The innocent-looking water taxis at Universal Orlando Resort are actually hard-working craft hiding behind their pretty wood finishes, running all day, every day of the year. Nearly constant use has been no problem for the Yanmar 4JH5E diesels powering four of the taxis, two of which have logged more than 12,000 hours each. A new boat using the dependable Yanmar 54 hp engine is also under construction, all supplied by Mastry Engine Center. Yanmar Accelerated Endurance Testing

Recognized nationwide for his fishing expertise, Capt. Dave Mistretta has spent more than 30 years as a big game saltwater guide in Indian Rocks Beach, Florida. His Dorado 40, Jaws Too, employs a 530 hp Yanmar 6CX-530 engine supplied by Mastry Engine Center. As one of the first to try out one of these engines, Mistretta easily logged over 2,200 hours of operation in just two years. When most boaters put an average of 100-200 hours a year on their engine, it can be hard to gather enough data to quickly determine its level of reliability.

Yanmar: Single-minded Power

The age-old argument among mariners concerning twin-engine versus single-screw boats has taken a new twist. Recent results comparing a single-engine Yanmar 6LP-series diesel sterndrive to twin gas outboards gave the diesel engine advantages in nearly every category. Producing 300 crankshaft hp at 3,800 rpm, the 6-cylinder, 6LP-STZE is one of Yanmar Diesel's most popular engines among boatbuilders. Its light weight and small footprint have made it the choice for many gas-to-diesel and diesel-to-diesel repowering projects as well. Equipped with a Mercruiser Bravo Three sterndrive, the combination weighs only 1,100 pounds and, on a 31-ft. open console fishing boat, burns less than 11 gph at nearly 35 mph. That's over three miles per gallon.
