The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced Beth Rooney has been named Director of the Port Department, taking over for Sam Ruda who is departing to return to the West Coast.A maritime industry veteran, Rooney will assume the role on May 2 following three years as the ports Deputy Director and more than three decades of experience. She has been with the Port Department since 1993.Together, Ruda and Rooney have led the East Coast’s busiest and largest seaport, and third in the nation behind the Port of Los Angeles and Port of Long Beach.

Metrans AS, a subsidiary of terminal operator Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA), has ordered ten Vectron MS locomotives from Siemens Mobility Czech Republic.The locomotives will be built at Siemens Mobility’s factory in Munich-Allach, and deliveries are scheduled from the end of 2019 until spring 2020. P&O Ferrymasters announced the launch of new intermodal services from the Turkish ports of Pendik, Ambarli and Mersin to the Free Port of Trieste in Italy, with onward connections to its European intermodal network.The European provider of tailor-made transportation, logistics and supply chain solutions said in a press release that the new services – with departures six times a week in both directions – will connect with rail links from the port of Trieste to P&O Ferries’ continental hubs at Rotterdam and Zeebrugge, giving highly competitive transit times of less than a week between Turkey and Europe’s principal logistics hubs.Wim Blomme…

Contship Italia Group has been pulling all the stops to increase its intermodal offering during the past months.Italy’s leading service provider for integrated global supply chains said that its Rail Hub Milano (RHM) and its gateway ports La Spezia and Ravenna serve as backbone of the Group’s growing intermodal network.La Spezia is geographically located within a range of 320 km from the key economic regions in Italy, accounting for over 47% of the total Italian GDP. RHM is located in Melzo, just outside the city of Milan at the heart of consumer and industrial regions. Ravenna is the natural gateway for East Med flows exchanged via the Adriatic Sea, the Italian container terminal operator said.This year has seen numerous service additions from RHM to various locations across Europe.

Traffic flows between the Belgian port of Antwerp and the hinterland market in Hungary and Austria are increasing continuously. In order to meet the growing demand, the Antwerp Port Authority is promoting the expansion of hinterland connections, especially by rail.Two regular rail connections to Hungary have been established since 2015 and rail services to Austria have been expanded from one to currently three.At a port event held near Vienna on 27 September, leading representatives of the Antwerp port industry provided information on the further development of these transports with Austria and Hungary. 200 guests from both countries followed the invitation of the Antwerp Port Authority.Hungary and Austria are an attractive but highly competitive market for the northern…

European Cargo Logistics (ECL), an associated company of Lübecker Hafen-Gesellschaft mbH (LHG), and DSV Road AB, a part of DSV – Global Transport and Logistics, are now reaching another spot on the map, Zajeci in the South Moravian Region of the Czech Republic. This is now the most easterly destination in the ECL network. For DSV this is not a new destination, but it is a way to handle transports to eastern Europe in a more environmentally friendly way. “We do always look at alternatives for reducing the environmental impact, and this intermodal solution will also help in the current market situation with high demand for transports and limited capacity in some areas due to lack of drivers”, says Christian Gerdtsson, Deputy MD for DSV Road AB.

South Carolina Ports Authority announced plans to enhance international intermodal rail service between the Port of Charleston and the Charlotte Regional Intermodal Facility at the Charlotte Douglass International Airport. Effective March 12, the new two-day Norfolk Southern service will operate five days per week connecting Charleston and Charlotte using existing dedicated intermodal trains. Containers moving between Charleston and Charlotte will ride an existing Norfolk Southern overnight intermodal train between Charleston and Spartanburg, where they will connect to intermodal train service between Spartanburg and Charlotte. “This…

French container shipping company CMA CGM has upgraded its services in Morocco, offering improved connections for the country’s citrus and vegetable exports to key markets including Russia, France, Spainand the UK. Via its subsidiary OPDR, the group said it had re-configured its operations to provide the Moroccan fresh produce export trade with five maritime services, offering new transport links to Russia, northern Europe, North America, the Middle East and Africa. The port of Agadir is the heart of Moroccan citrus fruit and vegetable production, and will thus be served with three weekly calls serving northern Europe and Russia, via the Dunkrus, Ciss and Agax services.

The Port of Jacksonville (JAXPORT) has welcomed the 4,400 teu AS Mariana, the first ship in Maersk Line’s new weekly service to Asia through at the port’s Blount Island Marine Terminal. JAXPORT has officially announced the addition of the world’s No. 1 container shipping company to the growing number of global carriers with regular container cargo service through Jacksonville. This addition service means that nine of the world’s top 10 global container carriers now offer their customers the opportunity to move containers into and out of Northeast Florida. “What better way to illustrate JAXPORT’s increasingly visible role in international trade than to welcome the world’s largest container line,” said JAXPORT Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer Roy Schleicher.

Ingram Barge Company sees two kinds of green in their newest venture on the inland rivers. In late March, the Paducah-McCracken County Riverport Authority and Ingram Barge Company announced plans to assess the viability of Intermodal River Transportation, utilizing the largest flat-top crane in North America and Ingram’s towboats and barges. On March 27th, that plan came to life as the Paducah Riverport Authority’s 200-ton crane lifted 54 empty containers and stacked them neatly on an Ingram-owned barge. An Ingram towboat then transported the container laden barge to the port of St. Louis and then back to Paducah for unloading. The highly successful trial run tested the logistics of moving the intermodal containers via barge in the nation’s heartland.

Cargo and passenger handling rise by 3%. Handling in the Port of Kiel continued to grow in the first half of the year. A total of 3.24 million tons of cargo were handled in the first six months of 2014 which is an increase of 3% over the same period of last year. In the passenger sector, about 900,000 ferry and cruise ship passengers – a rise of 3.1% - embarked or disembarked. Horizon Lines announced that it will expand its Gulf service to offer shippers a Tuesday sailing every other week from Jacksonville to San Juan. Adding the Jacksonville call also creates a high-speed, over-the-weekend marine option through Houston for cargo bound for southeastern destinations along the Eastern Seaboard. The company's weekly Thursday service departing Jacksonville for Puerto Rico remains unchanged. Canadian Pacific Railway and CP Ships have reached a long-term agreement that will see CPR continue as the shipping company's exclusive Montreal Gateway rail carrier well into the future. The two companies have extended their existing agreement, originally due to run until 2004, for another 10 years to 2014. The new agreement secures CPR's position as the leading rail service provider in the Port of Montreal, handling the majority of the port's containerized rail traffic. CPR and CP Ships had agreed in principle to the terms of the agreement before their recent spin-off from Canadian Pacific Limited."This long-term partnership preserves CPR's strong and secure position in one of North America's busiest container ports," said Rob Ritchie, CPR's President and CEO.

Norfolk Southern (NYSE: NSC) has loaded the largest volume cargo in the history of its Pier 6 coal transloading facility at Lamberts Point in Norfolk. Early yesterday morning, Norfolk Southern finished loading 159,941.45 net tons (145,097.931 metric tons) of metallurgical coal into the M/V Cape Dover, destined for China. That quantity can be used to make about 207,000 tons of steel – enough to build 230,000 automobiles. The coal was shipped by Xcoal Energy & Resources in conjunction with CONSOL Energy, from mining operations in Virginia, in 1,561 railroad coal cars. T. Parker Host was the ship agent/broker. Norfolk Southern employees loaded the 951-foot vessel in fewer than 48 hours in order to accommodate a tight schedule for the receiver.
