Ports America is continuing its business growth strategy to increase its West Coast presence through additional investments, services and expansion of its terminal capacity. The latest transaction includes a significant expansion and 20-year lease extension of the Husky Terminal in Tacoma, Wash. International Transportation Service, Inc. (ITS), a joint venture between Ports America and "K" Line, negotiated an extension of its Husky lease with the Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA) through 2046. Ports America is an equity holder and service provider to Husky Terminal. Included in the lease extension is a planned expansion project of more than $141 million approved by the NWSA, which will enhance the terminal’s capacity and is expected to be completed by July 2018.

The Northwest Seaport Alliance, a marine cargo operating partnership of the ports of Seattle and Tacoma, announced that its managing members have approved $141 million worth of construction and cranes to dock two of the largest containerships simultaneously at Husky Terminal in the South Harbor. The actions also included a 20-year lease extension, allowing Husky Terminal and Stevedoring to operate the terminal until 2046. “This is a real historic moment for the alliance,” Port of Seattle Commission President John Creighton said during the meeting.

The 685-foot Liberian-flagged containership Westwood Robson is being held in port after significant safety violations were discovered by Port State Control officers from U.S. Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound during an inspection at the Husky Terminal in the Port of Tacoma, Thursday. The inspection revealed excessive oil in the bilge holding area, oil-soaked lagging present throughout machinery spaces and clogged oil drains, creating a significant risk of fire, the Coast Guard said. Mechanical issues included deteriorated fittings that contributed to oil and coolant leaks as well as inoperable oil purifiers. The vessel and crew must are required to stay in port until the deficiencies have been corrected to the satisfaction of Coast Guard inspectors and the Classification Society.

In an effort to protect Puget Sound air quality, the Evergreen Group has announced that all diesel-powered equipment at the Port of Tacoma's Pierce County Terminal is required to use ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) fuel. Evergreen's announcement came just months after the Port of Tacoma Commission directed that all diesel equipment at Port-operated facilities should use ULSD fuel. While the decision increases the operational costs for Evergreen, use of the more expensive fuel has tangible benefits for the environment and the community. This "greening of Evergreen" has been mandated by the career-long philosophy of Evergreen Group Chairman Dr. Y F Chang, who believes all shipowners have a responsibility to minimize the impact of their operations on the global environment - at any cost.

The Port of Tacoma celebrated its third major container terminal grand opening of 2005. For officials of Taiwan-based Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation, the Port and more than 200 guests, the event was highlighted by a traditional Lion Dance, meant to bestow good fortune at the new Olympic Container Terminal. The newly renovated, 54-acre (21.6-hectare) Olympic Container Terminal (OCT) is located on the Port's deep-water Sitcum Waterway, adjacent to the on-dock North Intermodal Yard and just a few miles from Interstate 5 and other major highways.
