For Ship Recycling, Grieg (Goes) Green

In May 2014 National Geographic wrote an in-depth article on shipbreaking operations in Bangladesh where they listed shipbreaking as one of the deadliest professions in the world. The images from these shipyards are well circulated among professionals in the shipping industry. Individuals without personal protective equipment cutting and grinding into a ship that was haphazardly beached and torn asunder by unskilled laborers. Pollution swirl in the nearby tidal area and soot belches into the air. Large sections of ships come careening off endless rows of vessels that litter the beach.

Carnival Unveils Miami Fleet Operations Center

Carnival Cruise Line has previewed its new Fleet Operations Center (FOC) in Miami, the largest and most advanced in the cruise industry. The 35,000-square-foot facility is custom-designed for hands-on, around-the-clock monitoring and support of the line's 26 cruise ships. The Carnival Cruise Line FOC is the first facility of its kind in South Florida and features a state-of-the-art tracking and data-analysis platform that enables real-time information sharing between Carnival ships and specialized shoreside teams designed to support fleet operations. It was unveiled during a ribbon cutting ceremony and interactive demonstration of its most innovative new high-tech features, which is anchored by a 74-foot-long video wall composed of 57 LED screens.

Thome Group Appoints New CEO

The Thome Group has announced the appointment of a new Chief Executive Officer, Olav Magnus Nortun, who will take up the position on 1st April, 2015. Mr Nortun, a Norwegian national, brings with him vast experience in the maritime industry, especially in the areas of strategic development and governance of production, knowledge management and systems related to ship classification. He has worked with DNV GL for many years in different locations around the world, culminating in his most recent role as Executive Vice President of its Classification Division.

Babcock to Support Aircraft Carrier Engineering

Babcock has been awarded a 12-month contract to assist in designing the engineering support solution for the Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers. Under the £1.17 million contract the U.K. Ministry of Defense (MoD), Babcock and BAE Systems will work together to develop the optimum, fit-for-purpose engineering support solution for the new aircraft carriers, as part of the wider Support Development Phase. Babcock and BAE Systems will be involved in four support development phase work-streams – Class Management, Design Management, Maintenance Management and Information Knowledge Management. Under these work-streams Babcock and BAE Systems will design technical services and maintenance solutions to ensure the carriers are available for their operational requirements.

Schlumberger Releases 2014 Software Platforms

Schlumberger has released the 2014 versions of its industry leading software platforms. The Petrel* E&P software platform, Techlog* wellbore software platform, Studio* E&P knowledge environment and Ocean* software development framework enhance multidisciplinary integration, collaboration and productivity. “E&P investment decisions are increasingly driven by digital models that enable rich analysis of physical data through the application of workflows reflecting industry best practices,” said Uwem Ukpong, president, Schlumberger Information Solutions. Petrel 2014 features a new ribbon-based interface design configured in a logical, workflow-driven layout to boost productivity. Key tools are presented in context, enabling a more focused user environment.

Vice Adm. William Hilarides, the commander of the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), recently spoke to a small group of reporters about his vision for NAVSEA and the challenges and opportunities he faces. A decline in the number of skilled Sailors able to conduct repairs onboard their ships; an aging civilian workforce; balancing capability with affordability and achieving commonality are priority issues for Hilarides and his staff. To reduce the total lifecycle cost of its ships, the Navy eliminated some sea duty positions for Sailors on ships in the late 1990s.

China's Vast Warehouse Sector Comes Under Scrutiny

Shaken by a fraud investigation into metal financing in the world's seventh-busiest port, banks and trading houses have been made painfully aware of the risks they face storing commodities in China's sprawling warehouse sector. The probe at Qingdao port centres around a private metals trading firm suspected of duplicating warehouse certificates in order to use a metal cargo multiple times to raise financing. Some banks have asked clients to shift metal, used as collateral for loans, to more regulated London Metal Exchange (LME) warehouses outside China or those owned and operated by a single warehouse firm to limit their exposure. "The banks still haven't looked under the hood," said an executive at a bank involved in commodity financing in China, referring to China's warehousing sector.

The Executive Control Board of the National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP) has selected four major research and development projects for award, as part of the program's continuing mission to reduce costs associated with U. S. shipbuilding and ship repair. Objective: Expanding upon the successfully completed Remote Climbing Robot and the current Mobile Robotic Manufacturing System, the objective of this project is to develop and demonstrate a High Mobility Manufacturing Robot capable of operating in ship compartments. Siemens Wins Prestigious Maersk 'Triple-E' Order

The Siemens Drive Technologies Division won a contract from Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) to implement eco-friendly propulsion and power generation system in containerships which will comprehensively reduce transit costs and provide in achieving the best operational CO2 Index in accordance with the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Apart from administering shaft generator motors and a power generation system, Siemens will also furnish the company with expertise in power management and Waste Heat Recovery Control (WHR). This approach will substantially contribute in depreciating the emission of significant air pollutants. Headquartered in Seoul, South Korea, Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) is the second largest shipbuilder in the world.

Seither Tapped to Lead SNAME

The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers named Erik Seither as its next Executive Director of the Society, according to a press release posted on the organization’s website. Seither will become the 12th person to serve in the capacity since the organization’s founding in 1893. He will assume the helm of SNAME HQ on July 6, succeeding Phil Kimball, who has held the position since 1998. “I am thrilled to be selected to work with an organization of such distinguished and professional people,” Seither said.

Pollution Prevention Assignments

SMIT Salvage came to the rescue of Zhen Hua 010 when it grounded off of carrying five large ship-to-shore cranes. Ironically, this ship is featured prominently in another feature in this edition of MarineNews, coincidentally in Don Sutherland’s report of large crane deliveries to the . SMIT Salvage has a role in removing threats to the marine environment. For example, during the second quarter work began on the recovery of oily residues from the wreck of the Haven. Shell Deepwater Services Implements HDI

Shell Deepwater Services, a division of Shell International Exploration and Production Inc., has contracted with NHDS for the delivery of an HDI-based knowledge management solution for communicating high volumes of vital information over high- and low-bandwidth networks found on offshore drilling rigs. After a 16-month trial period, Shell is formally installing the software on its deepwater rigs around the globe. The patented HDI (High Definition Information(TM)) technology enables offshore rigs to send and receive information rapidly and reliably, perform complex calculations, and display daily drilling data (including actual and projected costs, as well as depth and trouble time), lessons learned, best practices, and health and safety alerts.

Trident Warrior ’07 Brings New Technology to the Fleet

Naval Network Warfare Command (NETWARCOM) is hosting Trident Warrior 2007, the annual FORCEnet sea trial event, from March 16 through March 30, to improve communication and speed vital information to warfighters. During the exercise, U.S. naval forces are teaming with DoD and civilian agencies to test new technologies that will improve communication and situational awareness across a multinational experiment. Military units from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and France are also taking part in Trident Warrior. Some participants are actually attending the exercise here while others are linked virtually, using the various technologies being tested in a network-centric environment.
