Pearson Yachts Completes Hull 100

First christened in September 2001, True North by Pearson Yachts completed hull number 100 on May 5th. Delivery is planned for July of this year, and marks a large milestone for Pearson. Originally designed as a dependable seaworthy craft with a functional layout, the 38 has stayed true to form. True North owners have had a part in the evolution of this boat, and while the majority of characteristics have remained the same since inception, new upgrades have become available every year. New this year, owners have the option of adding a flybridge or cockpit seating along the transom. Constructed by Pearson Composites, all True North hulls are built with SCRIMP resin infusion technology that results in products that are lighter and stronger than those made with conventional fiberglass.

Global Industries Announces New VP

Global Industries, Ltd. has appointed J. Michael Pearson to the position of senior vice president – strategic planning. In this position, he will have corporate oversight responsibility for project performance on a worldwide basis. Pearson has 30 years of engineering and construction management experience, including 25 years with McDermott International, Inc. where he progressed from field engineer to vice president/general manager of major domestic and international construction projects. Most recently, Pearson acted as president of the CAByL joint venture project constructing offshore platforms for Pemex’s Cantarell Field at Enron Engineering and Construction Company. Pearson holds a BS degree in Civil Engineering from Louisiana Tech University.

Integrated Composite Resins likely from Total's CCP & POLYNT

CCP Composites, a Total company specialized in composite resins, and Polynt Group, a provider of intermediate polymers and composites, are planning to combine to create an integrated composite resins producer that will rank number one in Europe and number three globally. Global Industries Announce an Executive Restructuring

Peter S. Atkinson, President of Global Industries, Ltd., will assume responsibilities for all administrative functions worldwide including accounting, human resources, information and communications, investor relations, legal, purchasing, risk, safety, and all other functions reporting to these groups. Atkinson joined the Company in September 1998 as Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. In June 2000, he was named President. Prior to joining Global, he served at the corporate level and in the North Sea, Middle East, West Africa, and Central and South America at J. Ray McDermott, S.A. and McDermott International, Inc. for over twenty-three years.

As SOLAS Deadline Nears, More Composite Use is Expected

Composites have been utilized in various applications in the shipbuilding industry in order to meet countless requirements of shipyards and ship owners. Composites have found their way into areas such as hull design for smaller vessels to modular bathroom units on larger vessels. Research and development with composites has also created Trevira fabric. Composites continue to evolve along with the shipbuilding industry, and one should expect to see more wide spread use of this material in years to come. In order to better understand composites one must review the creation of this modern material, and then one can examine the uses of this product. The general definition for composite material is the combination of two or more materials in order to create a completely new material.

Ashland Names Piiroinen to European Marine Manager

Olli Piiroinen has been named industry manager for the European marine market within Ashland Composite Polymers, a business group of Ashland Performance Materials, a division of Ashland Inc. Piiroinen will manage Ashland’s composite marine business for Europe. Previously he was Ashland’s technical service representative for composite marine products in Europe. “Olli’s technical expertise, coupled with his broad knowledge of the European marine manufacturing market, will enable Ashland to expand upon our successful efforts in this market space,” said Mike Wallenhorst, global marine marketing manager for Ashland Composite Polymers. Ashland Composite Polymers is a leader in supplying products, processes and technologies to the global marketplace for composites and gelcoats.

Two Named to TCC Joint Planning Commission

The South Carolina Research Authority (SCRA), manager of the Navy’s Composites Manufacturing Technology Program and The Composites Consortium (TCC) announced the election of two representatives to a Joint Planning Commission that serves as an oversight group of TCC. The new maritime/land representatives are Jim Bakersville, chair of General Dynamics and David Rice from Newport News Shipbuilding. The Joint Planning Commission will advise the Office of Naval Research with regard to specific composites projects and will advocate composites manufacturing technology development.

Ingalls Delivers 'Zumwalt' Core-Composite Deckhouse Module

Huntington Ingalls Industries Shipbuilding delivers the 900-ton deckhouse structure to house the ship's bridge, radars, antennas & intake/exhaust systems. The deckhouse is designed to provide a significantly smaller radar cross-section than any other ship in today's fleet. Ingalls is building the composite deckhouse and hangar for the DDG 1000 class at the company's Composite Center of Excellence in Gulfport. Made almost exclusively using cored composite construction processes, the deckhouse and hangar take full advantage of the properties of carbon fiber materials and balsa wood cores.

Palmer Johnson Introduces Sport Yacht Series

Palmer Johnson, luxury yacht builder, has a new president and is introducing a new line of sport yachts. Mike Kelsey, Jr. was elected president of the Sturgeon Bay, Wisc. yacht builder in June 2004. Kelsey's grandfather, Patrick Haggerty, founder of Texas Instruments, purchased the yard in 1961. Kelsey's father Mike Kelsey, Sr. immediately went to work for Haggerty and passed the knowledge of fine yacht building down to his son. While there have been tough financial times at Palmer Johnson during recent years, the younger Kelsey believes the company's new line of sport yachts is a winner. At last year's Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, Palmer Johnson introduced Cover Drive, a very sleek 120-ft. sport yacht.

Damen Boosts Composite Focus

Coming off a year which saw the Damen Group record its highest ever order intake over a 12-month period, a production value of roughly $2.25b and 160 newbuild deliveries, the shipbuilder looks to expand in the composite vessel market. For Damen, building with composite materials is nothing new. Already using composites for decades in some of its high speed craft, naval vessels and ferries, the Netherlands-based shipbuilder looks to take composites to the next level. ClassNK to Issue Guidance on Composite Propellers

Classification society ClassNK announced it will release the world’s first Guidelines on Composite Propellers (Part on Manufacturing/Product Inspection) on August 31. The strength and corrosion resistance of composite materials makes them widely used in fields such as aerospace, automobiles and wind power generation, and their scope of application has been further expanded due to their usefulness. The substitute composite material carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) weighs in at around just 1/5 of aluminum-bronze. Despite its ultra-lightweight composition, CFRP exhibits the same or more strength compared to the aluminum-bronze composite materials used in conventional propellers. Due to its light weight, CFRP propeller shafts can be manufactured with smaller diameters, reducing costs.

Conoco and Aker Kvaerner To Establish DeepWater Composites

Conoco and Aker Kvaerner, part of Kvaerner, the international oil services, engineering and construction, pulp and paper and shipbuilding group, announced the establishment of a new company, DeepWater Composites AS, that will manufacture and sell composite products for use in the deepwater exploration and field development segments of the oil and gas industry. Conoco and Aker Kvaerner will each hold 50-percent interest in Deepwater Composites AS. Conoco and Aker Kvaerner have co-operated under a technology alliance since 1995 to develop, test and qualify two carbon fiber composite products that provide a technological and economic breakthrough to facilitate the exploitation of oil reserves in deep water.

Boeing and Oracle Team USA (winner of the 34th America's Cup) are collaborating to recycle 7,000 pounds (about 3,175 kilograms) of carbon fiber of USA-71, a yacht built for the America's Cup campaign in 2003. The hull and mast of the racing yacht will be processed and repurposed, a first-of-its-kind effort for what will likely be the largest carbon structure ever recycled. FBM Babcock Marine Makes New Appointments

FBM Babcock Marine Ltd has appointed Nick Pearson as commercial manager and Craig Patrick has joined the company as sales manager for commercial vessels. Nick Pearson has joined FBM Babcock Marine from Three Quays Marine Services where he was business development manager. He is a Master Mariner who has spent his career in the marine industry, working with P&O, Stena Line, SWATH International and Samsung Heavy Industries. He brings with him a wide experience in the high-speed craft industry and will be responsible for FBM Babcock Marine's sales team and commercial operations. Craig Patrick has joined FBM Babcock Marine from Maritime Dynamics where he was their sales manager.

2H Offshore Joins TCP Design Guideline Initiative

2H Offshore has joined an oil and gas industry initiative to develop a new design guideline for thermoplastic composite pipes (TCP) to advance the understanding and use of composite materials in the offshore industry, the company announced. The DNV GL-led Joint Industry Project (JIP) began in October and will take a year to complete. 2H teams in London and Houston are actively involved in the JIP which will build on existing knowledge and guidelines to achieve an industry accepted standard.

New Composites Accreditations for Retlif Testing Laboratories

EMI/EMC and Environmental (ESS) compliance and testing services provider Retlif Testing Laboratories informs it has finalized the accreditation process for its new dedicated Composites Testing Laboratory. Located within the Composite Prototyping Center (CPC), in Plainview, N.Y., the new laboratory is now fully accredited to IS0-STD-17025, the international standard that represents the basis for accreditation from an accrediting body through formal recognition of demonstration of that competence.

Saint-Gobain Announces Renewable Energy Initiatives

An early glimpse into the 2013 Annual Energy Outlook from the U.S. Energy Information Administration reveals that increased generation from renewable energy is expected to account for 32% of the overall domestic growth in electricity generation from 2011 to 2040. With this insight and reports of global growth forecasts in renewable energy from both financial and market analysts in mind, Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics today announced its initiatives for composite bearings applications in renewable energy markets.

Careers in the U.S. $70 Billion Composites Industry

IYRS, a Rhode Island marine trades & technology school, to partner with Maine businesses to run 'Open House' prorgrams on careers & training opportunities in the composites industry. “Composites construction has a wide range of application in today’s industry—and many individuals may not realize that there are a wealth of career opportunities for those with the right level of interest, aptitude and skill,” said Clark Poston of IYRS. IYRS will partner with Maine businesses Front Street Shipyard and the Kenway Corporation to offer the open house programs on the composite materials method of building pioneered by boat builders that has a high strength-to-weight ratio. Composites construction is used today by many industries—including marine, transportation, wind energy, aerospace and others.

NASA Tools Could Cross Over to Shipbuilding

HyperSizer is a structural sizing and design optimization software tool that works in a feedback loop with finite element analysis (FEA) to automatically search for solutions that minimize weight and maximize manufacturability. Although it can also be used on metallic structures, HyperSizer is particularly applicable to complex composite materials, providing the capability to optimize the architecture of large structures—like space vehicles, aircraft, railcars, or even ships—ply-by-ply and element-by-element.

Seemann Composites Awarded Sub Contract

Seemann Composites Inc., Gulfport, Miss., is being awarded a $9,399,284 indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity, cost-plus-fixed-fee completion contract for engineering and fabrication services in support of the Composite Advanced Sail for Virginia-class submarines. Work will be performed in Gulfport, Miss., and is expected to be completed in April 2008. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. Europe to Build Ships of the Future

A new European research project seeks to revolutionize the shipbuilding sector by replacing steel with composite materials for the construction of more efficient large length ships. FIBRESHIP is an ambitious project that will allow for the construction of light commercial vessels, passenger and leisure transport and oceanographic vessels more than 50 meters in length using fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) composite materials. It is one of the largest innovation projects funded by the EU with a budget of €11 million, of which €9 million is funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 Programme.

US Navy: DDG 1000's Composite Deckhouse Milestone

Composite materials are used to make cars, planes and boats, and have been used to build minesweepers and small surface combatants. Now, the largest composite structure ever built—the DDG 1000 destroyer deckhouse—has been fabricated in Mississippi and is being shipped to Maine for assembly aboard the future USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000).
