Texas Dredging Contract Awarded by DofD

US Department of Defense, Army, has awarded a contract to Inland Dredging Co. for dredging of the of the Neches River Channel in Jefferson and Orange Counties, Texas. Inland Dredging Co., LLC, Dyersburg, Tenn., was awarded a firm-fixed-price, non-option, non-multi-year contract of $12,747,180 for the dredging of approximately 3,537,000 cubic yards from the federal channel and approximately 80,000 cubic yards from the non-federal channel of the Neches River Channel in Jefferson and Orange Counties, Texas. Performance location will be Port Arthur, Texas with funding from fiscal 2013 Operations and Maintenance Army funds. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – Galveston District, Galveston, Texas is the contracting activity (W9126G-13-C-0042).

Panama City Dredging Project Underway

The Port of Panama City and the U. S. Corps of Engineers have begun a joint dredging project to deepen Panama City’s entrance channel and turning basin from 32 ft. to 36 ft. Inland Dredging Company of Dyersburg, Tennessee will begin work in the channel in January. The Panama City Port Authority is in the process of bidding the dredging work in the berthing areas. The entire project will cost approximately $8.5 million dollars and be completed by the end of May, 2003. The channel deepening is the first of a series of major improvements underway at the Port of Panama City.

Eastern Shipbuilding Group Delivers Integrity

Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. successfully delivered the Integrity, a 166 ft. 5 in. dismountable Cutter Suction Dredge, which they recently constructed for inland dredging company LLC of Dyersburg, Tennessee. The Integrity is a dismountable cutter suction dredge measuring 166.5 x 34.5 ft. x 7 ft. 10 in., which was designed by Vosta BV, Amsterdam, the Netherlands. It was built to Bureau Veritas standards and is currently being used for various U.S. Corp of Engineer projects.

Adani Adds Two New Dredgers to Its Fleet

India’s largest private multi-port operator Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) inaugurated two new 8,000m3 trailing suction hopper dredgers (TSHDs) on January 8. Both dredgers were built by Royal IHC in The Netherlands and recently arrived at Adani’s Hazira Port in Gujarat, India, after their maiden voyage through the Suez Canal. The vessels are the 11th and 12th dredgers supplied by Royal IHC to APSEZ and are among the largest in the Indian fleet of TSHDs. “[The new dredgers] will substantially increase our capacity for dredging.

Tug Newbuild Delivered to De Boer

On January 9, Damen Shipyards Hardinxveld delivered an ASD Tug 2310 SD (shallow draught), named Papillon, to De Boer Remorquage SARL, a subsidiary company of Dutch Dredging (Baggerbedrijf De Boer) and Iskes Towage & Salvage. Damen has customized the ASD for a 12-year contract with Grand Port Maritime de Guyane in the ports of Cayenne and Kourou in French Guiana. The tug’s primary function will be the assistance of vessels entering and leaving the ports. She can also provide emergency assistance, such as fire-fighting, survey activities and small transports.

Weeks Marine Takes Delivery of Hopper Dredge Magdalen

Weeks Marine’s new self-propelled hopper dredge, Magdalen, was delivered by Eastern Shipbuilding on December 22 following sea trials and regulatory inspections. The newbuild is one of the two newest, and among the largest hopper dredges in the U.S., and will bring formidable pumping power to offload beach quality sand or other materials for land reclamation. On December 28, the new dredger sailed from Eastern's Allanton facility in Panama City, Fla. on her maiden voyage to the East Coast.

Sen. Paul Proposes New Harbor Dredging Criteria

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) reintroduced the Harbor Equity Act on Monday, his office announced. This legislation modifies the existing criteria used by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to dredge small harbors. Currently, the Corps' prioritizes dredging solely for larger harbors that see 1 million or more tons in traffic per year - often forcing small community harbors to fund their own dredging or be forced to shut down operations. The Harbor Equity Act will drop the minimum tonnage requirements and prioritize smaller harbors for dredging rather than just larger, commercial harbors.

Rhine in Germany Reopens as Water Levels Recede

The river Rhine in Germany was reopened to shipping on Wednesday after a fall in water levels, the German inland navigation authority said. The river was closed to inland shipping at the beginning of the week after rain and melting snow raised water levels. High water means vessels do not have enough space to sail under bridges, but drier weather means water levels have dropped enough to enable navigation to resume, an official said. The Rhine is an important shipping route for commodities including minerals, coal and oil products such as heating oil, grains and animal feed.

Norfolk Dredging Awarded U.S. ACE Delaware River Contract

The US Department of Defense informs that Norfolk Dredging Co., Chesapeake, Virginia, was awarded an $11,787,279 firm-fixed-price contract for maintenance dredging of the inland waterway Delaware River to Chesapeake Bay, Delaware and Maryland. Work will be performed in Maryland with an estimated completion date of Feb. 10, 2015. Fiscal 2014 operations and maintenance (Army) funds in the amount of $11,787,279 are being obligated at award. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – Philadelphia District, Pennsylvania is the contracting activity (W912BU-14-C-0033).

New USACE Contract

Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company, LLC., was awarded on Sept. 28, 2009 a $8,126,971 firm-fixed-price contract for the maintenance dredging, Station 99+000 to Station 250+440, inland waterway, Delaware River to Chesapeake Bay, Delaware and Maryland.  Work is to be performed in Chesapeake City, Md., with an estimated completion date of Feb. 20, 2010. Nine bids were solicited with three bids received. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Philadelphia, Pa., is the contracting activity (W912BU-09-C-0058).  

Dynamic Positioning for Inland Vessels

RH Marine recently installed the Rhodium 4500 dynamic positioning (DP) and tracking system on Hakkers’ new flagship, Noordzee, an inland multipurpose vessel that can be used for lifting, dredging or pile driving. Hakkers is a specialist in the development, production and realization of excavation, dredging, construction, foundation, coastal and shoreline works. Its new vessel Noordzee required a system that could automatically hold position and maintain track with high accuracy on low speed.

Dredging Services in the US Market Research Report

IBISWorld report indicates that government & private funding is expected to boost revenue for the US dredging industry. A weak economy has made growth for dredgers slower than expected. Nevertheless, increased government and private-sector funding is expected to boost revenue for the industry over the next five years. While lacking in prominence, the Dredging Services industry is an essential part of the US economy. This is because two vital sectors of the US economy – maritime tourism and international trade – depend heavily on dredging services. Additionally, dredging services play an important role in restoring and preserving wetlands, coastlines and maritime habitats. As such, the industry benefits from public and private restoration projects.

Mansukh Mandavia Inspects Kolkata Port, IWAI Jetty

Indian Minister of State for Shipping, Mansukh Mandaviya inspected the facilities and ongoing projects at Kolkata Port Trust and GR Jetty of Inland Waterways Authority of India. Mandavia visited Netaji Subhas Dock at Kolkata Port Trust where he stressed upon the need for strengthening the Dry Dock facilities. He also inaugurated the renovated Birsa Munda Sarani and Sonapur Road of the Port, and  participated in the tree plantation activities organised by the Port Authorities. He later flagged off the state-of-the–art Seagoing Survey Launch (River Pearl-1) of KoPT.

Canal Corporation Awards Contract

New York State Canal Corporation announced that the contract for a new hydraulic cutter-head dredge has been awarded to Ellicott Dredges of Baltimore, Md. The acquisition of the new dredge is a part of the Canal Corporation's ongoing effort to upgrade its fleet and increase its dredging capacity, while complying with environmental regulations. The new dredge will be stationed in Utica, NY and will replace a 1927 DeLaVergne. The new dredge will have double the horsepower of existing dredge, which is aimed to provide less down-time for repairs and maintenance. Delivery is scheduled for May 24, 2006. The newest dredge in the Canal Corporation's fleet is currently a 1980 Ellicott based in Waterford, NY.

Bollinger Modifies Vessel For Deeper Dredging

Two Bollinger shipyards have teamed to increase the dredging depth of the Pine Bluff Sand and Gravel Co. dustpan dredge, Wallace Mcgeorge, from 62-ft. to 75-ft., enabling it to dredge at higher river stages and dispatch sooner on a falling river. In the process, Bollinger Quick Repair, Harvey, La., fabricated and installed 45-ton, 36-ft. by 20-ft., port and starboard sections to the horn of the dredge, increasing the vessel’s overall length from 252.5 feet to 288.5 ft. The shipyard then installed a new 46-ton, 40-ft. wide by 15-ft. by 30-ft. high, A-frame which it had pre-fabricated for the dredge. The A-frame, which more closely resembles an inverted “U”…

Damen Dredger Starts Something in Africa

The new Damen CSD250 dredger delivered to Nigeria has already started on making its own pond, eventually to become a canal. The CSD250 has started creating a canal, which will flow eventually in the Benin River, and through to the Atlantic Ocean. The canal is initiated by Ossiomo Investments, the owner of the industrial park. On the park a fertilizer plant will be constructed, amongst other petrochemical plants. A canal is to be dredged and an inland port  constructed to facilitate marine transport.

Dutch/Bangladesh JV Delivers Dredges

In late 2008 a joint venture was formed between the Netherlands based Vosta  LMG and the Bangladesh Karnafuly Shipyard to build three CSD450 cutter suction dredgers for the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority. At the same time construction was underway to an agreement that had been signed with the Bangladesh Water Development Board for two CSD650 cutter suction dredges under the same joint venture. The model numbers 450 and 650 designate the diameter in centimeters of the dredge’s internal discharge pipe. Both of these larger dredges were delivered in mid-year 2012.

Eastern’s original shipyard was established in 1976 for the purpose of constructing commercial fishing boats for the company’s founder and President, Brian R. D’Isernia. By 1980, 26 commercial fishing vessels had been constructed and delivered.
