BMT Fleet Technology will commence work to enable the decommissioned submarine, HMCS Ojibwa to become the centrepiece at the new Elgin Military Museum of Naval History being built in Port Burwell, Ontario. Ojibwa has completed its route from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia to its temporary home in Hamilton, Ontario where it has been transferred to a shallow-draft barge and is currently being fitted with permanent cradles, designed by the BMT project team. Other engineering work such as the safe removal of any hazardous material will ensure the vessel’s integrity before it embarks upon its final journey to the museum in early September 2012. Saturday, September 8 should be a day to remember in Port Burwell, Ontario. That is the day the decommissioned submarine Ojibwa, Canada’s first Oberon Class submarine is set arrive at her new home to become the centerpiece of the Elgin Military Museum’s new naval museum. The decision to earmark September 8 as the day the sub will be brought ashore and placed on her new foundations was made at a meeting of the Ojibwa Project Team on January 30. The schedule of work that set the September date is one of the remaining pieces required to obtain the final release of Ojibwa to the Museum.

The Elgin Military Museum in St. Thomas, Ontario, announced its partnership with BMT Fleet Technology Ltd, a subsidiary of BMT Group Ltd, the leading international maritime design, engineering and risk management consultancy. As the assigned project manager, BMT Fleet Technology will be responsible for the evaluation, movement and mounting of the decommissioned submarine HMCS Ojibwa from its current location in Dartmouth Nova Scotia to its new home in Ontario. HMCS Ojibwa, an Oberon Class submarine will become a museum and learning centre. “This is an exciting opportunity for BMT Fleet Technology to support the preservation of Canada’s naval heritage.
