Management Change at German Dry Bulk Shipper

Monique Hezel-Reyntjens will retire effective December 31, 2023, having worked in and led what is now known as BeKa HGK GmbH for almost 42 years. Her parents, Franz Josef and Corrie Becker founded the dry shipping company in 1982. Monique Hezel-Reyntjenshas played a significant role in the success story at BeKa HGK; she worked in the chartering section from the outset and in the course of time became a shareholder and has been its managing director up to now. HGK Shipping Acquires BeKa HGK GmbH

Inland waterway shipping company HGK Shipping acquired the remaining 60% of BeKa HGK GmbH as of December 14, 2022, a strategic decision that the company says "significantly intensify its business activities on the Upper Rhine, Danube and Mosel rivers in its dry shipping division." The previous co-shareholder, Monique Hezel-Reyntjens, will continue to manage the business of BeKa HGK. With the takeover, BeKa HGK is assigned to the dry shipping corporate division within HGK Shipping.

Dive Boat Captain Charged in Fire that Killed 34

The captain of a dive boat that caught fire last year near Santa Cruz Island, resulting in 34 deaths, was indicted Tuesday by a federal grand jury on 34 counts of seaman’s manslaughter.Jerry Nehl Boylan, of Santa Barbara, was named in the indictment by a federal grand jury that alleges Boylan, as the captain and master of the Santa Barbara-based Conception, “was responsible for the safety and security of the vessel, its crew, and its passengers.”The indictment alleges that Boylan caused the deaths of 33 passengers and one crewmember “by his misconduct…

Chevron Readying IMO-Compliant Fuel

Chevron plans to bring an IMO-compliant 0.5% sulphur shipping fuel blend to the market by the end of the third quarter, a company representative said on Wednesday.Ships will be required to use fuels with a sulphur content of no more than 0.5% from the start of 2020, down from 3.5% currently, under International Maritime Organization (IMO) rules aimed at cutting air pollution."If the shipping company is willing to try it out now we can make it available, but not for continuous purchase," Chevron Fuels Technologist Monique Vermeire told Reuters at an industry conference."I think it will be avail

The Netherlands Maritime Technology association has been officially launched on the international stage during the Holland Day at SMM on September 9. Sjef van Dooremalen, Chairman of Netherlands Maritime Technology, unveiled the new name onboard the LCF Zr. Ms. Evertsen in Hamburg to an audience of 250 guests. A new promo video about the Dutch maritime technological sector was also shown. On a national level, the association, company and foundation for the maritime technological sector have been operating under this new joint name since May 8, 2014.

Inchcape Shipping Services Opens Mauritius Office

Inchcape Shipping Services (ISS) has expanded its operations into Mauritius, with the acquisition of Belship Co Ltd. Renamed ISS Belship, this opening marks ISS’ first venture in the country and is based in the capital, Port-Louis. Belship Co Ltd was founded in 1996 and ISS Belship will continue to offer established services including marine and offshore agency, logistics and freight forwarding, as well as introducing a wider portfolio of global service offerings. The ISS Belship team in Port Louis is headed by General Manager Arnaud Teycheney, who was a former shareholder of Belship and is loyally supported by his team of experienced staff. Princess Cruises to Base Ship Year-round in San Francisco

Princess Cruises has announced that for the first time it will base a ship in San Francisco year round, beginning in May 2013.The extensively renovated Grand Princess will first offer a series of Alaska cruises during the summer months from the "City by the Bay," followed by a schedule of Hawaiian Islands, Mexico and the California Coast sailings during the fall 2013 to spring 2014 season. Australian Family Uninjured In Pirate Attack

Pirates sprayed bullets into an Australian family yacht near the coast of Yemen and the holidaymakers were eventually rescued by a Saudi Arabian oil tanker, one of the victims said. Moya Tucker, resting with her husband and two children at a Yemeni army resort in Aden, said her family was shaken but none was hurt in the incident, which occurred on Nov. 12. Yemeni authorities launched an investigation into the incident and vowed to bring those responsible to justice. Tucker, who is from Crookwell, west of Sydney in New South Wales, said the family were sailing near the Aden coast when five pirates in a fishing boat stopped them, claiming they were policemen.
