reporting of data, which doesn’t require man-hours, as well as the accuracy and verifiability of the data, which significantly reduces verification costs by third parties.
