Moby Selects Kongsberg Maritime for Ro-Ro Propulsion Upgrade

Kongsberg Maritime has won a contract to upgrade the propulsion systems on five ro-ro passenger ferries for Italian operator Moby. The vessel upgrades will together reduce CO2 emissions by more than 30,000 tons per year.Moby operates a fleet of ro-ro passenger ferries, operating in the western Mediterranean, including routes between the Italian mainland, Sicily, and Sardinia.Three of the ships, the Moby Vinci, the Sharden, and the Moby Aki, will all receive a Promas Lite propulsion system, which combines rudder and propeller into one propulsion unit.

China’s Shipyards Operating at Full Capacity

The major shipyards in China are operating at full capacity, resulting in potential order backlogs, reports China Daily.The value of China's ship exports rose by over 21% year-on-year to $8.86 billion in the January-May period, according to China Association of the National Shipbuilding Industry data. Orders rose by 50% over that time, giving China a 67% world share.Orders have included container ships, bulk carriers, LNG carriers, vehicle carriers and offshore vessels. CMA CGM Completes Russia Exit

French-based shipping group CMA CGM has completed its withdrawal from the Russian market by divesting stakes in terminals through an asset swap, the company said.“With this finalized transaction and the decision to suspend all new bookings to and from Russia since March 1st, 2022, the CMA CGM Group will no longer be involved in any entities operating in Russia,” it said in an emailed statement.The deal was concluded on Dec. 28, it said.CMA CGM inherited 25% stakes in four terminals in Russia and Finland through the acquisition of Finnish firm Containerships in 2018…

Italy Seizes Charity Rescue Vessel

Italian authorities have seized a boat operated by a German NGO that last month rescued more than 200 people stranded at sea, because it did not comply with safety rules, the Coast Guard said on Thursday.In April, Italy banned migrant rescue ships from docking in its ports until July 31 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cruise Ship to House Staff from Coronavirus-hit Novatek Site

A cruise ship has arrived in Russia's northwesterly Murmansk region to accommodate healthy staff from a construction site run by the gas company Novatek, one of Russia's coronavirus hotspots, a local crisis centre said.Novatek, one of the world's top liquefied natural gas (LNG) companies, is building a facility to produce gravity-based platforms for its future LNG plants in Belokamenka near Murmansk, a region bordering Finland and Norway.Many of Russia's oil and gas facilities are located in remote areas where people live and work in close proximity for weeks on end, so that any contagious disease is hard to contain.Russia has nearly 166,000 confirmed coronavirus cases, more than France, of which 1,937 have been recorded in Belokamenka, according to the local crisis response centre.

DFDS, Moby in Ferry Swap Deal

Copenhagen headquartered ferry and logistics company DFDS has reached an agreement with the Italian ferry company Moby to acquire its the two combined freight and passenger ferries (RoPax).The Danish company decided to purchase the ships, the 2001-built Moby Wonder and the 2005-built Moby Aki, in order to expand capacity on the Amsterdam-Newcastle route.Moby will in turn acquire the two passenger ferries currently operating on Amsterdam-Newcastle — King Seaways and Princess Seaways, built in 1987 and 1986, respectively.“The new ferries are ideally suited for our Amsterdam-Newcastle route. Their modern onboard facilities and higher car-deck capacity will allow us to grow revenue by fulfilling the growing demand from high-yield car passengers.

FSG Delivers New Ro-Ro for SIEM

German shipbuilding company Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (FSG) has handed over another Ro-Ro ship to SIEM Shipping.The Flensburg-based designer and manufacturer of ships for commercial and naval applications worldwide said in a press release that this is the sixth RoRo ship that FSG has delivered to SIEM and is identical in construction to the sister ship “ALF POLLK”.The “MARIA GRAZIA ONORATO” will be chartered out to Moby Lines Europe and deployed in the Mediterranean area on the routes to and from Sardinia and Sicily.Together with its sister ship “ALF POLLAK”, this will be amongst the newest and most modern RoRo ferries in the Mediterranean area…

Cincinnati Teacher Completes Record trans-Atlantic Row

Cincinnati schoolteacher Bryce Carlson set a record for the fastest solo unsupported west-east row across the North Atlantic ocean on Saturday and also became the first U.S. citizen to complete the feat.The 37-year-old landed at the port of St Mary's in the Scilly Isles, off the coast of south-west England, some 38 days six hours and 49 minutes after he set off from St John's in Newfoundland.The previous record for the solo west-east crossing was 53 days eight hours and 26 minutes set by Canadian Laval St.

Geo Gradel Tug and Barge Enter Drydock

Great Lakes Shipyard said it was awarded a contract for drydocking and repairs by Geo Gradel & Co. for tug George Gradel  and barge Moby Dick. The contract for the 2,400 HP tug George Gradel includes steel repairs, keel cooler repairs, underwater hull inspections and repairs as well as painting and replacing fuel tanks. Work is planned to be completed by the end of June 2017. Worked completed for the 120' x 33' x 10.5' deck barge with 875-ton capacity included surveys, inspections and repairs for load line renewal. Work was completed on June 5, 2017.

Wärtsilä Repowers Italian Ferry

The Italian ferry company Moby S.p.A has chosen Wärtsilä to carry out the repowering of its passenger ferry MV Moby Zaza, the final vessel in a series of repowering projects that started with MV Moby Corse and continued with MV Moby Kiss. The scope of the agreement covers equipment as well as commissioning and systems integration. The Wärtsilä equipment provided include four new auxiliary generating sets with digital automatic voltage regulators, seawater systems with complete cooling circuit that allows operating in high sea water temperatures, exhaust gas system silencers and fuel systems. The new, state-of-the-art equipment will extend the lifecycle of the installation. As the existing 30-year-old equipment is replaced, the vessel's environmental footprint is considerably reduced.

Container Weighing at 29 APM Locations

The Hague, Netherlands - With just 50 days until SOLAS Verified Gross Mass (VGM) comes into force APM Terminals is taking the lead to ensure a smooth transition into the new regulatory environment facing over 120 million containers entering the international supply chain. Under international law from 1st July, 2016 shippers are required to provide a VGM for every container before it can be loaded with the shipping line. In 2014, the International Maritime organization (IMO), the agency of the United Nations responsible for regulating international seaborne trade, approved amendments to the Safety of Life at Sea Convention (SOLAS) which as of 1st July 2016 will require verification and documentation of loaded containers (Verified Gross Mass, or “VGM”) before they can be loaded onto vessels.

Global Ports Revenues Fall

Global Ports Investments PLC's  container traffic slumped 31 percent and revenue sank 28 percent in 2015. Global Ports Investments' revenues fell to USD405.7 million in the year to the end of December. Net loss of the port operator in 2015 amounted to $33.7 million versus $197.3 million net loss a year earlier, the financial report said the company’s financial and operating results for the year of 2015. Thus, the net loss decreased in 5.8 times. The leading operator of container terminals on the Russian market explains the decrease in revenue the drop in traffic (container throughput of Global Ports in 2015 decreased compared with the previous year by 31%, to 1.8 million TEU(equivalent 20-foot container)).

New Ferry Safety Initiative from RINA

Italy-based classification society RINA informs it has launched a ferry safety initiative. The Asset Integrity Management scheme for ro-pax ferries covers fire risk mitigation, single-failure risk assessment, enhanced planned maintenance and condition-based monitoring and also food and bacteriological risk management. Paolo Moretti, General Manager Marine, RINA Services, said, “With over 300 ferries in our class we are the world leaders in ro-pax ferry safety. That gives us two things. One is a lot of experience and feedback from vessels in service, the other is a sense of responsibility.

Italian cruise ferry operator Moby S.p.A. has chosen the RINA InfoSHIP software suite for managing maintenance and purchase processes across its entire 13-ship fleet. RINA InfoSHIP Maintenance and Purchase Module (MP), developed in cooperation with IB Software and Consulting, facilitates and reduces the costs of management of planned and unplanned maintenance, stocking and inventory. Marine Travelift Delivers to Kazakhstan

When the new Mangistau Oblast Boat Yard (MOBY) in Bautino, Kazakhstan ordered a Marine Travelift 600C mobile boat hoist for its marine repair operations, few were to appreciate the logistical challenges this particular placement would bring! However, Marine Travelift’s 50-years experience in dispatching its products globally came to the fore as preparations were made to send 24 open-topped containers to the final destination in Kazakhstan. With the 600C safely delivered one could be forgiven for thinking, job done!

MOBY Acquires Vessel DFDS

An agreement for the acquisition of a new unit has been defined today between Moby Spa and the Danish company DFDS, one of the leading European maritime operators. The ship, called “Prince of Scandinavia”, will be named Moby Drea and will operate on the Livorno-Olbia-Livorno itinerary. Moby Drea, that will join the 15 units of Moby fleet, will arrive in Italy mid December to undergo a complete technical and structural refit and will already start operating end of May 2004. With a speed of 24 knots, a capacity of 1.800 pax and 450 car places, it is equipped with 400 cabins, 300 seats, restaurant, self service, piano bar, cafeteria, pizzeria, pool, solarium and Happy Moby, an area equipped with maxi-screen, games and video-games specifically dedicated to children and teenagers.

Fincantieri Delivers Gas Carrier to Carbofin

The gas carrier Marola was delivered on November 9 at the Fincantieri Ancona yard to the commissioning shipping company Carbofin a Telesio group company. Present at the ceremony hosted by Roberto Tana Fincantieri vice-president were Mario Baldassarri deputy minister for the economy, ship owner Stefano Telesio and Ancona deputy mayor Gianni Giaccaglia. God mother was Robyn Enger. Marola which was launched last July is a highly flexible and technically reliable vessel for the transport of petroleum and chemicals in liquid form. It was designed to meet the most advanced international standards for safety and environmental protection and is fitted with four separate tanks in individual holds.

Welcome The Little Black Box

There is a groundswell of commitment for mandating the installation of "black boxes" aboard ships, so that in the in the unlikely case of a disaster, history will not repeat itself. At an estimated cost of $75,000 to $150,000 per ship, however, safety will not come cheaply. If it has not already, in a few years time the name Erika will conjure many of the same emotions and financial achings as the name Valdez. The tanker that broke up and sank off the coast of France just prior to Christmas 1999 has resulted in a veritable groundswell of political and industry activity which will likely result in fundamental changes to the way in which ships — particularly those carrying oil products or hazardous materials — are outfitted and operated.

Containerships Group Welcomes FESCO Statement

FINLAND-based door-to-door short-sea operator Containerships Group has welcomed a public statement by FESCO which clearly states that it is not involved in any attempts to purchase the Containerships Group or the Moby Dick terminal used by Containerships Group in St Petersburg. Sigurjon Markusson, managing director of Containerships Group says, "We welcome and fully accept the statement by FESCO that they have not been looking at buying our group, and that statements attributed to them in the Russian press were made up by journalists. We also welcome and accept their clarification that they are not involved in the harassment suffered by our terminal operators in St Petersburg."
