Wisconsin Awards $5.3 Million in Harbor Maintenance Grants

A federal FASTLANE grant has been approved for S.S. Badger Ports & Harbor project impacting Manitowoc, Wis. and Ludington, Mich. A primer on how things get done. This is a story about two communities on the shores of Lake Michigan and the unique car ferry that connects them. The SS Badger provides a nautical “highway” across one of our nation’s major waterways, carrying passengers, oversized loads and trucks of nearly every kind. Essentially, the ferry provides a vital lifeline of commerce, tourism and economic growth between the cities of Manitowoc, Wis. and Ludington, Mich.

Fraser Shipyards Briefs Obey (D.-Wis.)

On Feb. 16, Fraser Shipyards Inc. President and COO Jim Korthals, briefed Rep. David Obey, D.-Wis. on how the shipyard will use the $2m the congressman secured for the City of Superior to assist with the shipyard’s continued upgrades and repairs to its facilities. The company will initiate the work as soon as funding is disbursed, ultimately employing an additional 15 to 20 skilled workers throughout the project. “This project will help ensure Fraser remains competitive, so it can continue to employ people long into the future,” said Obey. “This is a great example of private industry working cooperatively with government at every level, federal, state and local.” Obey and Sen.

Burger Boat Gets $2.9m Assist

Governor Jim Doyle announced a $2,880,128 project that will support improvements to the Burger Boat Company’s facility at the . The award is positioned to spur economic growth in the city of and the surrounding area. “The Burger Boat Company is a valued partner in ’s economy, and a valued part of ’s history,” Governor Doyle said. Burger Boat Company will receive $2,304,102 for the project from the state’s Harbor Assistance Program, and the company will provide the required 20 percent match, $576,026.
