Metal Shark's Next-Generation Damen Fast Crew Supplier

As an extension of its existing relationship with Netherlands-based Damen Shipyards, Louisiana-based shipbuilder Metal Shark has announced the availability of the new Damen FCS 7011 for the U.S. market. Developed by Damen in response to feedback from leaders in the offshore oil and gas sector, the FCS 7011 has been designed to reduce logistical cost and increase efficiencies in an era of low oil prices. The all-aluminum monohull FCS 7011 is a fast and comfortable crew supply solution for offshore production facilities.

Amsterdam in ‘Premier League’ in Ethanol Market

Port of Amsterdam was included in the S&P Global Platts Top 250 Global Energy Company Rankings for ethanol in April 2016. In addition to giving Amsterdam’s ethanol market a tremendous boost, this has put the Port and Noord-Europees Wijnopslagbedrijf BV (NWB) on the map with several major players operating in this segment. However, Port of Amsterdam still trails somewhat behind Port of Rotterdam in this area, as the additional logistics expenses calculated for deliveries from Amsterdam work to the disadvantage of merchants storing their ethanol in Amsterdam.

Heavy Metal Free Antifoulant

Sherwin-Williams Protective and Marine Coatings Division announces new SeaGuard Heavy Metal Free Antifoulant, an environmentally responsible alternative to copper-based hull coatings that prevents the growth of marine organisms on commercial and military ships. The new product received U.S. EPA approval on June 30, 2008. SeaGuard Heavy Metal Free Antifoulant is a solvent-based ablative coating that utilizes a metal-free organic biocide agent and provides the same effective antifouling protection as traditional copper-based coatings.

Metal Shark Expansion Creates 200 Jobs

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal and Metal Shark Boats President Chris Allard announced the company will make a $1.52 million capital investment to expand its Jeanerette shipyard in support of military, law enforcement agency and commercial boat contracts. The expansion will create 88 new direct jobs, with an average salary of more than $62,000, plus benefits, and Louisiana Economic Development estimates the project will result in an additional 134 new indirect jobs, for a total of 222 new jobs.

Metal Shark Wins $54 Mln US Navy Contract

Louisiana-based shipbuilder Metal Shark said it has been awarded a contract worth up to $54 million from the U.S. Navy to build Near Coastal Patrol Vessels (NCPVs) for U.S. partner nations through the Department of Defense Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program. Metal Shark’s proposal was selected by Naval Sea Systems Command from a field of six competing shipyards. Under the terms of the award, Metal Shark will build up to thirteen 85-foot Defiant-class welded aluminum cutters for the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica, Guatemala and other U.S. partner nations.

Jet Edge Awarded U.S. Patent

Jet Edge, Inc. has announced  that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has issued the waterjet manufacturer a patent for a high pressure fluid sealing mechanism designed by Jet Edge R&D Engineer Michael Wheeler. Jet Edge’s proprietary high pressure fluid sealing mechanism (U.S. Patent 8,333,387) improves waterjet seal life by providing robust Metal-on-Metal sealing without the use of conventional plastic seals. This technology uses two convex curved surfaces in single line contact with one another to seal ultra-high pressure (UHP) fluid at static pressures up to 130,000 psi.

Fab Metal Shop Waterjet Cutting Services

Jet Edge, Inc., announced that Fab Metal Shop of Long Beach, Cal., is offering waterjet cutting services on a state-of-the-art Jet Edge High Rail Gantry waterjet cutting system. Fab Metal Shop can cut virtually any material with its Jet Edge waterjet machine, including metals, stone, resin, woods and plastics. The company’s Jet Edge High Rail Gantry waterjet system features a 6’X12’ work envelope. Fab Metal Shop equipped its waterjet system with a Jet Edge Permalign II abrasivejet cutting head. It powers the system with a 50HP, 60,000 psi Jet Edge iP60-50 waterjet intensifier pump. Fab Metal Shop specializes in the fabrication of steel, stainless steel, aluminum, marble, granite, plastic and many other materials.

Mercury Diesel Engines for 16 New USCG Boats

Mercury Marine has entered an agreement with Metal Shark Aluminum Boats to power 16 U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) boats with Mercury diesel engines. “Mercury Marine’s 2.0 diesel engines are ideal for smaller vessels such as the Coast Guard Cutter Boat ATON Medium,” said Greg Lambrecht, Metal Shark vice president. “The U.S. diesel market is evolving and adapting and our marine customers are taking notice of the diesel advantage when it comes to performance and fuel economy,” said Reinhard Burk, Mercury Marine Senior director of diesel & propulsion strategies.

Trafigura's Impala Terminals Scraps Chinese Joint Venture

Commodity trader Trafigura said its logistics and warehouse unit Impala Terminals has scrapped plans for a metals warehousing joint venture in China and will also exit its refined base metals business. Trafigura had announced a joint venture last October with Citics Global Trade, a subsidiary of Citic Securities Co Ltd , China's largest investment bank. "This (cancellation) is due to the necessary conditions not being in place," Trafigura said in a statement on Tuesday, giving no further details. The statement did not mention suspected metals financing fraud at China's Qingdao port, but last year Trafigura said a probe had affected some partners and hit confidence in the industry as a whole.

Metal Shark Makes Multiple Latin American, Caribbean Deliveries

Louisiana-based boatbuilder Metal Shark has announced several new contracts with Latin American and Caribbean operators, further expanding the company’s presence in the region. At a recent ceremony with Puerto Rico’s Governor Alejandro Garcia Padilla in San Juan, the Puerto Rico Police Department (PRPD) officially commissioned its first three Metal Shark 36-foot Fearless-class center console patrol boats. The welded-aluminum offshore center console vessels have been designed to operate at speed in the large ocean swells prevalent off the Puerto Rican coastline.

Repeat NYC Ferry Business for Metal Shark

Metal Shark Building Four 350-Passenger Vessels and an Additional 150-Passenger Vessel for NYC Ferry. Louisiana-based shipbuilder Metal Shark is once again building multiple high-speed aluminum catamaran passenger vessels for the NYC Ferry Service Operated by Hornblower. In early August, Metal Shark received orders from Hornblower for four 97’ x 28’, 350-passenger USCG Subchapter K vessels, which are a new and larger platform than the fleet of 150-passenger vessels NYC Ferry currently operates. An additional 85’, 150-passenger USCG Subchapter T vessel has also been ordered.

Metal Shark Delivers Port Security Fireboat

Louisiana-based shipbuilder Metal Shark announced it has delivered a 55-foot multipurpose port security vessel to the Plaquemines Port Harbor and Terminal District in Louisiana. Based on Metal Shark’s Defiant-class monohull pilothouse design, the welded aluminum vessel is designed to support port security efforts and firefighting missions at the port district, located 20 miles south of New Orleans at the mouth of the Mississippi River. For this application, Metal Shark equipped the vessel with twin Cat C-18 diesel engines mated to Hamilton water jets.

Metal Shark to Build DC, New Orleans Passenger Vessels

Louisiana-based shipbuilder Metal Shark said it has been awarded two separate contracts to produce passenger vessels for the Potomac Riverboat Company division of Entertainment Cruises, and for the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority. For the Potomac Riverboat Company, Metal Shark will produce four 88’, high speed/low wake, 149-passenger aluminum catamarans. The new passenger vessels will provide commuters in the Washington DC metro region with service between Old Town Alexandria, Virginia; National Harbor, Maryland; and Georgetown and The Wharf in Washington DC.

Metal Shark Puts First Two Citywide Ferries on the Water

Louisiana-based shipbuilder Metal Shark said it has put the first two passenger vessels for New York's new Citywide Ferry Service on the water, having splashed the new builds at its Franklin, La. shipyard late last week. At 7:30 a.m. on February 24, operators from Berard Transportation began the process of moving the first of two 86' x 26' catamaran-hulled aluminum passenger vessels from Metal Shark's final assembly building to the waiting cranes from H. Brown Crane Service, which hoisted the vessel and placed it into the adjacent Charenton Canal.

Metal Shark to Build Damen Designs

Vessel manufacturer Metal Shark has reached an agreement with Damen Shipyards to market Damen designs, which the company will construct at its Franklin, Louisiana shipyard. “We are proud to offer globally proven Damen designs as we expand our footprint in new markets,” said Metal Shark president Chris Allard. The Damen announcement caps off a busy year for Metal Shark, which announced the acquisition of its new Franklin shipyard in January. In April, Metal Shark hired marine industry veteran Carl Wegener, previously of Austal USA and Kvichak Marine, as its director of commercial sales.

Metal Shark to Construct 350, Yes 350, Hi-speed Navy Boats

Louisiana-based aluminum boat manufacturer Metal Shark Aluminum Boats LLC has been awarded a contract to produce up to 350 specialized vessels for the United States Navy. The fixed-price contract is for the construction of the Navy’s High Speed Maneuverable Surface Target (HSMST) vessels. Based on Metal Shark’s high performance 26-foot Relentless center console model, the twin engine, welded aluminum HSMSTs will be utilized by the Navy primarily for advanced weapons system testing and fleet training exercises.

Metal Shark Boats Gets Louisiana Governor's Award

Louisiana Economic Development (LED) inform that Gov. Bobby Jindal has presented Metal Shark Boats, (headquartered in Jeanerette in Iberia Parish) with the Governor’s Award for Entrepreneurial Excellence. The Governor’s Award for Entrepreneurial Excellence is periodically awarded by the governor to businesses that grow and provide more opportunity, more jobs and more commerce for the state of Louisiana. Metal Shark Boats has grown from an employment of 75 in 2012 to 200 employees today.

China Port Metal Scandal Hits CITIC Shares

CITIC Resources Holdings Ltd said on Tuesday that metal it owns at Qingdao port may be affected by a probe into suspected fraud, the latest firm caught up in a scandal that has raised broader worries about the risks of metal financing in China. The probe at the Chinese port, where a third-party firm is suspected of using single cargoes of metal multiple times to obtain financing, has also shaken markets amid fears the problems could extend to other ports and force a crackdown on using metal as collateral for finance. The investigation into the status of aluminium and copper products stored at the world's seventh-biggest port may hit the group, CITIC Resources said, sending its shares down by more than 8 percent to their lowest since May 7.

Louisiana-based boat manufacturer Metal Shark Aluminum Boats is significantly expanding its operations and has acquired a large waterfront parcel to accommodate the production of larger vessels. The builder has signaled its entry into the shipbuilding sector with the purchase of a 25-acre waterfront tract located in South Louisiana’s St. Mary Parish. Plans for the new facility call for over 60,000 square feet of manufacturing space, with approximately 100 new employees expected to be hired within the next few years.
