China COSCO to be First through the Expanded Panama Canal

China COSCO Shipping has won the draw for its container vessel Andronikos to make the ceremonial first transit through the Expanded Panama Canal during the waterway’s inauguration on Sunday, June 26. The vessel, which has a maximum capacity of 9,400 TEUs, is 8.25 meters in beam and 299.98 meters in length. The draw took place this morning at the Panama Canal Administration Building, in which a Notary Public served as witness, among invited attendees. Also participating in the draw was the Norwegian/Swedish shipping line Wallenius Wilhemsen Lines (WWL) with its car carrier Thalatta.

Expanded Panama Canal Begins to Take Transit Reservations

The Panama Canal began accepting transit reservations for Neopanamax vessels for commercial transits through the Expanded Canal starting on June 27, 2016. In light of the upcoming Expansion inauguration date, the Panama Canal will offer four additional slots per day for Neopanamax vessels, in addition to the existing 25 slots of the current Canal. The first reservation was granted to a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tanker LINDEN PRIDE of Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK Line), represented by shipping agent Norton Lilly International (Panama), S.A. The vessel has a length of 754.59 ft.

ADM Joint Venture Acquires Brazilian Shipping Agency

Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM) and Norton Lilly International announced that their steamship agency joint venture, Agri Port Services LLC, has acquired Brazilian port and shipping agency Blue Ocean Agencia Maritima Ltda. ADM was previously a part owner in Blue Ocean. Blue Ocean services oceangoing vessels at ports throughout Brazil and maintains offices in the strategic ports of Santos and Paranagua. Bill Woods Appointed President of Rickmers-Linie America

Rickmers-Linie, Hamburg, Germany, has announced the appointment of Bill Woods to the role of President/CEO of Houston-based Rickmers-Linie America, effective November 1, 2002. Woods has more than 28 years of experience working in the transportation industry. His most recent positions were as Vice President Commercial for Great Western Steamship Company (GWS) and Senior Vice President of Great Western Transportation Consulting, a wholly owned subsidiary of GWS. His career spans executive positions with United States Lines, Höegh Lines, Norton-Lilly International, CMA-CGM and China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL) and includes overseas assignments in Japan, Panama and Russia.

John McMullen Dies at 87

John J. McMullen, maritime industry icon, former owner of the New Jersey Devils and the Houston Astros, died September 16 at the age of 87. McMullen founded John J. McMullen and Associates (JJMA) in 1957, a naval architectural and engineering firm that once occupied the 30th floor of One World Trade Center in Manhattan. At first the firm concentrated on ship containerization and bulk transportation, but it soon became noted for naval engineering and ship design. The company's current emphasis on defense contracts came later. JJMA is the lead naval architect of the winning design for the US Navy's DDX program.
