Trafag Highlights the NAT 8252 Industrial Pressure Transmitter

© Trafag

Trafag, a manufacturer of measurement devices, highlights the NAT 8252 Industrial Pressure Transmitter, designed to meet the demands of industrial monitoring and control systems.Engineered with Trafag’s thin-film-on-steel sensing technology, the NAT 8252 ensures stable and precise pressure measurement over time, even in harsh environments. Its long-term stability reduces the need for recalibration, lowering operational costs and maintenance burdens. Its measuring range, from 0 to 700 bar (0 to 10…

The Executive Control Board of the National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP) selected 13 panel projects for award as part of the program's mission to reduce costs and expand capability for U.S. shipbuilding and ship repair. These new projects, valued at over $2.55M in government funding, were among those proposed in response to the Panel Project Solicitation issued in June 2024. Abbreviated descriptions follow; prime contractors are listed first and noted in bold text:Laser…

Digital Feature Extraction with PropCad Premium 2018

A new utility automates feature extraction from 3D CAD data.Marine propellers can last a long time – it is not uncommon to find a vessel running on its original set of propellers. Sometimes, these propellers even outlive the companies that produced them. For example, some large volume propeller manufacturers have permanently closed their doors and patterns, molds, and design data have been scattered to unknown corners of the globe. It’s fair to say that while the propeller manufacturing industry has seen growth…

Grain Deliveries to China Hit Snag: North P&I Club

Example of a DDGS color chart from the ‘Guide to Distiller’s Dried Grains with Solubles (DDGS)’ issued by the United States Grains Council. (Source: http://www.nepia.com/our-services/loss-prevention/signals-online/cargo/ddgs-to-china/ddgs-to-china-be-aware-and-be-prepared/)

A number of claims and disputes have arisen where cargoes of Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles (DDGS) originating from the United States have been rejected by Chinese receivers. The cargoes were rejected on the basis of color. If the color of the DDGS is dark, the receiver may look to reject it. Incidents of this type were first reported in October 2015 but they continue to occur and it is apparent that a number of DDGS shipments have been affected. DDGS is used as animal feed and is a by-product of ethanol production.

Renewable Energy: Schottel Tidal Turbines Ready For Use

Photos courtesy of Schottel

In the last months Schottel  successfully tested its hydrokinetic turbines in Strangford Lough, Northern Ireland. The full-scale tests included 260 operating hours under realistic conditions. The result: One turbine with a rotor diameter of four meters generates 50 kW per second at a rated water velocity of 2.75 meters per second. 10 hours of operation provide enough electricity to supply an average household for a month. The Strangford Narrows in Northern Ireland is a strait between the enclosed Strangford Lough and the Irish Sea with strong tidal currents.

Knowledge is Power

Tim Angerame

World crude production may rise and fall, but the historical trend shows a steady increase in the price of a barrel of oil, and with it, the price of a ton of fuel. Add the demands of shareholders and charterers to increase operational efficiency and profitability, as well as increasing international pressure to reduce fuel consumption and associated greenhouse gas emissions. It is no wonder that ship owners have seen a steady rise, as well, in the availability of technologies — from ship design to propulsion and HVAC systems to hull coatings — that are purported to reduce fuel consumption.

Navigation System for Sting Ray Torpedo

Northrop Grumman Corporation's LN-200 inertial measurement devices will be used to increase the capabilities of the U.K. Ministry of Defence's Sting Ray torpedo. Under a 10-year contract awarded recently by BAE SYSTEMS' Underwater Systems Division, Northrop Grumman's Navigation Systems Division will provide LN-200s for the torpedo, which is being modified to defeat the dual threats of both fast, deep diving, double-hulled submarines operating in the ocean and quiet conventional submarines in coastal waters. "The LN-200 provides a compact, low-power and low-radiated noise inertial measurement unit that fulfils the unique environmental and low maintenance needs of the Sting Ray torpedo," said Ross Carr, LN-200 program manager at Northrop Grumman.
