Refit for Jack-up at Damen Verolme Rotterdam

Damen Verolme Rotterdam (DVR)  completed a refit project on the MPI Enterprise, a 120-metre, self-elevating, DP2, wind turbine installation vessel owned and operated by MPI Offshore, part of the Vroon Group. The works included the installation of spudcans on her four-legged jacking system, which can elevate the vessel at rate of one metre per minute in water depths up to 45 metres. MPI Enterprise Fitted with Spudcans

MPI Offshore’s wind turbine installation vessel (WTIV) MPI Enterprise has recently been upgraded with spudcans. The spudcans, which were installed during a drydocking in Rotterdam, increase the load-bearing area when the vessel is jacked up. This, in turn, minimizes penetration of the vessel’s legs into the seabed when working offshore. MPI Enterprise is the newest addition to the company’s WTIV fleet. Built in 2011, and acquired in January 2015, the vessel has brought an additional spread of services and flexibility to the existing array of vessels.

MPI Resolution's leg Extensions Completed

Following the announcement of 24 October 2016, MPI Offshore has stated that the leg extensions to MPI's wind-turbine installation vessel (WTIV), MPI Resolution, are now in place, class approved and fully operational. The upgrade work took place over an intense 60-days conversion programme working 24/7. A multi-skilled group of workers peaking at around 50 personnel, included specialists for welding high-grade steel and performing onsite machining operations, all positioned at the top of the existing legs. six legs. Access from quay level to the deck was provided by two temporary erected stair towers. These improvements to MPI Resolution will allow jacking operations to be carried out in up to 35m of water depths, including allowances for leg penetration and air gap.

MPI Resolution’s Leg Extensions Raises Capabilities

MPI’s wind-turbine installation vessel (WTIV), MPI Resolution, is currently undergoing installation of leg extensions at the company’s Tees Offshore Base in Middlesbrough, UK. Following these modifications, MPI Resolution will be able to operate in water depths of up to 35m, depending upon the site-specific data. This represents a gain of up to 7m on the previous jacking capabilities of the vessel and substantially increases the operability as a result. Modification works started in mid-September and the ten-week work schedule is being undertaken by local fabrication and engineering firm Wilton Engineering Services Ltd, with the vessel jacked alongside to deck height of 25m above the quay. MPI Resolution is the world’s first purpose-built WTIV.

Wind Power Seen Surging as Custom Barges Cut Cost

Offshore wind-power producers from Dong Energy A/S to RWE AG are building custom ships at record rates to reduce the cost of the technology which is  three times as pricey as electricity from coal plants. As many as 20 vessels, some with movable legs which reach the seafloor, will come onto the market in the next few years, reducing chartering costs of as much as 200,000 euros ($261,000) a day, said Marc Seidel, an offshore engineer at Suzlon Energy Ltd., which supplies turbines to Germany’s RWE. A lack of specialized installation ships has forced companies to hire barges designed for oil exploration, holding up work at projects such as EON AG’s Robin Rigg wind farm off Scotland’s western coast.
