Metal Trades Builds Hull for Barge Conversion

Metal Trades, Inc. (Hollywood, SC) has built and delivered the outer hull for a double hull fuel barge conversion for Cross State Towing Company of Jacksonville, FL. The 256 ft long by 56 ft wide outer hull was designed by Glowacki Engineering to retrofit on the outside of the 17,000 BBL cargo tank bay in compliance with USCG and OPA 90 requirements. Modeling Cranes on Barges with GHS

A new addition to GHS software, the Crane Module, helps naval architects charged with calculating the complicated effects of a crane's performance on barges. Although the Crane Module is useful for modeling any crane, it is especially powerful in modeling large cranes with multiple hooks mounted on a barge or ship. "Crane manufacturers give a limit to the amount of machine list allowed as the boom lifts and/or rotates," explained Ed Glowacki, owner of Glowacki Engineering, an engineering consulting firm in Florida specializing in naval architecture, "and these cranes are designed to operate on virtually level ground."  Glowacki's consulting firm is often called upon to create a modified crane chart for cranes installed on ships and barges – surfaces that are anything but level.

Horizon To Construct Z-Drive Tug

Horizon Shipbuilding formalized a contract with Dixie Towing, Jacksonville, Fla. for the construction of a 70 ft. (21.3 m) Z-drive tug. Designed exclusively for Dixie by Glowacki Engineering, also of Jacksonville, tug is scheduled for a fall 2000 delivery. The company is also involved in constructed a 135 ft. (41.1 m) dinner cruise vessel and a series of 28 ft. (8.5 m) fiberglass tow targets for the U.S. Navy.

ConAgra Inc., the second largest U.S. food manufacturer, has agreed to sell American Commercial Lines LLC (ACL) its large U.S. inland barge fleet and operations. Financial terms of the deal, which ConAgra said was part of ongoing series of strategic divestments, were not announced. ACL will acquire 930 owned and chartered barges, nine chartered towboats and one dry dock, the companies said in a joint statement. The deal includes Peavey Barge Lines, Brown Water Towing Inc. and Superior Barge Lines, Inc. The transaction is subject to regulatory approval but is expected to be completed in the next 30 days, the companies said. Greg Heckman, president and CEO, ConAgra Trade Group, said, "Our decision to sell the barge company is a strategic one.

A recent clutch of 'Rolls-Royce' shipboard equipment and technology contracts in Norway arising out of specialized, capital-intensive newbuild projects testified to the U.K. group's march into the commercial marine domain. For sure, the emergence of the engineering group's name in new mercantile circles is the outcome of last year's acquisition of Vickers, and its Vickers-Ulstein Marine division, rather than the result of U.K. home-grown product diversification. But the new proprietor of the former Ulstein and Vickers' interests intends to build on the platform and integrated system opportunities offered by ownership of the industry's most extensive global network of marine equipment production.

Horizon Delivers Azimuthing Tug

Horizon Shipbuilding, Inc. recently delivered Belle Watling, a 72-ft. Z-drive tug to Dixie Towing of Jacksonville, Fla. The tug was delivered 30 days ahead of its contractual delivery date. Belle Watling is the first azimuthing tug to be built by the Bayou La Batre shipyard. Glowacki Engineering of Jacksonville provided the contract design for Dixie Towing. Detail design was completed by Horizon’s design staff. The boat features a separate engine control room forward of the engine room. The Glowacki design provides for good deck stowage space and stowage below deck. The pilothouse is designed for 360-degree visibility and for working under a bow overhang when engaged in docking operations. The narrow pilothouse width is designed to enhance alongside and docking operations.

Horizon Delivers New Z-Drive Tug to Dixie Towing

Horizon Shipbuilding of Bayou La Batre, Ala., delivered a Cummins-powered Z-drive tug to Dixie Towing of Jacksonville, Fla., on Jan. 12, 2001, 30 days ahead of the contractual delivery date. Belle Watling is the first azimuthing tug to be built by Horizon. The 70- x 26-ft. boat is powered by a pair of Cummins KTA19 M3 engines rated for 500 hp each at 1,800 rpm. The engines turn Ulstein-Aquamaster 370H Z-drives with 52-in. propeller diameters. Dixie Towing owner Robert Gibbs explains that the new boat, named M/V Belle Watling, was nearly two years in planning. Glowacki Engineering of Jacksonville, Florida provided the contract design for Dixie Towing. Detail design was completed by Horizon's in-house design staff.
