Indonesia Questions China Over Burials at Sea

Indonesia has summoned China’s ambassador to clarify the deaths of four Indonesian crew from two Chinese-flagged vessels, Indonesia’s foreign ministry said, after rights groups alleged the crew were mistreated and exploited.The ministry issued a statement after a video was circulated on social media, appearing to show a burial at sea aboard a Chinese-flagged ship. Busan Builds Logistics Center in Rotterdam

South Korean port company Busan Port Authority (BPA) said that it signed a contract with Samsung SDS to operate a logistics center in Rotterdam.BPA will begin a construction of the logistics center in September this year and complete and operate it in around June 2021.Samsung SDS, a subsidiary of Samsung group has been providing information technology services,  will provide comprehensive logistics services for small and medium-sized companies conducting business between Europe and South-Korea for 10 years from the opening of the logistics center.The signing ceremony was attended by Hong Won-pyo, CEO of Samsung SDS, as well as Joanne Doornewaard, Dutch Ambassador in South-Korea and officials from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.

HMM to Take Control of Busan Terminal

The number one Korean national containers carrier Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) and Singapore-based terminal operator PSA International have secured complete ownership of the Hyundai Pusan New-Port Terminal (Pier 4) in the Port of Busan, South Korea.The container carrier sold off its majority ownership in PSA Hyundai Pusan New-Port Terminal Co in 2016 due to liquidity trouble.According to a report in Pulse, HMM will acquire 50 percent plus one share in PSA Hyundai Pusan New-Port Terminal through a private equity fund, tentatively named as Yuanta-HPNT that it set up with Korea Ocean Business, a state authority focused to support the maritime industry.HMM…

HHLA Transports Ship Propeller for Hyundai Supreme

Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) loaded the biggest ship propeller in the world onto a vessel. The “HHLA IV” floating crane brought the gigantic 110-tonne object to the port of Waltershof, where it was hoisted onto the “Hyundai Supreme” container ship.It was the most powerful ship propeller to have ever been lifted by the hook of a HHLA floating crane. Although HHLA regularly loads the specialised products of Mecklenburger Metallguss GmbH (MMG) onto ships in Hamburg, the latest propeller, with a weight of 110 tonnes and a diameter of 10.50 metres, surpassed anything that had ever been seen at the port before.MMG is a leading manufacturer of ship propellers.

Korea's Seaport Cargo Grows

The volume of cargo processed at South Korea's seaports reached a record high last year despite a global economic slump and the collapse of the country's leading shipper, Korea Herals quoted the government as saying. Cargo handled at seaports across the nation totaled 1.5 billion tons in 2016, up 2.7 percent from a year earlier, according to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries. Trade cargo totaled 1.23 billion tons, while domestic shipments came to 265 million tons. The increase came mainly from the 3.1-percent rise in non-container cargo to 1.06 billion tons. Busan Port May Hit by Shipping Alliance Reshuffle

The upcoming reorganization of global shipping alliances is likely to hit Korea’s largest port in Busan and  the harbor volume of Busan Port is expected to drop by 3.5 percent from next year, the Korea Herald reported quoting Korea Maritime Institute (KMI)’s report. KMI  announced on December 22 that as a result of the analysis of the port rotation adjustment plans formulated by the soon-to-be-established shipping alliances "Ocean" and "THE Alliance," the number of shipping services using the port of Busan is likely to decline by three compared to the current figures. Busan Port managed containers of more than 10 million twenty-foot equivalent units last year. Of those, the Asia-North America route accounted for 36.7 percent while the Asia-Europe shipping line made up 6.7 percent.

More Hanjin Ships Seized, Box Rates Surge & Shippers Fret

About 10 Hanjin vessels effectively seized at China ports; Court says plans to start rehabilitations proceedings soon. Hanjin Shipping Co Ltd vessels have been seized at Chinese ports in the wake of the South Korean firm's collapse, further roiling the industry as freight rates jump and manufacturers scramble for alternatives. Seeking to contain the fallout, a South Korean court said it would soon begin proceedings to rehabilitate the carrier - which would allow Hanjin to take legal action in other countries to keep its ships and other assets from being seized. Rival Hyundai Merchant Marine will also deploy at least 13 of its ships to two routes exclusively serviced by Hanjin, while the South Korean government also plans to reach out to overseas carriers for help.

HMM, FESCO and CMA CGM Launch Joint CRS Loop

Prior to the launch, HMM has been jointly operating two services ‘KRS (Korea Russia Service)’ and ‘KR2 (Korea Russia Service 2)’ with FESCO. HMM merged the two joint loops and broaden its service coverage to the South China and the Middle China, and changed the service name to CRS, which was also joined by a French carrier CMA CGM. The new weekly service turns in three weeks with three ships of 2,700-4,600 teus those were provided by each company. The service calls at Hong Kong, Chiwan, Xiamen, Ningbo, Shanghai, Busan, Vladivostok (Commercial Port), Vostochny, Busan, Hong Kong. While cooperating with FESCO and CMA CGM for CRS, HMM has also been joining hands with FESCO for ‘CRN (China Russia North Service),’ which connects China and Russia with two 1,700 teu container ships.

VIKING, Daemyung Marine Invest in Korea

Marine safety equipment manufacturer and servicing provider VIKING Life-Saving Equipment A/S is to establish a local presence in Korea through a joint venture agreement with leading Korean marine safety equipment and servicing company Daemyung Marine Co. Ltd. The new joint venture, VIKING Life-Saving Equipment Korea LLC, has VIKING as the majority shareholder. The venture aims to bring faster access for Korean-based and foreign-flag ship managers in the cargo, passenger and offshore segments to the full range of VIKING products and service concepts. China Shipping Ports Acquires 20% Stake at Busan Terminal

China Shipping Ports Development, the port unit of China Shipping Group, has agreed to acquire a 20% stake in the loss-making Korea Express Busan Container Terminal (KBCT) from parent CJ Korea Express (CJ Korex). KBCT manages the container terminal in the port of Busan Shinsundae. KBCT has five container shipping berths spanning 1,500 metres with draft of up to 16 metres. The berths are capable of handling boxships of up to 14,000 teu and moved 2.2m teu in 2014. Korex, which until now has control of KBCT, continue to be the main shareholder of the South Korean company terminal operator, while CSTD will become the second largest shareholder.

Hamburg Süd christened its new containership, Cap San Vincent, at a ceremony at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., Ltd. (DSME) shipyard in Okpo, South Korea, Wednesday. The final vessel in a series of three identical new builds, Cap San Vincent’s christening follows the launch of sister ships Cap San Juan and Cap San Lazaro earlier this year. Busan Port to Meet Thriving Cruise Demand

In response to Northeast Asia’s rapidly growing attractiveness as a cruise destination, South Korea’s port of Busan is bringing new facilities on-stream this year and has unveiled plans for further developments in the future. In September, the port will officially open a new cruise terminal to complement the current facility – Yeongdo Cruise Pier, opened in 2007 – to accommodate the trend for larger vessels. The new terminal is located in the redeveloped area of Busan Old Port and has excellent connections to central Busan and is directly connected to the bullet train station. This facility will take cruise ships up to 130,000t and has 360m of quay length with 12m of water depth. The new terminal facility is a six-story building with total area of 93,932 square meters.

Busan Port Unveils Expansion Plans

The Korean government announced plans to add a further 15 berths to its flagship Busan New Port in the south of the country to increase container capacity by 15.8 million TEU. The new facilities will be a mix of container terminals, feeder terminals and multipurpose terminals and work will begin in stages based on actual cargo demand and under the coordination of central government. Development began at Busan New Port in 1994, and today it operates 22 berths with an additional eight currently under construction. Total container throughput at Busan Port Authority (BPA) reached 18.68 million in 2014 with the New Port accounting for 64% or 11.93 million TEU.

Gazprom, Sovcomflot Expand LNG Transport Cooperation

Gazprom and Sovcomflot named the new state-of-the-art 170,000m³ liquefied natural gas carrier (LNGC) Pskov, after one of the oldest Russian cities. The ship will be chartered to Gazprom Global LNG (GGLNG) under a long-term contract. The LNGC Pskov is the second vessel in a series of high-specification, ice class Atlanticmax LNG carriers that have been specially designed in accordance with Gazprom’s requirements, and will support Gazprom’s global commercial operations in the gas markets. The first LNGC, Velikiy Novgorod, was delivered and entered service in January of this year. The naming ceremony took place at the STX shipyard, South Korea.

IMS Saves Money

Following a record number of ASD Tug deliveries in 2012, accomplished Ship Delivery and Crew Training specialists, International Maritime Services (IMS) have handed over two ROPAX Ferries and a Workboat in quick succession to their respective owners. Castrol Marine Extends Cyltech 80 AW Availability

Busan, Liverpool2 Ports to Enter Partnership

One of Asia’s largest port authorities has signed a landmark cooperation agreement with the company building a new container terminal at Liverpool in the heart of the U.K. Peel Ports Group and Busan Port Authority will now work together to hone technical, economical and commercial acumen and increase investment in infrastructure and environmental developments. Lim Ki-tack, president of Busan Port Authority, travelled to the U.K. to meet Mark Whitworth, CEO of Peel Ports Group, and sign the agreement November 14.

Grand Alliance Pacific North West Trade

Grand Alliance members Hapag-Lloyd, Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) and Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) announced on Feb. 18 that they will cooperate with ZIM in two strings in the trans-Pacific trade, with immediate effect. The scope includes North China and Japan, South China, South East Asia to Canada and US North West Coast (NWX and PNX services). The services will operate on a weekly basis with a round voyage time of 42 days (PNX) and 35 days (NWX) respectively. MSC Ships Train to Support U.S. Troops Ashore

Two Military Sealift Command ships conducted a training exercise off the coast of Yeosu, South Korea, Aug. 17-18, where they rehearsed the U.S. military's unique ability to deliver fuel to ground forces ashore from a tanker anchored up to eight miles from the coast. The cornerstone of this capability is offshore petroleum distribution system ship MV Vice Adm. K.R. Wheeler - the only ship of its kind. Wheeler works as an at-sea pumping station to transfer fuel ashore from commercial and military tankers. The tanker pumps fuel to Wheeler, which in turn pumps the fuel to shore.
