India has evacuated more than 300,000 people along its northeast coastline by boat, bus and train ahead of a severe cyclone due to make landfall on Friday, with many villagers piling household possessions on to trucks before fleeing their homes.Severe cyclonic storm Fani was churning up the Bay of Bengal about 320 km (198 miles) south-southwest of the Hindu temple town of Puri where special trains were put on to evacuate tourists and the beaches were empty.In total, about 1.2 million people are expected to be evacuated from low-lying areas of 15 districts in the eastern state of Odisha to cyclone shelters, schools and other buildings…

The Transport Accident Investigation Commission has published its report on the February 2017 accident in Port Chalmers, Dunedin, on board the passenger cruise ship Emerald Princess, in which a nitrogen cylinder burst, causing one fatality.The Chief Investigator of Accidents, Captain Tim Burfoot, says the ship’s crew were re-pressurising the gas cylinders after maintenance, when the cylinder burst and fatally injured a nearby crew member.The cylinder was part of a stored energy system providing an alternative means of launching lifeboats in the event of power failure. Such systems are common on cruise ships.“The nitrogen cylinder burst at below normal working pressure because its casing had corroded to about 30% of original thickness,” said Capt.

Hyundai Heavy said it plans to start to build the tanks in May and is set to deliver the tanks to Nigeria's Dangote Oil Refining Company, Africa's largest refinery, beginning in April 2019. The 15 cylindrical tanks - each being eight meters in diameter and 95 meters in length - can hold 75,000 cubic meters of LPG, according to Hyundai Heavy. The 15 gas cylinders w ill be installed at Dangote Oil Reining’s refining and petrochemical plant near Lagos in southwestern Nigeria. The Korean company manufactures and sells ships, offshore structures, plants, engines, and other products in South Korea and internationally.

An exclusion zone was set up around Hatston Pier earlier as the offshore support vessel Subsea Viking which was tied up alongside at the time caught fire at Hatson Pier in Orkney Islands in Scotland’s Orkney Island. The fire started from the diesel generator due to short circuit and extended to the deck. In fire fighting was engaged a coastguard tug, which succeeded to extinguish it for about an hour, but continued to pour water over the support vessel Subsea Viking for half day attempting to cool gas cylinders stored on the deck and to prevent explosion. During the accident there were no injured people and no water pollution, but the quay was closed for a day and forced the ferry due to call to be diverted to a neighboring facility.

SENER reports it has completed the engineering works relating to the re-outfit and overhaul of the Almirante Irizar icebreaker following a fire accident in an Antarctic season. In 2009, the Argentinean Navy and the Tandanor SACyF shipyard asked SENER Ingenieria y Sistemas – Argentina to deliver an engineering integral project for the repair and modernization of the Almirante Irizar icebreaker. Independent safety supplier in the U.K., Ocean Safety, received the EC Certificate of Authorization from Lloyds Register, allowing the company to carry out all in-house certifications of gas cylinders. In accordance with the Transportable Pressure Equipment Directive 2010/35EU, Ocean Safety is now authorized to pressure test many types of cylinders including composite, welded steel, seamless steel and aluminum gas. These cylinders are used in many applications within the commercial and leisure marine markets, including cruise ships, liferaft inflation and fire suppression systems.

The inland waterways of Russia can now benefit form a new standard of safety equipment following the approval granted to the Survitec Group’s Survitec Zodiac brand by the Russian River Register (RRR). The approval was granted after inspectors from the Register completed a detailed study of the liferafts, escape slides and rescue boats manufactured by Survitec Group under the Survitec Zodiac brand. This included verifying their reliability, manufacturing processes and quality control methods employed at the company’s facility in Chevanceaux, France.

Rickmers-Linie’s 19,100dwt Baltic Winter has recently completed the transportation of three LPG storage tanks, each weighing 475 tons, from Kuantan in Malaysia to Shuaiba in Kuwait. Fabricated by KNM Process System Sdn Bhd, part of the global KNM Group, the tanks were destined for the new Kuwait Oil Tanker Company (KOTC) LPG filling station at Umm Al-Aish, to the north of Kuwait City. The new plant will be built on an area of 150,000 square meters and provide 15 million cylinders of gas every year. The overall project, which involves six tanks, is being handled by the Malaysian heavylift transport specialists SGV Logistik Sdn Bhd and Aman Logistics Sdn Bhd. It was SGV Logistik that awarded to Rickmers-Linie the contract to transport the first three units to Kuwait.

The International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) has published an information note on non-destructive evaluation (NDE) testing of gas cylinders. Advancements in NDE testing techniques for gas cylinders have been the subject of extensive discussion by members of the IMCA Diving Division Safety, Medical, Technical & Training Committee (SMTT). A Marine Evacuation System (MES), consisting of a slide or chute where passengers can evacuate straight into waiting life rafts, can often be found on modern high speed crafts and passenger ships, where weight, space and evacuation times must be kept to a minimum. For the first time, a similar system has now also been developed for Special Purpose Ships (SPS). A close relationship between Norwegian-based Brude Safety AS and Ulstein Design has lead to this new type of space saving MES, designed to fit Special Purpose Ships, such as Offshore Support Vessels (OSVs).
