When the supertanker Young Yong sailed to the Chinese port of Qingdao in September last year, it had quality certificates for its cargo stating it was transporting Malaysian crude oil, according to the documents reviewed by Reuters.But satellite images and photos show the Chinese-owned ship had loaded the oil four months earlier in Venezuela, an OPEC nation in South America under U.S. oil sanctions.The Young Yong is one of three vessels identified by Reuters that were chartered by little-known companies to export Venezuelan oil and used false documents to conceal its origin, according to shipping documents and 11 sources with knowledge of the trade.Two of those tankers, including the Young Yong, were designated this month by U.S.

China's eastern port city Qingdao is experiencing the worst ever algae infestation in the region, with more than 1,700 square km of coastal area blanketed by harmful green seaweed, also known as "green tide." Qingdao has suffered from algae for 15 years. It normally appears from late spring and lasts for three to four months, damaging the local marine ecosystem as algae take oxygen from other organisms and churn out toxic odors while decaying. The Freeport of Riga in Latvia has announced that it has signed a cooperation agreement with the Port of Qingdao in China, one of the ten busiest ports in the world.According to a statement, the goal of the agreement is to facilitate trading, logistics and business partnerships between Latvia and China, boosting the exchange of information and expertise in the fields of port planning and development, port management and information technologies.“Last autumn, we transported cargo by rail directly from the City of Xi'an to the Port of Riga. After signing this agreement, we can hope for new cargo flows in future,” said the statement.The Port of Qingdao is one of the ten largest ports worldwide in terms of cargo turnover.

A vessel carrying U.S. soybeans has unloaded its cargo at the port of Qingdao in China on Friday, shipping data showed, amid a trade truce between China and the United States.The Star Laura, originally carrying 69,298 tonnes of soybeans loaded in Seattle, arrived at Qingdao outer anchorage in early November.The vessel's draft is now at 44 percent of its maximum depth, indicating it has emptied its load, data from Refinitive Eikon showed.The ship changed destination to South Korea in early November but came back to the port in eastern Shandong province in December…

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has announced that on September 18, the MOL-operated LNG carrier Papua safely rescued four yachtsmen off Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. Details of the rescue are as follows: In the afternoon of September 17, the Papua received a distress relay message from the Australian Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centres, while underway toward the Port of Qingdao in China from Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. The vessel immediately rushed to the scene and rescued four survivors at around 22:30 on the same day. Early in the morning of the 18th, the survivors were handed over to a rescue boat arranged by the Australian authorities off Port Moresby.

China launched world's largest bulk carrier 'Ore Tianjin' in the port city Qingdao, east China's Shandong Province, reported China Daily. The mammoth ore ship, built by the Wuhan subordinate of China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC), can carry 400,000 metric ton deadweight (DWT). It will go into service for ore transportation between China and Brazil upon delivery, which is expected in April 2018. At 362 meters long, 65 meters wide and 30.4 meters deep, and a deck equivalent to three soccer fields, it's 25 meters longer than the world's largest aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford. Considering the huge size of the ship, innovation has been made to ensure its safety, stability and its energy saving and environment-friendly properties.

Taking the proposed New H Share Issurance plan of QPI into consideration, the Subscription Shares will represent approximately 16.82% of the issued share capital of QPI, and COSCO Shipping Ports’ shareholding in QPI will increase to approximately 18.41% in total. A group of Chinese warships led by its sole aircraft carrier is testing weapons and equipment in exercises this week in the South China Sea that are going to plan, China's foreign ministry said Wednesday. Exercises by the ships, in particular the aircraft carrier Liaoning, since last month have unnerved China's neighbours, especially at a time of heightened strain with self-ruled Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its own, and given long-running territorial disputes in the South China Sea. China says the Soviet-built Liaoning and the other ships conduct routine exercises that comply with international law. The first shipment of a ‘core kit’ for Russia’s Yamal LNG project has set sail for northern Russia from the Chinese port of Qingdao. China's first batch of two air cooled condensing modules of LNG project are the biggest and heaviest kits being used for the project. They are set to arrive at the construction site in late June, says China Central Television. Yamal is a liquefied natural gas project located deep in the Russian Arctic. It is expected to start operating next year. 85 percent of the liquefied natural gas will be transported to the Asia Pacific market. It is China's first export of LNG core modules, indicating that China has entered into the international high-end oil and gas equipment market.

Swiss headquartered Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has announced two new services alled the ‘Lone Star Express’ which will operate between Asia and the US Gulf. This new service will become a new Gateway to/from the US Gulf in anticipation of increased demand. At the same time, MSC’s Everglades service will be renamed ‘Amberjack’ and restructured to include a call to New York, this change ensures both services will operate at optimum efficiency. All changes will be in effect from the first week of May 2016 (departing Asia). The Lone Star Express and Amberjack will continue to be supported by the America and Empire services currently in operation. MSC now provides four weekly services between Asia and the East Coast of the United States.

Leaders from Qingdao Port Group met with APM Terminals executives in The Hague to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the APM Terminals Vado, Italy port project. Terms and investment amount were not disclosed. The MOU will create a new joint venture to invest in and work with other potential partners. APM Terminals Vado is a new terminal in northern Italy, which when opened in January 2018 will handle both containerized and liquid bulk cargoes – and integrated operationally with the existing 275,000 annual TEU capacity Vado Reefer Terminal facility, which was acquired by APM Terminals in August 2015. The Italian government is providing EUR 300 million for civil works for the project.

The APM Terminals Global Terminal Network will enter China’s fastgrowing grain import market as part of a joint venture with Qingdao Port International, continuing APM Terminals’ ongoing expansion into port and terminal operations outside containerised cargo handling. The newly developed Qingdao Port Dongjiakou Multi-Purpose Terminal, in which APM Terminals will hold a 20% share, is located on China’s Bohai Rim in the Shandong province, on the Yellow Sea. The Port of Qingdao is one of the world’s busiest ports,ranking seventh globally handling a total of 468 million metric tons in 2014. Qingdao’s new Dongjiakou Port area is set to become a national hub of Chinese bulk and energy cargos, with a projected volume of more than 300 million metric tons handled annually in this new complex.

China has amended rules around ships it will allow to berth at mainland ports, paving the way for Brazilian miner Vale to ship iron ore in its giant 400,000 deadweight tons (DWT) carriers. Vale's mega ships, the world's biggest bulk ore carriers, have been barred from China since January 2012 due to rules which disallowed ships of more than 250,000 dwt in capacity. An internal circular issued last week by the Ministry of Transport and seen by Reuters on Wednesday said it would now recognise ships with capacity of 400,000 dwt. It suggests that ports able to accommodate such large ships can now apply for permission to receive them, analysts said.

China has managed to export a large shipment of crude oil from Yemen over the weekend, ship-tracking data showed on Monday, despite mounting chaos in the country after the launch of Saudi-led air strikes last week. The 2 million barrel Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC), Tai Hung San, left the Yemeni port of Ash Shihr on Sunday, and has been chartered by PetroChina's shipping-arm Glasford, the data showed. The supertanker was sailing towards the Chinese port of Qingdao on Monday after exiting the Gulf of Aden. The shipment shows that some oil is still being exported from the country, which has become a growing supplier to China despite years of falling output and political instability.

Evergreen Line announced it will partner with COSCO and China Shipping in launching a joint China-Surabaya Express (CSX) Service. Evergreen said this comes in view of the increasing market demand resulting from significant trade growth between China and the ASEAN countries, and is the latest initiative to enhance its service on the Intra-Asian trade. The CSX service will employ four ships of 2,000-2,700 TEU, including one each provided by Evergreen and CSCL and the remaining two by COSCO. The first sailing is planned to depart from Qingdao on May 20th, with the following the port rotation: Qingdao-Shanghai-Xiamen-Shekou-Pasir Gudang (Malysia)-Singapore-Surabaya (Indonesia)-Singapore-Qingdao.

The largest container shipper in Taiwan Evergreen Marine Corp will work with China's COSCO Group and China Shipping Container Lines Co to launch shipping services between China and Indonesia later this month. The three partners will assign four 2,000-2,700 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) vessels to serve the new route. TEUs are used to measure the capacity of container vessels. The first sailing is planned to depart from Qingdao on the 20th of May, with the following the port rotation: Qingdao-Shanghai-Xiamen-Shekou-Pasir Gudang (Malysia)-Singapore-Surabaya (Indonesia)-Singapore-Qingdao. The four vessels will take turns serving the route. Each journey will take 28 days.

In response to market demand, members of the G6 Alliance today announced Asia–Europe service enhancements to improve product transit times and coverage. The Loop 7 service will be extended to serve the Baltic market with the addition of a direct port call to Gdansk. The Loop 4 service will be adjusted to serve the Port Said westbound call. The G6 Alliance offers a variety of services between Asia and Europe, Asia and North America as well as on the Transatlantic covering all major port pairs with weekly sailings. The G6 Alliance members are: APL, Hapag-Lloyd, Hyundai Merchant Marine, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Nippon Yusen Kaisha and Orient Overseas Container Line.

Mega-ore carrier  Valemax  Yuan Zhuo Hai, which is owned by China Ore Shipping,  has arrived Dongjiakou Port in Qingdao for unloading iron ore. This is the first entry of such a bulk carrier tonnage in the sea port of China for the past two years. Yuan Zhuo Hai is one of four 400,000dwt VLOCs acquired by China Ore Shipping from Brazilian ore giant Vale. The 400,000 dwt Valemax is expected to be part-laden, having called at Vale's Subic Bay iron ore transhipment terminal in Philippines after loading its initial cargo at the miner's Brazilian Itaqui port, according to Platts vessel tracking tool, cFlow. The world’s largest container ship CSCL Globe arrives  on her first visit to Europe at the Port of Felixstowe today - with hundreds of people expected at viewing points to witness the occasion. The world’s largest container ship arrives on her first visit to Europe  to make her only UK call at the Port of Felixstowe. The Hong Kong-registered CSCL Globe is truly huge – a behemoth of the waves, a new class of vessel able to carry a staggering 19,000 standard-sized shipping containers, even more than the Maersk Triple-E fleet. The previous largest ship to have docked at the port was the Maersk Triple-E, which arrived in November, carrying about 18,000 containers. The CSCL Globe made its maiden voyage from the Port of Qingdao, China in December.
