Newfoundland and Labrador Get Marine Navigation System

With the help of a small Canadian technology company, the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) has installed the first fully lit marine navigation system in the world. Carmanah Technologies Inc. of Victoria, B.C., has invented a small, powerful, lightweight - and, most importantly, inexpensive - solar-powered marine light that completes the CCG’s quest to build a low-cost lighted navigation buoy that runs for five years with no maintenance. USACE and USCG collaborate to make inland waterways safer. The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), supported by Alion Science and Technology (Alion), has put forth considerable effort during the last two years to further extend the capabilities of the existing Automatic Identification System (AIS) network to improve the safety and efficiency of navigation along the inland rivers. The USACE works with the United States Coast Guard (USCG) and other agencies and stakeholders to operate and maintain the nation’s Marine Transportation System (MTS).

Transas Moves Towards Auto Integrated Navigation

With the Navi-Sailor 2400 ECDIS becoming the world's first type approved ECDIS, the company's latest development — Navi-Sailor 2500 — goes even further in the automation of full bridge navigation. Navi-Sailor 2500 is equipped with a number of innovative functions that bring this product to the summit of modern shipping electronics. In addition to the vector charts of S-57 ver.3 format and raster ARCS and NDI/BSB, the new system can incorporate Seafarer raster charts produced by the Australian Hydrographic Office. The enhanced User Chart Editor now offers as many as 15 colors for easier identification and definition. MISHA to Install DESMI BWMS Fleet-wide

Danish firm DESMI Ocean Guard A/S said it has finalized a contract to supply CompactClean ballast water management systems (BWMS) to the entire fleet of Turkish ship owner MISHA Shipping. The contract includes delivery of 10 CompactClean BWMS in sizes from 340 to 750 m3/h, with the first system to be delivered later in 2018 for the m/v Mohican currently under construction. MISHA Shipping is a privately held company with both shipping and shipyard activities. Its vessels are shallow-draft dry cargo vessels primarily designed for operations in Russian inland waters…

Canada Releases Tanker Safety System Report

The Government of Canada has released the second report of the independent Tanker Safety Expert Panel, “A Review of Canada’s Ship-source Spill Preparedness and Response: Setting the Course for the Future, Phase II – Requirements for the Arctic and for Hazardous and Noxious Substances Nationally”, as part of the government’s efforts to continue strengthening Canada’s tanker safety system. The panel’s report concludes there are opportunities to enhance Canada’s prevention, preparedness and response requirements to better protect the public and the environment. There are recommendations for the Arctic, for hazardous and noxious substances and a recommendation on the management of marine casualty incidents.

Sonardyne Ranger 2 Chosen for Russian Salvage Vessels

Sonardyne’s Ranger 2 Pro will be installed on new build MPSVs, like the one modelled above, for complex underwater positioning and DP station keeping operations.

Sonardyne International Ltd.’s Ranger 2 acoustic positioning technology has been selected by marine navigation systems group, Transas, for use on two new build ice-class multipurpose salvage vessels (MPSVs, the project is developed by Marine Engineering Bureau) commissioned by the Russian Ministry of Transport. The vessels are currently under construction at Nordic Yards in Germany and will each be fitted with dual Ranger 2 Pro systems, the highest specification available, to support complex underwater positioning and critical DP station keeping tasks.

Tug Safety Training Offered at Port of Milford Haven

A powerful virtual-reality ship simulation system, operated by the Port of Milford Haven is running courses to train tug boat operators from across Britain. The Navigation Suite, based at Milford Waterfront, creates highly realistic computer-generated versions of any port in the world, giving trainees the opportunity to take the controls of any vessel, including tugboats, to practice scenarios. Tug skippers from Williams Marine Services and Teignmouth Harbor Commission spent two days undertaking theory based safety training and working on simulated ‘as real’ scenarios within the port.

Seacor Announces JV with Cosco Shipping Affiliates

Offshore services vessel operator SEACOR Marine Holdings Inc. said it has formed a jointly owned company with affiliates of the world’s largest ship owner, COSCO Shipping Group. The Marshall Islands company, SEACOSCO Offshore LLC, entered into contracts for the purchase of eight Rolls-Royce designed new construction platform supply vessels (PSV) from COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Guangdong) Co., Ltd. Six of the PSVs are of UT 771WP design (4,400 tons deadweight), and two are of UT 771CD design (3,800 tons deadweight).

Northrop Grumman Awarded Contract for UK Aircraft Carriers

LONDON, March 29, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Northrop Grumman Corporation's (NYSE: NOC) Sperry Marine business unit has signed a full production contract for the Integrated Navigation Bridge System (INBS) for the U.K. Ministry of Defence's (MoD) Queen Elizabeth Class (QEC) Aircraft Carrier Programme. The company also signed a design phase contract for the Navigation Lights, Shapes and Sounds (NLSS). Terms of the contracts were not disclosed. Northrop Grumman Sperry Marine will build and deliver the complete INBS, including electronic chart display and information system (ECDIS-N (U.K.)) for the new aircraft carriers. The system will include navigation planning, electronic charts and radar displays, as well as a comprehensive set of sensors and software.

Northrop Grumman Wins Brazilian Navy Deal

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) won a contract from the Brazilian Navy to upgrade the primary navigation systems on its combat ships with new-generation state-of-the-art inertial navigation systems. The inertial-navigation-system equipment will be supplied by Northrop Grumman’s Sperry Marine business unit. The system, based on Sperry Marine’s ring-laser gyro technology, is designed to provide high-accuracy position data and precise attitude, velocity and heading inputs for the ship’s navigation and fire-control systems. The initial $2.1 million firm fixed price contract is the first phase of a multi-annual acquisition program to replace the installed Sperry Marine MK29 military gyrocompass systems.

NG Supplies Radar Systems for U.S. Navy Subs

Northrop Grumman Corporation’s (NYSE: NOC) Sperry Marine business unit has been awarded a contract to supply navigation radar systems for eight new U.S. Navy nuclear attack submarines. The firm, fixed-price contract, valued at $20.9m, was awarded to Sperry Marine by Naval Sea Systems Command, Washington, D.C. The contract calls for Sperry Marine to produce and deliver eight AN/BPS-16(v)5 radar sets to be installed on eight Virginia-class Block III submarines. The scope of work will include manufacturing, fabrication, assembly and testing. The AN/BPS-16(v)5 is an advanced submarine navigation radar and electronic navigation system, which provides naval electronic chart display and information system (ECDIS-N) capability running on Sperry Marine’s Voyage Management System (VMS) software.

Northrop Grumman Earns Suez Canal Contract

Northrop Grumman to Supply Marine Navigation Equipment for Suez Canal Authority. Northrop Grumman Corporation's Sperry Marine business unit has won orders to supply navigation equipment to the Suez Canal Authority for tugboats and other assorted workboats. The orders include radar upgrades for 10 boats, and complete integrated bridge systems (IBS) for four new builds. The IBS is based on Northrop Grumman's VisionMaster FT navigation technology with TotalWatch multifunction workstations, which include electronic chart display and information systems (ECDIS), radars, conning displays and interfaces with positioning, heading, speed and depth sensors. The orders were won through Radio Holland Egypt (RHE), Northrop Grumman's sales and service representative in Egypt.

Sperry Marine Systems for Megayacht

Northrop Grumman Corporation’s (NYSE: NOC) Sperry Marine business unit is supplying a complete suite of electronic navigation systems for a new megayacht being constructed in Italy. The 142-foot (43-meter) motoryacht, which is being built for a private owner at the Baglietto Shipyard in La Spezia, will be equipped with an integrated bridge system (IBS) based on Sperry Marine’s new-generation VisionMaster FT™ technology. The scope of supply will include X- and S-band radars, electronic chart display and information system (ECDIS), TotalWatch™ multi-function workstation, gyrocompass, autopilot, steering system and other navigation sensors.

NG Training Packages for NROTC

Naval Reserve Officer Training Candidate (NROTC) students at college campuses in San Diego have become the first to use an advanced navigation training package supplied by Northrop Grumman Corporation’s (NYSE: NOC) Sperry Marine business unit. The computerized learning DVDs contain 16 interactive courseware (ICW) training lessons on the use and operation of Sperry Marine’s Voyage Management System (VMS) ship navigation software. They are being used in the navigation training curriculum for NROTC students at the University of San Diego and other greater San Diego college campuses. “The eLearning courseware will give the NROTC students an opportunity to become familiar with the standard electronic navigation system used throughout the U.S. Navy surface and submarine fleets.
