Allseas Makes Progress on Santos’ Barossa Gas Export Pipeline in Australia

Offshore installation contractor Allseas has made progress on the installation of the pipeline for Santos’ Barossa Gas Export Pipeline (GEP) project offshore Australia.Allseas’ Audacia pipelay vessel has installed her largest ever PLET in S-mode, concluding several years of in-house engineering, fabrication and testing, the Swiss-based contractor said.Due to the weight of the pipeline end termination structure, Allseas’ production crew had to install it separately to the connector head.Audacia vessels is being supported with four other vessels - Fortitude…

DSME to Build Six Second-generation Arc7 LNG Carriers

South Korean shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) has signed shipbuilding contracts with Russia's Sovcomflot and Japan's Mitsui O.S.K. Lines for the construction of six icebreaking Arc7 liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers based on a newly developed design.The new ships will be the second generation of vessels engineered to transport LNG from the Russian Arctic, with special emphasis on year-round operation in the eastern sector of the Northern Sea Route.DSME…

RINA Group Widens Gas Sector Services

International classification, certification and engineering group RINA said it has widened its services to the global gas industry. While its traditional classification society arm RINA Services has recently approved a new Compressed Natural Gas carrier to aid the exploitation of marginal fields, the groups’ engineering arm, D’Appolonia, is delivering geotechnical, social and environmental services to the Mozambique LNG development. The gas market and technology are constantly changing, and RINA Services and D’Appolonia lead those changes, according to the group. The first offshore FSRU, the first FLNG project, the first marine CNG ship and the longest offshore pipeline were all delivered with RINA expertise and assistance.

DSME Building 5 Icebreaking LNGCs for Yamal

Korean shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) is building five large Arctic Liquefied Natural Gas Carriers (LNGCs), for which it has LNG ordered membrane containment systems from designer GTT.   These five ARC 7 LNGCs for Yamal Trade are expected to be delivered between 2017 and 2019 and will be built with the NO96-GW technology, which allows an optimized boil-off rate of LNG cargo.   GTT said it recorded 10 similar orders for icebreaking LNGCs in 2014.    Philippe Berterottière, Chairman and CEO of GTT commented, "The harsh Arctic conditions make transporting natural gas a huge challenge. GTT is very proud that membrane containment solutions were chosen for these new generation vessels."

LNG on the Rise

As the world’s economies search for sustainable, reliable, renewable energy sources, they are also more closely examining a range of fossil fuels to find the cleanest, least harmful of those to cut carbon emissions and improve air quality in the process. In the drive to cut carbon emissions, interest in liquefied natural gas (LNG) is growing. LNG is being looked at not only as fuel for generating electricity and heat, but also as a fuel for powering marine vessels, road vehicles and trains. With the recent development of abundant shale gas deposits in the United States, the LNG market is really set to take off. The common method for transporting natural gas worldwide is to liquefy it so it takes up less volume and can be transported in specialized LNG carrier vessels.

LPG Tanker Repaired, Modernized and Converted

The 977-ft. LPG tanker Matthew was docked on August 17 into dry dock Elbe 17 of Blohm + Voss Repair GmbH to be repaired, modernized and converted in 33 days. The ship will be berthed at the quay for another 12 days so that tests can be carried out and the equipment set to work in cooperation with the crew, which stayed on board during the docking period. The Matthew, a large order for the traditional Hamburg shipyard, has hundreds of people working around the clock, seven days a week so as to hand over the ship to Cabot LNG Corp as scheduled.

The ship was berthed at the quay for an additional 12 days so that tests could be carried out and the equipment set to work in cooperation with the crew, which stayed on board during the docking period. The Matthew, a large order for the traditional Hamburg shipyard, had hundreds of people working around the clock, seven days a week to ensure the delivery to Cabot LNG Corp. went off as scheduled. The tanker is in service on the route from Trinidad to Boston transporting natural gas, which is taken on board in liquefied form at a temperature of -162°C.

Åsheim Takes Helm of HÖEGH Fleet

Yngvil Åsheim has been named fleet manager in HFS responsible for the management of Leif Höegh & Co and HUAL's car carrier fleet. She came to HFS from Det norske Veritas (DNV) in 2002, where she was manager of DNV's Machinery Ship in Operation division. Åsheim has a degree (Master of Science) in mechanical engineering from the Norwegian Institute of Technology, NTH (NTNU) and has further education from management programmes under DNV's direction and from IMD in Switzerland. She started as a trainee at DNV in 1993. HFS is a management company responsible for the technical management and crewing of vessels owned by Leif Höegh & Co (LHC), comprising 22 car carriers, four LNG carriers, 10 specialised open hatch carriers and two large bulk carriers.

GPA Design For CNG Carrier

Guido Perla & Associates, Inc. (GPA) is providing the design to Sea NG Corp. located in Calgary, Canada, for two additional versions of the Coselle Compressed Natural Gas CNG carrier, based on a similar design which was approved by ABS in September 2006 for construction and will primarily be engaged on international voyages. “CNG carriers are a cost effective, reliable and safe alternative to the traditional ways of transporting natural gas via subsea pipelines or Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) carriers,” said Dan Koch, Vice President of Engineering. “When circumstances allow it, pipelines provide the best option for transporting gas over short distances, while Liquefied Natural Gas carriers offer various advantages for large quantities of natural gas to be transported over long distances.
