GTT Develops Balast Water-Free LNG Feeder & Bunker Vessel Concept

Credit: GTT

French firm GTT has developed a versatile LNG feeder & bunker vessel concept for worldwide operation without the use of ballast water.Every day, many ships carry on board a considerable quantity of seawater as ballast over the oceans. Technically, this is needed in empty or partially loaded conditions, in order to maintain seaworthiness, reach sufficient draft for propeller immersion, and avoid excessive bow slamming.Such ballasting requires investment for the onboard systems and leads to substantial operating costs.

Deltamarin Unveils LNG-powered Containership Design

(Image: Deltamarin)

Deltamarin introduced a new liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered Kielmax container vessel design as vessel owners and operators increasingly turn to the cleaner burning fuel to help reduce shipping emissions. The C.Delta2100 design, part of the Finnish naval architect's C.Delta series, is engineered to offer improved cargo capacity, flexibility and fuel economy and also takes into consideration possibilities to use alternative fuels to reduce carbon footprint or even zero-emissions power production.

The world’s first icebreaking liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier, Christophe de Margerie, has berthed at the gas terminal at Sabetta Port in Russia, becoming the first vessel to do so. Built by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., Ltd. (DSME) in South Korea, the tanker was designed to order for SCF Group, specifically to serve Russia’s Yamal LNG project, and transport LNG year round in the difficult ice conditions of the Ob Bay and Kara Sea. On March 30 the vessel’s master…

PPG’s protective and marine business has received EU Funding for a project which aims to produce a new fouling protection system for commercial vessels. A project development group including PPG, MACtac, Meyer Werft/ND Coatings, VertiDrive and Hamburg Ship Model Basin HSVA are currently working together to establish an automatic application process for allowing a self-adhesive/fouling release film to be used on commercial seagoing vessels. This process will allow shipowners and…

Ship of the Future: Container Feeder

(Photo: Deltamarin)

Deltamarin debuted a design that it dubs the first state-of-the-art container vessel of its series, the A.Delta2300. With extensive R&D the maritime design house delivers what it believes to be a 'best-in-class' design that maximizes cargo capacity, flexibility and fuel economy. Development work has been supported by AVIC Weihai Shipyard in terms of construction friendliness, and has been reviewed and commented on by DNV GL considering the application of the latest rules and industry practices.

UASC, HHI, FutureShip Team Up for New Containerships

Photo: UASC

United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) have recently announced they will expand their fleet with new super-efficient container vessels. Constructed to DNV class, the designs have been optimized through a productive cooperation between FutureShip and Hyundai Heavy Industry (HHI). Setting its sights on competitive slot cost, UASC, one of the world’s fastest growing container carriers, has ordered five 14,000TEU vessels with six options and five 18,000TEU vessels with one option. Recognizing that fuel consumption is an important factor in determining the profitability of new vessels…

Low Resistance Hull Form Developed for BlueTech 42

Wave formation at stern and behind the ship at 14 knots.

Foreship BlueTech Ltd. and Foreship Ltd. have jointly developed a new super-low resistance hull form for the BlueTech 42 bulk carrier. The hull has low resistance through the speed range – not only at design speed. This gives the benefit for owners and operators to choose the speed based on their needs, as every speed is ECO-Speed. Extensive use of in-house RANS-CFD together with innovative and unique design features were the cornerstones for the hull form development. Even the smallest details were optimized, but the entire wave formation was the dominating feature of the development.

Getting Serious About Titanic ll

Titanic ll tank testing

Blue Star Line in conjunction with German hydrodynamic service and consulting group the Hamburg Ship Model Basin (HSVA) has conducted the first model testing of the proposed Titanic II in Germany. A 9.3m wooden model of Titanic II was put through propulsion and power testing in a 300m long tank at HSVA’s Hamburg facilities over four days from September 9-12. “The speed and power performance model testing is one of the critical aspects for a prototype vessel and needs to be verified before a construction contract is completed.

Blue Star Line in conjunction with German hydrodynamic service and consulting company Hamburg Ship Model Basin (HSVA) will next month be conducting the first model testing of the proposed 'Titanic II'. A 9.3m wooden model of Titanic II will be put through resistance and powering tests in a 300m long tank at HSVA’s Hamburg facilities in mid-September. Titanic II is scheduled to be launched from its construction base in China in 2016, before her maiden passenger voyage retracing the original journey from Southampton to New York.

First X-BOW Workboat to be Fitted With VSP

The infield support vessel (ISV) ‘Siem Moxie’ will be the first Ulstein X-BOW workboat to be fitted with two Voith Schneider Propellers (VSP). X-BOW vessels are characterised by the absence of a bulbous bow. Their bow slopes backwards above the water line which results in reduced resistance and improved wave slamming characteristics on the foreship. Designed for specific tasks in wind farms in the North Sea as well as in the Atlantic, the work boat with a length of 74 meters and a beam of 17 meters will be fitted with two electronically controlled VSP of the size 28R5 ECS/234-2. They have a propulsion power of 1,850 kW each and will be arranged in the stern. The two Voith Schneider Propellers will also be used for active roll stabilization as well as for dynamic positioning (DP class 2).

Damen Redelivers Seven Vessels to HamburgSüd

Photo: Damen

In October 2012 Damen Shiprepair Rotterdam (DSR) won the contract for installing the first Becker Twisted Fin on seven container vessels of the fleet of Hamburg (Germany) based liner shipping company Hamburg Süd. To complete the project in time, the vessels were routed in such a way that they could each be dry-docked for a maximum of 6 days every consecutive week. All ships have now been re-delivered. The first vessel starting the cycle, MV Santa Catharina, was expected the December 30, 2012. However, this vessel was operationally delayed, which reduced the available time with three days.

German Shipowner Invests in Fleet Rejuvenation

The 67 year old ship owner Dipl.-Ing. (naval architect) Captain Roelf Briese would not be Roelf Briese if he didn’t stick to his course, even in stormy weather.

Leer, Germany, not to far from the river Ems entry into the North Sea, with its Institute of Maritime Studies, is the origin of a maritime trade association in the field of logistic, shipping companies, shipping, shipbuilding, carrying business and handling. Thus the city of Leer has grown, after  the city of Hamburg, into the largest concentration of shipping companies according to the managed numbers of ships, with around 16 shipping companies operating more than 400 seagoing vessels  from here. By its seaport, the city was characterized by trade for centuries.

GL to Holds International Ship Stability Workshop

More than 70 experts from the international maritime industry met at Germanischer Lloyd headquarters to discuss the current status of the development and research in ship stability. The two day workshop dealt with the probabilistic assessment of intact stability, showed trends in progressive flooding prediction, presented new cognitions of investigations on severe stability incidents like the MV Estonia and informed about the simulation of parametric rolling. Surf-riding, broaching and capsizing in following/quartering seas, numerical prediction of intact stability as well as probabilistic approach to damage stability and survivability assessment plus intact capsize investigations rounded off the program of 28 presentations.
