Baxter Marine Group Acquires WheelHouse Technologies, Vessel Vanguard & SeaKits

Baxter Marine Group announced it has acquired Wheelhouse Technologies, VesselVanguard and SeaKits Brand.The combined companies support more than 3,000 commercial, military, charter and recreational watercraft worldwide. ICTSI Unveils Banana Transport Insurance Program

International Container Terminal Services (ICTSI) Ecuador has launched the first transport insurance program for banana trade.Contecon Guayaquil SA, the Ecuadorian subsidiary of ICTSI, will be providing banana-exporters with a comprehensive insurance program, increasing coverage for the transport. OceanWise Re-launches iCoast

OceanWise, the player in marine environmental data acquisition, data management, GIS and other services,  announced its involvement in the recent iCoast renovation project.The iCoast website, found at www.icoast.co.uk, is an open access web application providing users the ability to quickly explore activities and plan days out at the Dorset coast.A simple map interface allows users select and view activities at the Dorset coast. Activities appear on the map as a small icon which can be queried to find out more information and add to the kitbag for later. BIMCO Guidance For Charter Negotiations

BIMCO has re-launched one of its most enduringly popular publications – Check Before Fixing. Check Before Fixing is an indispensable tool used across the industry for daily chartering and shipping transactions. Since the first edition was issued more than 30 years ago, it has proved to be an invaluable checklist for negotiations, and there is already a waiting list for the most up to date version. Last revised in 2010, the new 2017 edition includes the most recent legal developments. The guidance reflects increasing regulatory requirements and includes current commercial practice and for the first time, it includes an important section on cyber security.

SATCOM Battle Heats Up

The evolution of satellite communication use at sea closely mirrors that of land-based communication trends: a never-ending quest for speed, reliability and lower costs. While it is foolhardy to select this or any other single technology as the one with the greatest impact on the maritime industry, a strong case could be made for satellite communication. Prior to the introduction of radio, maritime communication was generally limited to line-of-sight visual signaling during clear weather, plus noise-makers such as bells and foghorns. The advent of radio greatly reduced the isolation of ships during emergencies and was quickly responsible for saving thousands of lives. The first ship-to-shore, two-way radio conversation reportedly occurred in 1922, between Deal Beach, N.J., and the S.S.
