Nakilat Grows Fleet with Six New LNG and LPG Carriers

Qatar-based energy shipping company Nakilat has placed orders to with Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (HSHI) of South Korea for the construction of six new LNG and LPG carriers.The order includes two LNG carriers with a cargo capacity of 174,000 cubic meters each and four very large LPG/ammonia gas carriers, with a substantial cargo capacity of 88,000 cubic meters.The vessels are set to be delivered between 2026 and 2027, Nakilat said.Upon delivery, Nakilat's LNG fleet will expand to 71 vessels…

MIT to Design Ship for Oldendorff

Dry bulk carrier owner and operator Oldendorff Carriers has signed a research agreement with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's (MIT) Center for Bits and Atoms (CBA) to make its vessels more green and economical.Oldendorff, together with CBA and its campus collaborators including MIT's Sea Grant Program, will investigate disruptive improvements in ship design and propulsion to achieve the IMO 2030/50 requirements.The initial emphasis will be directed at improving hydrodynamic efficiency, which builds on work CBA has been doing with the aerospace and automotive industries. Lydia Oldendorff Sets Record

The largest German bulk carrier company Oldendorff Carriers GmbH, which operates around 700 ships, said that its Lydia Oldendorff (207,562 tdw built 2015) has set a record as the largest vessel to load coal at Puerto Bolivar, Colombia.The Newcastlemax vessel has a length of 300 meters and a breadth of 50 meters and was loaded on a trial cargo draft of 17.5 meters. The cargo loaded is destined for Flushing, in the port of Antwerp in Belgium, where it will again be the largest vessel to enter the port.Oldendorff Carriers currently operates a fleet of about 65 modern eco-Newcastlemax (203-211,000 tdw) vessels. Eco Newbuildings Delivered Simultaneously

In effort to upgrade the fleet, 2019 started with the delivery of five new eco-ships delivered to Oldendorff Carriers, four of which were delivered on the same day. In trying to reduce the environmental impact and these new (fuel-efficient) vessels will reduce fuel consumption for transporting cargo and consequently reduce the carbon footprint.M/V “Jan Oldendorff”, M/V “John Oldendorff”” and M/V “Julius Oldendorff”” were delivered from the building yard Nantong Cosco KHI Ship Engineering Co., Ltd in Nantong, PRC.

DHT Holdings to Acquire Samco Shipholding

DHT Holdings, Inc. announced today that it has entered into an agreement to acquire all the outstanding shares of Samco Shipholding Pte. Ltd., a private company incorporated under the laws of the Republic of Singapore. Samco owns and operates a fleet of seven very large crude oil tankers (VLCCs) with an average age of approximately 4.5 years. Five of the vessels are currently on time charters to oil majors. Included in the transaction is Samco's 50% ownership in Goodwood Ship Management Pte. Ltd., a private ship management company incorporated under the laws of the Republic of Singapore.

Deltamarin Designs Car Carriers at Chinese Shipyard

Deltamarin Ltd. signed a contract with the Chinese Tianjin Xingang Shipbuilding Heavy Industry for Approval and Detail Design work for the two (plus two options) Post Panamax Car Carriers ordered by the Swedish shipowner Wallenius Lines. Prior to this contract, Deltamarin has already developed the Outline and Contract Design together with the shipyard for the owner. Tianjin Xingang shipyard has previously focused on building mainstream vessel types such as bulk carriers. With Deltamarin’s assistance, the yard managed to secure this newbuilding contract of a more sophisticated vessel type. The yard is also currently building 10 bulk carriers of Deltamarin’s B.Delta37 design: four vessels for French Louis Dreyfus Armateurs and six vessels for the US-based M.T. Maritime Management Group.

Maersk Tanker Fleet on Fuel-saving Retrofit Crusade

Maersk Tankers plan to spend up to $35m as it pushes ahead with a fuel saving retrofit programme. One of the company's "I-class" VLCCs is being fitted with fuel saving devices, iincluding Becker Mewis propeller ducts and propeller boss cap fins on a range of owned tankers. The programme includes screening and retrofitting around 70 tankers over the next two to three years, reports Carbon Positive. The company's drive to raise fuel efficiency will focus on as many as 35 separate measures, which will all potentially contribute to fuel savings across the fleet.

New Bulker Design Introduced by Imabari Shipbuilding

Japan's Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. introduce a new class of 33,000 dwt bulk carrier designated 'IS' TRI-STAR. The shipbuilders say that its share of the handy-size bulk carrier market is ranked among the highest in the world. Since 2010, over 30 vessels of the "IS" BARI-STAR, 38,000 dwt-type bulk carrier have been delivered, and over 200 vessels of  the 28,000 dwt-type have been delivered since 1990. However, to satisfy customer demand they have decided to launch their newly developed 33,000 dwt- type bulk carrier –  "IS" TRI-STAR into the handy-size bulk carrier market.
