UK-based Specialist Marine Consultants (SMC) has been awarded a contract to provide Marine Coordination services to Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) at the Formosa 1 offshore wind farm, Taiwan’s first commercial offshore windfarm.The Formosa 1 project will comprise 20 6MW Siemens Gamesa WTGs and will become Taiwan’s first commercial offshore windfarm, with an eventual capacity of 120MW.This contract award further strengthens the relationship between SMC and SGRE, who have worked together on offshore wind projects across Europe since 2009. French oil and energy group Total said on Monday it had made a major gas discovery on the Glendronach prospect, located off the coast of the Shetland islands in the North Sea.Total said preliminary tests on the new gas discovery confirmed good reservoir quality, permeability and well production deliverability, with recoverable resources estimated at about one trillion cubic feet (1 tcf).It said Glendronach, located near its Edradour field, will be tied back to the existing infrastructure…

Subsea 7 said Friday it has been awarded a contract from Nexen as part of the Buzzard Phase 2 Project, located approximately 55 kilometers off the northeast coast of Scotland. Subsea 7 said the contract is “sizeable”, between $50 million and $150 million.Subsea 7’s contract scope includes project management, engineering, procurement, construction and installation of a 5-kilometer pipeline bundle along with associated well and platform tie-ins, and provision of a heavy lift vessel for transport and installation of a new topside module.Project management and detailed engineering has commenced at Subsea 7’s office in Aberdeen. The pipeline bundle will be fabricated at Subsea 7’s Wester site near Wick, with technical support from Subsea 7’s specialist pipeline group in Glasgow.

Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co. Ltd. (DSIC) has received Approval in Principle (AiP) certificates from classification society DNV GL for a new shuttle tanker and a column stabilized crane unit designs. The certificates were handed over at the Marintec China trade fair in Shanghai. Lu Xiao Hui, Vice President and Chief Technical Officer of DSIC, said, “DSIC and DNV GL have successfully collaborated on joint design development and classification for various ship types and offshore units since the 1980s. With these two latest AiPs, DSIC further enriches our product portfolio to the benefit of our clients. UK Electronic Solutions, (part of the NSSLGlobal group), said it has signed a contract with Dalby Offshore to install its motion and impact monitoring system, Oceanic Dynamics, on an additional three crew transfer vessels (CTVs). This follows a successful trial of the system on board Dalby Offshore’s largest CTV, the Dalby Ouse. Dalby Offshore’s 10-strong fleet primarily supports offshore wind farms, working with companies such as VBMS, SSE Dong Energy, Siemens and RWE Statoil, to move equipment and engineering crews as required. At 26 meters long, the Dalby Ouse catamaran is not only the largest CTV in Dalby’s fleet, it also has the largest engines and waterjets of any CTV in the U.K.

Subsea 7 S.A. informed today the details of the major(1) contract award that was first announced on 20 May 2016 . The contract was awarded by Beatrice Offshore Windfarm Limited (BOWL)(2), for the engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) of the Beatrice wind farm turbine foundations and array cables, offshore Scotland, UK. Located in the Outer Moray Firth, the Beatrice wind turbines will generate 588 Megawatts of power once the wind farm becomes fully operational in 2019. Subsea 7, in alliance with Seaway Heavy Lifting(3), will project manage, design, engineer, fabricate and install EPCI jacket foundations and array cables for 84 wind turbines, and perform the transportation and installation of the offshore transmission modules.

Offshore contractor Subsea 7 has been awarded a $150 million subsea, umbilical, riser and flowline (SURF) contract by Maersk Oil for the development of the Culzean field in the UK North Sea. The ultra-high pressure, high temperature field, one of the largest gas discoveries offshore UK, is located in Block 22/25 of the Central North Sea at a water depth of approximately 90 m. The contract scope includes project management, engineering, procurement, construction and installation of a 22-in. diameter, 52-km gas export pipeline connected to the Central Area Transmission System (CATS), and a 3.6-km pipe-in-pipe (10-in. outer pipe and 6-in. inner pipe) providing insulation for the transportation of the condensate to the in-field Floating, Storage and Offloading facility (FSO).

The North Sea needs continued investment from businesses and government through its current period of transition, according to a new report from Deloitte, the business advisory firm. Deloitte’s Petroleum Services Group’s latest North West Europe Review, which details drilling, licensing, and deal activity across the region for the whole of 2014, follows a year of change on the United Kingdom Continental Shelf (UKCS), along with volatility in commodity prices over the last five months. The report found that 40 wells were drilled offshore UK throughout the year. This is down on the 50 wells reported in 2013 but largely consistent with expectations given recent trends and market conditions.

Oil and gas operators may be sitting on new investment decisions until the future of the North Sea becomes clearer, according to the latest report from business advisory firm Deloitte. The report, which details drilling, licensing and deal activity across North West Europe over the third quarter of 2014 and was ompiled by Deloitte’s Petroleum Services Group (PSG), found that four deals were announced offshore UK. This is slightly down in the five transactions reported in Q2 2014 and substantially lower than the 14 registered during Q3 2013. Derek Henderson, senior partner in Deloitte’s Aberdeen office, said the drop in deals may be down to North Sea operators continuing to wait for further clarity about the future of the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS).

From a peak of 396 in 1996, numbers of wells drilled offshore UK fell to 164 in 2013, a low not seen since 1979. Development wells were down from 289 in 1998 to 120 in 2013. Exploration & appraisal drilling, on which offshore production ultimately depends, saw numbers fall from 224 in 1990 to 44 last year. Of these the key driver is of course exploration wells, down from 157 in 1990 to just 15 last year.

AF Group's wholly owned subsidiary, AF Decom Offshore UK Limited, has in a consortium with Heerema Marine Contractors Nederland SE (Heerema AF Consortium), entered into an agreement with CNR, Canadian Natural Resources International (UK) Limited for decommissioning of the Murchison platform in the UK North Sea. MoU includes a major contract for engineering, preparatory, removal and recycling (EPRD) of both tires and steel foundations, in all, a combined weight of more than 37,000 tons. The agreement requires the initiation of engineering work immediately after signing the contract, while the offshore works will start early in 2016 abandonment and dismantling work will continue until 2020.

Drilling and deal activity on the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) will remain at ‘a steady low’ for at least the next year, suggests a new report from business advisory firm Deloitte. Poor weather and high costs have already had an impact on the amount of exploration and appraisal (E&A) work conducted by operators in the region during the first quarter. The report, which details activity across North West Europe over the first three months of 2014 and was compiled by Deloitte’s Petroleum Services Group (PSG), found a total of 12 E&A wells were drilled on the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS). Although that represents an increase of five wells compared with Q4 2013, it is a decrease of one well on the same period last year.

The Harwich Dock Company (HDC) and Offshore Marine Management (OMM) have secured a significant long term contract with DONG Energy, one of the leading energy groups in Northern Europe, to provide cable storage and management services at the Harwich Navyard in Essex. The first project of this long-term agreement will see OMM providing cable engineering, commissioning, consultancy and general cables services at Harwich Navyard to support DONG Energy’s wind farm operations and maintenance works. HDC enlisted the expertise of OMM as cable industry specialists when the opportunity arose to provide a cable storage O&M hub for DONG Energy. HDC worked successfully with OMM in 2011, providing local facilities to OMM during the installation of array cables for the Greater Gabbard Offshore Wind Farm.

North Sea drilling activity eased during the third quarter of 2013 following an encouraging second quarter, according to the latest report into offshore activity from Deloitte, the business advisory firm.The report, compiled by Deloitte’s petroleum services group (PSG), found that although the number of new wells drilled on the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) fell by around one third in comparison to Q2, the outlook for the North Sea remained positive. A total of 11 exploration and appraisal wells were drilled in the UK during the third quarter of 2013 – five fewer than during Q2 and six fewer than the same period last year. Despite the fall in figures for the UKCS, the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS) has produced eight more wells during Q3 2013 than the same period last year.

Strategic Marine, a specialist shipbuilder in Asia, today announced that Njord Offshore, U.K. fleet operator of Crew Transfer Vessels for the growing European offshore windfarm sector, has officially confirmed the option for two more high performance crew transfer and service vessels, taking the total order to eight vessels. So far, Strategic has delivered six vessels to Njord Offshore. The first, Njord Advocet, completed her maiden charter on the Greater Gabbard Windfarm for SSE and will join her sister Vessels off the European Mainland off Germany. The Njord Kittiwake is now working off Denmark and the Njord Curlew and Lapwing off Germany. The Njord Puffin and Petrel were delivered last month at Strategic’s shipyard in Singapore and have just arrived in Europe.

Ulstein subsidiary, Ulstein Idea Equipment Solutions, complete delivery, installation & testing of two pile gripper frames (PGF) for the Offshore Wind Force JV. The PGF’s will be used by DONG Energy West of Duddon Sands (UK) Limited and Scottish Power Renewables (WODS) Limited for the installation of mono-pile foundations in the West of Duddon Sands Offshore Windfarm offshore UK. The customised pile gripper frames combine smart engineering with the latest in control technology, and are unique in that they are retractable and the lower weight of their design makes them more cost-effective.

Bibby Offshore U.K. Ltd signed a nonexclusive ship agency services contract with GAC covering all ports in the U.K. and making the Group their first choice of provider elsewhere worldwide. Aberdeen-based Bibby Offshore U.K. Ltd is a subsidiary of the Bibby Line Group, providing solutions to the oil and gas sector operating in the North Sea. The deal with GAC has been signed just as Bibby Offshore U.K. embarks on a five-year growth plan that will see the expansion of its fleet of offshore construction vessels and ROV systems.

Strategic Marine also delivers fourth of eight windfarm service supply ships for UK operator  in Singapore. Strategic Marine, a specialist shipbuilder with operations in Singapore, Australia and Vietnam, will build the Long Term Ashmore Capability (LTAC) for Gardline Australia Pty Ltd on behalf of the Government of Australia. The LTAC will be a 40-meter On Station Vessel designed for reliable, flexible self-sufficiency on longterm deployment in tropical areas. The agreement between the government and BP allows HM Coasguard to call on a BP-chartered vessel in the event of a pollution incident. An operational and commercial model has been brokered with the oil industry allowing HM Coastguard to call on a BP-chartered vessel, the Grampian Frontier, to provide support in the event of a pollution incident. The Emergency Response and Rescue Vessel (ERRV) operates west of Shetland and the owner North Star Shipping is working with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency to ensure that the crew and equipment are able to respond. The involvement of the Frontier builds on the UK Government’s commitment last year to fund an Emergency Towing Vessel in waters around Scotland for the duration of the current Spending Review.
