North Vancouver, BC — Jonathan Whitworth, Seaspan CEO, announced today that it has signed agreements with both the Canadian Merchant Service Guild (the Guild) and International Longshore Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 400 to enter into binding arbitration/mediation. Following extensive discussions with the Honourable Kellie Leitch, Minister of Labour and Minister of the Status of Women, Seaspan and both unions have agreed to allow the Federal Government to appoint an arbitrator who will run the process and be responsible for setting the terms of reference. Once the arbitration is complete, the outcome is binding and cannot be challenged by Seaspan or its unions.

Sunday, March 30, during the night, M/T Glenda Meryl (jointly owned by d'Amico and Glencore and managed by Ishima ship management) rescued all the American crew of the stricken sailing yacht Even Star. The crew had taken to the ship's liferaft, abandoning the yacht which was in danger of sinking after a fire on board. The Glenda Meryl was sailing towards Panama when the USCG asked the vessel's master to take part in the salvage operation. The three crewmen from the yacht are now safely onboard the tanker Glenda Meryl and they will be disembarked at the next port. Capt.

International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) president Paddy Crumlin has met with key stakeholders in Auckland, New Zealand, about the ongoing campaign to secure NZD30 million in unpaid wages for fishers in the region. The ITF has contributed to Slave Free Seas’ campaign to claim outstanding wages in the vicinity of NZD30 million through the New Zealand courts. Crumlin met with senior union representatives from Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea, the Slave Free Seas advocacy group and the Merchant Service Guild as part of the Regional Maritime Federation meeting.

UK based ECDIS training and consultancy company ECDIS Ltd are celebrating over two years award of the Honourable Company of Master Mariners (HCMM) sponsored ECDIS prize. The prize is awarded to the best ECDIS student of the month and is eligible to all those undertaking a generic IMO 1.27 ECDIS training course with ECDIS Ltd. In recognition of their success, the worthy recipient receives an elegant gift and a plaque with the student’s name on it adorns the ‘Ship’s Wheel’ at ECDIS Ltd’s facility.

Zenith Maritime announced that Capt. David Yell has joined its faculty of 17 instructors across the country. Captain Yell will specialize in teaching those seeking advanced licenses, above the 100 ton Master level. Educated at HMS Conway nautical college in the UK, Yell graduated with honors and received the annual prize for the proficiency in the management of boats. He followed a 24 year career path of Cadet through Master (14 years as Captain) in the merchant service specializing in refrigerated cargos on worldwide voyages.
