Port of Aberdeen: Offshore Renewable Charging Hub in the Works for Idle Vessels

Stillstrom, an offshore charging company recently launched by Maersk Supply Service, said Thursday it would collaborate with Port of Aberdeen on a project aimed at cutting emissions from vessels on standby outside the port.Stillstrom and Port of Aberdeen will conduct a joint feasibility study into an innovative offshore renewable charging hub. "The ocean clean-tech concept provides a platform for vessels to utilize electricity from either offshore wind or grid-energy, thereby eliminating the need for vessels to consume fossil fuels while idling.

Bureau Veritas Grants AiP for Innovative Ocean Clean-up Vessel

OVI: 103 Tons of Garbage Removed From North Pacific Gyre

Rising Tide of Innovation at Davos to Keep Plastic out of the Sea

Technology that could avoid the equivalent of 100 garbage bags of plastic waste being created per second received a funding boost at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Tuesday. The five winners of the "Circular Materials Challenge", which focuses on the 30 percent of plastic packaging that is too small or complex to be recycled and often ends up in the ocean, will share the $1 million prize to develop their solutions, said the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and innovation network NineSigma.

ABB Turbocharging, the leading provider for the manufacture and maintenance of turbochargers for 500 kW to 80+ MW diesel and gas engines, has signed a long-term Maintenance Management Agreement (MMA) with Dynagas Ltd. The service contract covers all Dynagas TFDE (tri-fuel diesel electric) vessels: Arctic Aurora, Yenisei River, Lena River, Clean Planet, Clean Ocean, Clean Horizon and Clean Vision. In order to ensure the reliability of operation of all the 42 turbochargers operating on Dynagas Ltd vessels, ABB Turbocharging is fully accountable for scheduling in advance turbochargers’ regular servicing for a period of 3 years, relieving the customer of both the technical and administrative workload.

Coastal and Ocean Clean-up Project Funding

NOAA has awarded more than $675,000 in grants to 13 projects aimed at aiding coastal communities in their fight against marine debris, the agency announced. This is the third year NOAA’s Marine Debris Program has awarded grants through its Marine Debris Prevention through Education and Outreach grant competition. “Education and outreach are important pillars of our program and we look forward to working with the recipients to help reach even more people,” said Nancy Wallace, the program’s director. The program’s education and outreach partners across the country have inspired thousands to become better ocean stewards, and have carried the message that prevention is the key to solving the marine debris problem.

Bio-Sea and Ocean Clean Organize Seminar

On August 2013, BIO-SEA, in cooperation with its German Partner Ocean Clean from the Kloska Group, organized a seminar on ballast water treatment systems, in Hamburg-Germany in which worldwide ship owners and engineering companies participated. The aim of the seminar was to raise awareness on the BIO-SEA BWT systems. It  allowed the share of information and experience among the participants. Bio-Sea said its partner Ocean Clean will be able to provide German ship owners with turnkey studies and implementation projects of BIO-SEA systems.

Lockport, La., Bollinger Gretna, L.L.C. of Harvey, La., a Bollinger shipyard, has delivered B. No. 284, a double hull 80,000 bbl oil tank barge built to meet the requirements of the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 (OPA’90) to Bouchard Ocean Services, Melville, N.Y. Barge B. No. 284 is a manned ocean, clean oil tank barge measuring 399-ft, 11-inches long, with a 74-ft beam and a depth of 28-ft, 6-inches. The barge is built to, and certified by, American Bureau of Shipping and United States Coast Guard to meet the requirements of OPA’90 with 12 cargo compartments and three separate pumping systems.

Bollinger, Bouchard Sign Deal for Three

Work in progress at one of Bollinger’s OPA’90 barge building facilities continues on schedule, as the backlog increases with the signing of two 60,000 and one 80,000 BBL offshore units for Bouchard. Bollinger Gretna, L.L.C., and Bollinger Marine Fabricators, L.L.C., two Bollinger Shipyards, Inc. facilities, have signed contracts for new construction of three OPA’90 compliant tank barges, consisting of one (1) 80,000, and two (2) 60,000 barrel (BBL) units for Bouchard Ocean Services, L.L.C., Melville, N.Y.

Bollinger Delivers Barge, Retrofit Tug

Lockport, La.-based Bollinger Shipyards Inc. announced it has completed the new construction of the second of two 80,000 barrel tank barges and the conversion of a tug for Melville, NY-based Bouchard Coastwise Management Corp. The tank barge is a 399-ft. manned ocean, clean oil barge built to meet the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 standards. The barge has 12 cargo compartments and three separate pumping stations. The 112-foot Ellen S. Bouchard tug was also retrofitted with an Intercon C coupler system, generator upgrades and regulatory re-certification. Bollinger is also working on a 35,000-barrel and 60,000-barrel tank barge for Bouchard. Bouchard is a total-service oil barging company with 28 barges ranging from 25,000 barrels to 252,000 barrel-capacities.

The 80,000 BBL tank barge, B. No. 282, is a manned ocean, clean oil barge measuring 399-ft.
