GE Delivers First Gas Turbine Module for USS Santa Barbara

GE Marine announced it has delivered its first new lightweight LM2500 composite gas turbine module to Mobile, Ala. shipbuilder Austal USA for the future USS Santa Barbara (LCS 32).GE is supplying 38 LM2500 gas turbines to Austal USA for LCS Independence variants up to LCS 38. Like all the Austal USA-built LCS, the future USS Santa Barbara will be powered by two GE LM2500 gas turbines arranged in a combined diesel and gas turbine configuration with two diesel engines.This new module, which was fully certified by the U.S.

GE to Supply Equipment for Indian Navy’s Frigate

GE Marine will provide gas turbine auxiliary equipment for the LM2500 engines that will power the Indian Navy’s new P17A frigates. This contract is with India-based Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE), GE reported today at the Aero India trade exhibition.Under the contract, GE will provide gas turbine auxiliary equipment for seven ships to support the 14 LM2500 engines previously supplied under a separate contract.

Marine Jet Power Awarded Repeat Order for Korean Navy

Marine Jet Power has been awarded a repeat order to supply waterjets to another 3 units Patrol Killer Experimental (PKX-B) fast attack craft for the Korean Navy. Last year, South Korean shipbuilder Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction (HHIC) launched the first unit which is currently undergoing sea trials. The propulsion system comprises a MJP 950 single drive and MJP 650 double drive waterjet installation. LM2500 Gas Turbine Powers Turkish Navy's MILGEM Corvette

GE’s Marine Solutions announced that the Turkish Navy’s third MILGEM multi-purpose corvette TCG Burgazada was launched powered by a GE LM2500 gas turbine-based propulsion system. The launch ceremony was held in mid-June at the Istanbul Naval Shipyard; a keel laying ceremony was also held for sister MILGEM ship TCG Kınalıada. The propulsion system for TCG Burgazada (F-513) is the same as sisters TCG Heybeliada (F-511) and TCG Büyükada (F-512), consisting of an LM2500 gas turbine in a combined diesel and gas turbine configuration with two diesel engines. Total propulsion power is 31,000 kilowatts, allowing the ships to reach maximum speed in excess of 29 knots. The corvettes have an overall length of 99 meters with a displacement of 2,300 tons.

US Navy’s Newest LCSs Feature GE Gas Turbines

The U.S. Navy has recently commissioned and launched two Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) of the Independence-variant, both of which are powered by two GE LM2500 marine gas turbines, GE Marine reports. The USS Jackson was commissioned on December 5 in a ceremony in Gulfport, Miss., following the launch of sister ship LCS USS Omaha in late November, also in Gulfport. Furthermore, according to shipbuilder Austal USA, the future USS Montgomery also is preparing for acceptance sea trials in early 2016.

GE Gas Turbines to Power Turkish Corvettes

GE Marine announced it has signed a contract with Savunma Teknolojileri Mühendislik Ve Ticaret A.Ş. (STM), Ankara, Turkey, whereby GE will provide STM with LM2500 gas turbines. The engines will power the Turkish Navy’s third and fourth MILGEM multi-purpose corvettes, GE reported today during the IDEF ’15 industry trade show. STM is the program manager for these new two ships, and will provide platform systems, construction materials, design services and the main propulsion systems, as well as integration of the propulsion system.

Littoral Combat Ship USS Coronado (LCS 4) was commissioned by the United States Navy on April 5 at its home port of San Diego, California. MTU Diesel Gensets for Type 26 British Combat Ship

Tognum subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH and Rolls-Royce have jointly been awarded the contract to design the diesel generator sets for the Royal Navy´s future Type 26 Global Combat Ship. BAE Systems made the announcement at the International Defense and Security Equipment exhibition (DSEi) in London. The propulsion system will consist of a combination of four MTU diesel gensets powered by Type 20V 4000 M53B engines, and a Rolls-Royce Type MT30 gas turbine. Combined propulsion systems utilizing diesel engines and gas turbines are increasingly gaining in significance in the naval sector. The future Type 26 Global Combat Ship will employ a CODLOG (Combined Diesel Electric or Gas Turbine) configuration.

GE to Supply Austal with Gas Turbines for Navy Ships

GE Marine said it will provide Austal USA, Mobile, Ala., with four LM2500 marine aeroderivative gas turbines to power the United States Navy’s 14th and 16th Independence-variant Littoral Combat Ships (LCS). GE is providing 20 LM2500 gas turbines for the Austal USA LCS program, part of a contract for up to 10 ships over a five-year period. The Austal-built LCSs are powered by two LM2500s arranged in a combined diesel or gas turbine configuration with two diesel engines. According to Austal, Coronado (LCS 4) will complete sea trials later this spring.

GE LM2500 Gas Turbines to Austal USA

GE Marine reports that it will provide Austal USA, Mobile, Alabama, with two LM2500 aeroderivative gas turbines to power the United States Navy’s third LCS-Class-Independence variant. To be named USS Jackson, the vessel will be powered by the LM2500s arranged in a combined diesel and gas turbine configuration with two diesel engines. “GE continues investing in the LM2500 technology to meet customer needs, and we are delighted that Austal and the U.S. Navy recognize the reliability of this engine by again selecting it for this LCS application,” said Brien Bolsinger, GE Marine general manager.

Rolls-Royce MT30 Genset Achieves Full Power Ops with Navy

Rolls-Royce has achieved full power operation of its first production MT30 powered main turbine generator set delivered to the U.S. Navy. The MT30, delivered to the U.S. Navy for the DDG-1000, USS Zumwalt program, achieved full power operation at 36 MW during testing at the US Navy’s land based test site in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The selection by the US Navy for the DDG-1000 program marks the first large gas turbine engine ordered by the U.S. Navy for use in a generator set providing electrical power for propulsion and on-board systems throughout the ship.

GE Marine Engines Extends MSS Agreement with MTU

GE Marine Engines announced it has extended its Marine System Supplier (MSS) agreement with MTU Friedrichshafen (MTU), covering MTU's packaging and distribution of GE LM marine aeroderivative gas turbines. "Our successful MSS agreement with MTU dates back to the 1970s," said Karl Matson, general manager of GE Marine Engines. "This relationship has made it possible for our LM1600, LM2500 and LM2500+ gas turbines to be used alone or in combination with MTU diesel engines from their full line of diesel engines. GE LM gas turbines cover the power range from 4,500 kilowatts (kW) to 42,700 kW. To date, MTU has packaged several GE LM gas turbines for commercial fast ferries and military vessels.

GE to Supply IHI with LM2500 Gas Turbines

GE Transportation's marine gas turbine business announced it will supply Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries, Co. Ltd. (IHI) with four GE LM2500 aeroderivative gas turbines. The engines will power the first of a new class of Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force's (JMSDF) helicopter-carrying destroyers. The first vessel will be know as the 16DDH, and it is anticipated that at least one additional DDH destroyer will be built in the coming years. The 13,500-ton DDH destroyer will use two propulsion trains, each consisting of two LM2500s in a COmbined Gas turbine And Gas turbine configuration (COGAG), driving a propeller through a gearbox. The engines will each provide 25,000 shaft horsepower.

GE Powers Polish Navy

GE Marine reports that its LM2500 gas turbine will be used to power the Polish Navy’s next generation Type 621 corvette, to be named Gawron. The LM2500 gas turbine will be applied in a combined diesel and gas turbine configuration, with two diesel engines. GE’s LM2500 gas turbine currently powers the Polish Navy’s Gen. K. Pulawski frigate. The gas turbine for the Gawron will be manufactured at GE Marine’s Evendale, Ohio facility. The LM2500 will be placed into a propulsion module by Avio of Torino, Italy. Avio, a GE partner, will also design and supply the LM2500 module electronic control system. The new corvette will be built by Poland’s Gdynia Shipyard, Warsaw, Poland. Installation of the gas turbine module is slated for June 2008.

GE To Supply Gas Turbines for Royal Norwegian Navy

GE Marine Engines reported that its LM2500 aeroderivative gas turbine will power five new Royal Norwegian Navy F310-class frigates. IZAR Construcciones Navales, S.A., will build the frigates at its naval shipyard in Ferrol, Spain. This is the first naval Combined Diesel And Gas Turbine (CODAG) configuration to be installed by IZAR, and the Royal Norwegian Navy is only the second international navy to adopt this arrangement. The Germany Navy uses an LM2500-based CODAG configuration on its new F124-class frigates. The CODAG configuration on each F310-class frigate will consist of one GE LM2500 gas turbine, rated at 21.5 megawatts/28,832 shaft horsepower, combined with the two diesel engines for a total propulsion system rating of 30.5 megawatts.
