Safety Body: Equinor's Melkøya LNG Plant Broke Rules Ahead of 2020 Fire

Equinor must fix a series of rule breaches exposed by a fire at its Melkoeya liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant in Norway last year for the plant to reopen, the country's safety watchdog said on Thursday.The September 2020 blaze shut down production at the plant, also referred to as Hammerfest LNG, and Equinor has said it could take until October to be repaired."The serious breaches that we saw are related specifically to management and compliance to procedures ... and also to manning in the organization…

ABS Publishes Fuel Cell Guidance

USS Fitzgerald Arrives in Pascagoula for Repair

U.S. Navy warship USS Fitzgerald, which was damaged and nearly sunk after a fatal collision with a cargo ship in June and then was damaged again while on board a heavy lift transport vessel, has arrived in Pascagoula, Miss., for repair work at Huntington Ingalls Industries shipyard. The Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer arrived in Pascagoula on January 19, aboard heavy lift vessel MV Transshelf inward bound from Yokosuka, Japan. Fitzgerald is expected to spend several days in the Port of Pascagoula as the heavy lift ship will commence the reverse operation of unfastening, lowering and guiding the ship down off of the platform. The warship will then be taken to its designated pier space at the shipyard. that killed seven U.S. Navy Sailors.

GE, DSIC Unveil Plan for LNG Carrier Power Conversions

GE’s Marine Solutions and Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co. Ltd. (DSIC) completed a preliminary design for the conversion of a steam turbine powered LNG Carrier (LNGC) to a gas turbine-based propulsion system. The study aims at steam powered LNGCs that offer low fuel efficiency but are not ready to be retired from service. GE Gas Turbines Power Japanese Destroyer

GE's Marine Solutions reports that the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) commissioned its second Izumo-class helicopter-carrying destroyer. The new JS Kaga (DDH 184) is powered by four GE LM2500 marine gas turbines, and was commissioned at the Japan Marine United Corporation shipyard in Yokohama on March 22, 2017. First-in-class JS Izumo (DDH 183) and JS Kaga are the largest surface combatants in the JMSDF fleet. Both feature a powerful and reliable combined diesel and LM2500 gas turbine propulsion system, with the gas turbines using GE’s integrated electronic controls.

ABS Awards AIP for Innovative LNG Carrier Design

GE’s Marine Solutions and Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd. (HZ) have received Approval in Principle (AIP) from the America Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for a jointly developed liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier design to be powered by GE’s Combined Gas Turbine Electric and Steam (COGES) system. “We are delighted to work with Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding on this 178,000 cubic-meter LNG carrier design that will use our efficient, reliable and dual-fuel marine gas turbine,” said GE’s Brien Bolsinger, Vice President, Marine Operations.

Waller Marine to Support Philippine FPP Project

Waller Marine, Inc, (WMI), of Houston, Texas, has been contracted by Vires Energy Corporation of the Philippines to produce the Front End Engineering Design (FEED) of a nominal 400 MW Floating Power Plant (FPP) that will be installed in Southern Luzon for supply of power into the Luzon grid. Generating technology selected for the vessel will be Siemens Industrial Trent 60 WLE ISI dual fuel packaged gas turbine generator sets operating in simple cycle mode. Gas Turbine Powered LNG Carrier Earns Lloyd’s Register AIP

GE Marine and Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Company (DSIC) announced at the SMM 2014 exhibition they have received Approval in Principle (AIP) for their jointly developed gas turbine-powered LNG carrier design. The AIP, issued by Lloyd’s Register, was sought for this LNG carrier since this is an innovative and novel concept not covered by traditional classification rules. It was late 2013 when the three companies initially announced the gas turbine LNG design and then swiftly set out to obtain AIP.

Rolls-Royce to Supply Engines for Huge UAE Offshore Project

Rolls-Royce has been awarded a strategic contract to supply Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company (ADMA-OPCO) with power generation equipment and related services to help boost oil and gas processing at the Satah Al- Razboot (SARB) offshore project in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The contract was awarded by the Korean engineering, procurement and construction firm Hyundai Engineering and Construction (HDEC) and is the first Trent 60 gas turbine sale to a Korean EPC. The SARB project, say Rolls-Royce, will play a key role in boosting domestic oil and gas production in the UAE.

Asia's First Floating LNG Project to Have GE Compressors

GE Oil & Gas to supply gas turbine-driven compressor train technology to Malaysia’s Petronas for a floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility. The start-up of the FLNG facility is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2015. It will be moored about 180 kilometers off the coast of Bintulu, Sarawak, and is designed to produce 1.2 million tons a year (mtpa) of LNG. Once on stream, the facility will boost Malaysia’s total LNG production capacity to 26.9 mtpa from 25.7 mtpa currently. GE’s compression trains are vital elements of the liquefaction process, which cools natural gas to a liquid state. DDG 1000: Milestone at U.S. Navy Test SIte

Converteam in partnership with the U.S. Navy have successfully tested the DDG 1000’s high voltage Integrated Power System (IPS)(1) to full power at the Land Based Test Site located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. DDG 1000 is the first U.S. Navy surface combatant to leverage this technology—an all-electric architecture providing electric power for both propulsion and ship services. As the integrated power systems provider, Converteam is responsible for the entire program’s high voltage system design, commissioning and testing at the land based test site. The test demonstrated full power operations of the IPS, which is a major milestone prior to delivery of equipment to the ship.

Two 171 MW Floating Power Plants for Venezuela

Waller Marine, Inc of Houston, Texas will soon launch and christen what will become the world’s largest floating power generation facility when installed at a designated site in Venezuela. The two power barges, which Waller has under construction at the Signal International Shipyard in Orange, Texas, will be transferred from their land based construction locations to the water during the next few days and christened by Venezuelan dignitaries at a ceremony at the shipyard on August 21.

GE to Power Royal Australian Navy’s LHD Ships

GE Marine announced that it will supply the Spanish shipbuilder, , with two LM2500 aeroderivative gas turbines. The LM2500s will power two new Royal Australian Navy (RAN) Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) amphibious ships. In February 2007, Navantia and ’s Tenix Group announced the two companies will jointly construct the two new LHD vessels. Navantia will oversee the ships’ design and construction, power plants and platform control system. The Tenix Group will handle the construction of the superstructure and the bulk of the fit-out at its facility.

Rolls-Royce Wins $73M Petrobras Contract

Rolls-Royce announced a new order from the Brazilian state oil company, Petrobras, for an additional four gas turbine power generation packages valued at $73m for use on a new offshore platform. This brings the number of Rolls-Royce gas turbine generator sets for Petrobras offshore projects to 27 since 2001, with a total value of more than $300m The new order is for RB211-powered generating set packages for the $1.2b P-56 semi-submersible platform, which is part of the development of the Marlim Sul field, located off the coast of in the Campos Basin, Brazil’s most abundant oil production area.

GE Gas Turbines Power Three New Cruise Ships

GE announced that three new cruise ships recently went into service powered by GE LM aeroderivative gas turbines. The three ships -- Serenade of the Seas, Island Princess and Oosterdam -- each took their maiden voyage during July 2003. “GE is delighted to see the number of cruise ships continue to rise steadily that rely on our reliable and efficient LM gas turbines for propulsion as well as onboard power,” said Karl Matson, general manager of GE Marine Engines. “To date, 22 LM2500+ and four LM2500 GE gas turbine-generator sets are in operation or slated for service on 21 cruise ships.

The world’s largest transatlantic liner, the Queen Mary 2, set sail on its maiden voyage powered by two GE LM2500+ aeroderivative gas turbine-generator sets and four diesel generator-sets. The new flagship of the British merchant fleet, owned by Cunard Line, will take 14 days to sail from Southampton in the United Kingdom to Fort Lauderdale, Fla. A special highlight of Queen Mary 2’s inaugural schedule will be her maiden eastbound crossing from New York on April 25 as both Queen Mary 2 and Queen Elizabeth 2 sail in tandem.

GE Focuses on Optimization For Cruise Ships

The natural progression is underway from installation, design and commissioning of GE gas turbines aboard cruise ships to cooperation with users to further enhance operations. GE is focusing its efforts on optimizing maintenance and improved system reliability, the company reported today at the Seatrade Cruise Shipping Convention. "The use of gas turbines to power cruise ships was long in coming, so it seems fitting that the four years since the world's first gas turbine-powered cruise ship set out on its maiden voyage have gone by quickly," said Karl Matson, general manager of GE Marine. Celebrity Cruises' Millennium is the first cruise ship to use gas turbines.

Propulsion: Gas Turbines: Keeping Fresh With Innovation

Keeping pace with the fast-evolving maritime industry is a mantra at GE Marine with its LM aeroderivative gas turbine line. Going forward, GE Marine will see its LM gas turbines applied in several novel and state-of-the-art military and commercial marine projects. One military application in particular — the Office of Naval Research's (ONR) new X-Craft (pictured left) high-speed catamaran — will use two LM2500 in a COmbined Diesel Or Gas turbine (CODOG) configuration with two MTU 16V 595 TE90 diesel engines with a corresponding gearbox and four waterjets. The propulsion system will enable the vessel to reach speeds of 50 knots. According to GE, the X-Craft will set the stage for the U.S. Navy's next generation of warship, the Littoral Combat Ship.

Gas Turbines Continue Making Commercial Inroads

GE Marine Engines has been supplying integrated propulsion systems for a variety of commercial and military marine customers for more than 25 years. GE's complete line of aeroderivative gas turbines includes the LM500 (6,000 hp), LM1600 (20,000 hp), the LM2500 (33,600 hp), the LM2500+ (40,500 hp) and the LM6000 (57,330 hp). For instance, the first gas turbine-powered fast ferry in Greece entered service in the summer of 2001. This Corsaire 14000-class monohull is powered by two GE LM2500+ gas turbines in a combined diesel and gas turbine (CODAG) arrangement with two diesel engines. The ship was built for operator Maritime Company of Levos (NEL), Piraeus, Greece, by Alstom Leroux Naval Shipyard in France.

DR to Supply Offshore Platform

Dresser-Rand will supply power generation, gas export and recompression equipment for Statoil's Kristin platform in the North Sea. The equipment will be supplied under terms of a contract approaching $48 million that is part of D-R's frame contract with Statoil. D-R will supply two DR61GP generator sets, a DR61GP driven DATUM compressor and two DATUM compressor trains driven by electric motors to the offshore platform. D-R's facility in Kongsberg/Drammen, will assemble and test the gas turbine generator sets as well as assemble the gas turbine compressor driver package. The company's LeHavre, France, facility will provide the DATUM centrifugal compressor packages. Delivery of the compressors and generator sets is scheduled for mid-2003. The platform is expected to go online in 2005.

Corsaire 13000 Embodies Integrated, Advanced Propulsion System

The new 440-ft. (134-m) monohull high-speed ferry Corsaire 13000 will soon undergo speed trials at the French shipyard Alstom Leroux Naval, and the successful testing and subsequent operation of the advanced vessel will prove the value of the complete propulsion system supplied by MTU. The ship is planned to operate for the French SNCM (Societe Nationale Maritime Corse-Mediterranee) on the 189-n m. crossing from Marseille and the island Corsica at 42 knots.
