Hydrolink Teams with ASRY

Hydrolink, the Sharjah based specialist engineering company, have teamed with leading Gulf Ship Repair Facility ASRY of Bahrain to provide a complete range of hydraulic services to vessel owners and operators. The two Gulf companies have signed an agreement which will allow Hydrolink and ASRY to extend the services they offer to mutual clients. Hydrolink are providing hydraulic experts from Sharjah together with specialist hydraulic repair and test equipment to fit out a purpose built workshop provided by ASRY.

INTERTANKO appoints Bill Box as Managing Editor

Iraq a Gulf Shipping Concern

Iraq has become a key concern for Gulf shippers, the Middle East Newsline reported. Industry sources said maritime security marked a major element in Iraqi reconstruction. They said shippers have monitored the safety of Iraqi ports and water lanes for piracy, organized crime and insurgents. According to experts, oil exports currently provide Iraq with the life-blood of its reconstruction efforts, without which the country's ability to build and regenerate will be greatly hampered. Until either a dedicated waterborne protection force is in place, or a system is developed that would allow vessels to radically minimize time at anchor, the risks may well prove too high and ship owners and operators will choose to go elsewhere. Gulf Navigation Refinances Two Carriers

Gulf Navigation Holding PJSC has announced refinancing 'Gulf Mishref' and 'Gulf Mirdif' petrochemical carriers in less than a month after increasing its capital to AED 1 billion through an Initial Public Offering (IPO). The move underlines the increasing demand for the company’s shipping services, which requires increasing its fleet capacity to meet the demand for its services in the region. Refinancing the two carriers, Gulf Mishref and Gulf Mirdif, is an important addition to the company's petrochemical transportation capabilities.

Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards staged war games in the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday, including a gunboat attack on a model U.S. warship, in Tehran's latest display of military muscle in a Gulf shipping channel vital to world oil exports. Gulf Ships to Join Global Green Drive

Bahraini and foreign ships operating in Gulf waters will soon have to meet international pollution standards that aim to protect marine life and the natural resources of the region. An international convention that comes into effect on August 1 next year will help to ensure that ships do not discharge oil, plastic and rubbish in to the sea, said Marine Emergency Mutual Aid Center director Captain Abdul Monem Mohammad Al Janahi. He said there was an average of 4,000 boats operating within regional waters everyday and many discharge waste oil and rubbish into the sea. Capt Al Janahi said the Gulf region was particularly vulnerable to the effects of pollution because of its shallow and slow moving water takes three to five years to circulate.

Chouest Purchases Tampa Shipyard

On November 18, 2008, Edison Chouest Offshore officials appeared before the Tampa Port Authority in an effort to secure the assignment of Tampa Bay Shipbuilding and Repair’s long-term lease agreement with the port. The authority had no objection to the transfer and, on that date, Tampa Ship, LLC was born. Chouest assumed management and operation of the yard in early December. The Tampa shipyard is a full service conversion, overhaul and repair facility that was previously owned by a group associated with Mobile, AL-based Bender Shipbuilding and Repair.

ECO Expands Aggressive Newbuild Campaign

Edison Chouest Offshore (ECO) announced plans to build several new anchor handling towing supply vessels (AHTS), as well as more than a dozen new generation 280-ft. platform supply vessels (PSV) in its affiliated shipyards in the U.S. All vessels are scheduled to join the ECO domestic fleet within the next three years. Construction highlights feature seven new anchor handlers: Two (2) 348-ft., 21,600 HP new generation anchor handlers and five (5) 288-ft., 16,000 HP vessels. Also slated for construction are fourteen (14) 4,700 deadweight ton PSVs. The Edison Chouest Offshore (ECO) global family of companies announced plans to enlarge its fleet and expand its terminal facilities in support of its customer base. The Chouest newbuild order book contains more than 40 vessels, a vast majority to be constructed at its four U.S.-affiliate shipyards: North American Shipbuilding (Larose, La.), LaShip (Houma, La.), Gulf Ship (Gulfport, Miss.) and Tampa Ship (Tampa, Fla.), as well as its Brazilian shipyard, Navship. ECO’s worldwide fleet now approaches 250 highly specialized offshore service and support vessels. The largest portion of the newbuild program contains 17 vessels, with options for an additional 20, in a new class of 312’ x 66’ x 26’ new generation, clean design, diesel-electric platform supply vessels (PSV).

Iran Uses Maritime Confrontations to Project Power in Gulf

Iran is using its sea power in the Gulf to show it will not be cowed by Washington's newly assertive Arab allies, prompting critics to accuse Tehran of destabilising the region. Iranian ships fired shots at a Singapore-flagged tanker which it said damaged an Iranian oil platform, causing the vessel to flee, and seized a container ship in the Strait of Hormuz, the world's most important oil route, over a debt row. Maritime Piracy Activity is at a 22-year Low -Report

Global maritime piracy activity fell to its lowest level in over two decades, according to the latest International Maritime Bureau (IMB) report. The 180 incidents of piracy and armed robbery against ships reported to the International Chamber of Commerce’s (ICC) IMB in 2017 was the lowest annual number since 1995, when 188 incidents were reported. According to the IMB, pirates boarded 136 vessels in 2017, while 22 attacks were attempted, 16 vessels fired upon and six vessels hijacked.

As US Opens Up Offshore Waters, Eastern GoM Beckons

President Donald Trump's administration has proposed opening up nearly all of America's offshore waters to oil and gas drilling, but the industry says it is mainly interested in one part of it, now cordoned off by the Pentagon: the eastern Gulf of Mexico. The industry's focus on an area located near a sprawling network of existing platforms, pipes and ports could ease the path to new reserves, and assuage the drilling opponents near other places offered under the Interior Department's proposed drilling plan issued last week, like California's Pacific, the Atlantic and Arctic.

Chabahar Port "Win-Win" Situation for India, Iran

Chabahar Port was very important for both India and Iran, and offered a win-win situation to both countries, Indian Minister of Shipping Nitin Gadkari said. A government press release said that Gadkari held bilateral talks with Dr Abbas Akhoundi, Iranian Minister of Roads and Urban Development in New Delhi. He said the port would be a growth engine for India as it opened up an alternate route for exports to Afghanistan and Russia. It  would also open up business opportunities for investors of both India and Iran  to invest in each other’s country, he said.

SBM Offshore Hands over FPSO Turritella to Shell

SBM Offshore said it has completed the transaction related to the sale of floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel Turritella to Shell E and P Offshore Services B.V.   Shell exercised an option to purchase the FPSO from SBM Offshore in summer 2017.    The Turritella FPSO is contracted for the Stones deepwater development in the Gulf of Mexico, which began production in 2016.   The vessel has a daily production capacity of approximately 60,000 barrels of oil and 15 million cubic feet of natural gas.

Canada Fines another Vessel for Speeding

Transport Canada has issued a $6,000 fine to the owner of Panama flagged bulk carrier Federal Cardinal after the supramax vessel allegedly failed to comply with vessel speed restrictions in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. In August Canada put in place a temporary mandate for vessels of 20 meters or more to slow to a maximum of 10 knots due to the increased presence of whales in the western Gulf of St. Lawrence, between the Quebec north shore and just north of Prince Edward Island – a rule that will remain in effect until the whales have migrated away from the area.

Coast Guard Calls off Search for Pilot Missing in GoM

The U.S Coast Guard has called off the search for missing pilot Bill Kinsinger, 55, and his Cirrus aircraft that vanished over the Gulf of Mexico. Last week, Kinsinger had plans to land in Georgiatown, Texas from Wiley Post Airport in Oklahoma City. When the plane failed to land, air traffic controllers attempted to reach Kinsinger, but received no response. Investigators said the plane continued on course past its destination, and was last observed on radar over the Gulf of Mexico, about 219 miles northwest of Cancun.

Guarded Optimism for 2013 from U.S. Gulf Boatbuilders

Caveats and some doubts remain. Marine companies along the Gulf of Mexico will be busy in 2013 producing offshore vessels to meet expected growth in the region’s deepwater drilling sector over the next several years. Vessel repairs will be active too. Worker training will be stepped up to address a skilled labor shortage. And nearly three years after BP’s spill off coastal Louisiana, safety will remain a priority. But with the nation teetering on a fiscal cliff – which may spur tax increases and government spending cuts – demand for official and military vessels could be affected…

GNH Purchases Tankers

Gulf Navigation Holding (GNH), a shipping and marine services company, announced on Saturday a $136.1macquisition of six double-hulled tankers. GNH's acquisition of the six product - Gulf Ahmadi, Gulf Riyad, Gulf Sieb, Gulf Safwa, Gulf Jash and Gulf Shagra - boosts the size of its burgeoning fleet to 18 wholly owned vessels. The new acquisitions, which offer flexible capacity and can carry clean oil, products and ore, are 48,000 metric tons deadweight each.
