Lockheed Martin-Led Team Tests Naval Defense System

Lockheed Martin has completed at-sea demonstration operational testing of a new Fast Inshore Attack Craft (FIAC) Defense System, which is designed to provide an innovative and cost-effective way to quickly extend the defensive perimeter of most naval vessels out to five miles. Seeing Forever: Lockhead Martin's Gyrocam

Lockheed Martin recently completed successful demonstrations of its Gyrocam 15-inch Dual Sensor & 15-inch Triple Sensor to the Navy. The demonstration was conducted as part of a cooperative research and development effort with the Stiletto Maritime Demonstration Program. That program was established to help accelerate the delivery of innovative maritime technologies across all armed services. During the demonstration in Virginia Beach, Va., U.S. Navy Expeditionary Combat Command (NECC) sailors used the 15-inch gyro-stabilized optical sensors in both day and night exercises. After successfully tracking items of interest and acquiring on-the-move, high-resolution electro-optical and thermal video, end-users provided immediate feedback on the technology.

Kelvin Hughes is displaying its new combined camera and radar Single Mast Solution (SMS) at SMM 2014 in Hamburg from September 9-12. The company is also demonstrating the associated CxEye display software which provides intuitive command and control for the system. Responding to the market need for a rapidly deployable, all-weather, port and harbor security radar and multi-optioned electro-optical system, Kelvin Hughes has utilized its SharpEye X-band solid state surveillance radar technology to develop the Single Mast Solution.

Raytheon Awarded $23m for Navy Mine Hunting Sonar

The Naval Sea Systems Command has awarded Raytheon Company a $23.2m contract to provide AN/AQS-20A mine hunting sonar engineering services and support. This award exercises an option on an existing 2005 contract, bringing the total contract value to $139m. AN/AQS-20A, a key component of the Organic Mine Countermeasures family of systems, has been integrated into multiple airborne mine countermeasures helicopters. Most notably, it is the primary mine hunting system integrated into the U.S. Navy's MH-60S. It provides critical capabilities in support of mine-clearing operations in both deep ocean and littoral waters by enabling the detection, classification and localization of bottom, close-tethered and volume mines.

Turner Designs now offers a C6P Submersible Sensor package enabling up to six sensors in a corrosion resistant, highly durable, Delrin plastic housing able to withstand even the harshest of environments. Modeled after the popular C3, the C6P can be configured with 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 optical sensors ranging from deep UV to IR. An antifouling copper plate and a mechanical wiper are available as options to minimize bio-fouling on and around the sensors. Each C6P comes with a factory installed temperature sensor; factory-installed depth sensors are available.

Downtime Avoided with Arc Fault Protection

When power protection is evaluated the need to consider arc fault events is often neglected. However, the risk is at a high price when it takes so little to be safe. Most people tend to think that their switchboard will be sufficiently protected by e.g. overcurrent and a short-circuit relay. While this may be true for low voltage switchboard with small current, traditional circuit protection will not be sufficient for medium and high voltage switchboards, which harness larger amounts of energy. The same applies to transformer stations, wind turbines, and diesel electric propulsion systems.

L-3 Receives Award for U.S. Navy EOSSs

L-3 KEO announced  it has been awarded a multi-million dollar contract option from the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) for nine MK 20 Electro-Optical Sensor Systems (EOSSs). L-3 KEO will build and test the systems, as well as perform engineering services activities, over the course of the next two years in its Northampton, Mass. facility. This is the final contract option from a sole-source NAVSEA contract that was awarded to L-3 KEO in 2011 and raises the total number of MK 20 EOSSs ordered to 61. New System Reduces Risks in Ice Operations

An intelligent ice load monitoring system for the ships operating in ice covered waters will provide the operators a tool to handle the ships in safe but efficient ways. The state of the art system will monitor the hull loads with optical sensors installed on the steel structures of the vessel. With the information received from the sensors and combined with the ship’s structural capability, the system is able to show operators the loading and risk level imposed by ice impacts. The system will also be able to make a probability forecast of the expected loads. Thus, the new system will be able to provide vessel operators a substantially improved tool to operate the ships in safe but efficient ways.

Maritime safety products and systems can entail everything from a sophisticated integrated bridge system down to cleaning products for the galley. Here are a few recent introductions that appear particularly topical in the never-ending push for safer ships and crews. Under normal circumstances it would be hard to imagine a a mariner or rig worker who would want to be in the freefall lifeboat to the left, but in an emergency that blaze orange tube is likely the most beautiful ride at sea.

Raytheon Get US$35-Million Navy LCS Sonar Contract

Raytheon Company says it is to provide the U.S. Navy with AN/AQS-20A minehunting sonar systems and equipment. The system leverages advanced sonar technologies to support the Navy's critical minehunting missions, ensuring safe access and passage for military and civilian vessels on the world's oceans and waterways. Deployed from the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) as the variable depth sonar for the AN/WLD-1 Remote Minehunting System (RMS), the AN/AQS-20A system is towed undersea to scan the water in front, below and to the sides of the vehicle for anti-shipping mines.

Sensors Track Gulf of Mexico's Nitrate Pulse

A new U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) report describes how advanced optical sensor technology is being used in the Mississippi River basin to accurately track the nitrate pulse to the Gulf of Mexico. Excessive springtime nitrate runoff from agricultural land and other sources in the Mississippi drainage flows into the Mississippi River and downstream to the Gulf of Mexico. This excess nitrate contributes to the Gulf of Mexico hypoxic zone, an area with low oxygen known commonly as the "dead zone." The Cameroonian Navy (CN) has taken delivery of two new 24m ARESA 2400 CPV Defender and one new 23m ARESA 2300 LD Craft to patrol and secure it’s coast. Cameroon’s Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Jean Mendoua, commissioned the 23m Aresa 2300 landing craft and two 24m Aresa 2400 CPV Defender patrol boats at the Cameroon Navy Base in Douala on November 21. US Navy Ship Pulls out of MH370 Search

The U.S. Navy announced that its ship USS Kidd and MH-60R helicopters will detach from the MH370 search and rescue (SAR) effort as of March 18 after searching a combined 15,000 square miles of the Andaman Sea since March 10. The decision was made in consultation with Malaysia’s government, the U.S. Navy said in a news release. So far no debris or wreckage associated with the missing aircraft was found, the Navy said. A Coast Guard aircrew medevaced a man from a 64-foot sailboat 200 miles offshore New Orleans in the Gulf of Mexico, Thursday. MedPort Tangier Cranes to Reach APM Soon

The first group of three, of a total of 12 advanced remotecontrolled ship-to-shore (STS) cranes, has departed China for delivery on February 15 to the new APM Terminals MedPort Tangier, Morocco terminal. Schmidt Ocean Institute’s research vessel Falkor returns from the first ever expedition to systematically characterize the rarely explored Mariana Back-Arc. HAGANTA, GUAM – A diverse team of scientists are returning from a 28-day expedition onboard R/V Falkor that has more than doubled the number of known hydrothermal vent sites in the Mariana Back-arc region. This area, west of the Mariana Trench, is where plate spreading and submarine volcanism are concentrated. Several momentous findings were made, including the discovery of one of the deepest vents ever found.
